As she bid farewell to her teacher and her classmates (in her mind), Amy started her journey in the direction of the City of Wings. It was a smooth walk in the evening breeze.
On her way, she looked up to the sky to notice a peculiar bird flying above her because of its uniqueness: it had four wings and a twin tail. A leg was hanging down as if it were injured, and what seemed to be a drop of blood dripped down from its leg and fell right in front of her. Amy thought, "What a poor beast!", as it flew away.
Knowing she could not have done anything for the injured bird, she continued on her journey towards the city. She felt useless. Little did she know that, in the near future, that bird would become her greatest companion.
The city was filled with creatures of different races, mostly humans. Since the City of Wings is where the Intelligence Department built its stronghold, it was common for adventurers and merchants to come into the city, bringing items such as newly discovered relics, gemstones, and other weird stuff that needed to be identified.
Amy walked up towards a huge building and, in a loud voice, said, "Intelligence Department, here I come!" She showed the letter of recommendation to the guards and was guided inside. Since she was in another world, she had too few options to choose from, so Amy had no choice but to follow the princess' so-called request.
As she started looking around the place filled with items that gave her the vibe that they were of utmost importance as if a national treasure were placed in front of her, the sound of a high heel walking towards her caught her attention.
She turned around and saw a beautiful and tall lady in a high ponytail who seemed to be in her 30s, wearing an apron and specks that were just the right shape and size to make her already sexy face look sexier. Her assets, which uniquely made her apron curve at the front and back, would make all teenage boys run into the washroom after seeing her. Amy blushed.
She felt envious for the first time in her life.
The lady smiled and said, "Hello, young lady, welcome to the Artifact Research Branch of the Intelligence Department."
" My name is Sarah, and I am the head of this branch. You will be working with me here, as the letter from the princess suggested. You look kind of cute, so I will let you rest for the day, hehe. Kyla here will explain to you everything you need to know. I will be looking forward to tomorrow."
Nervous Amy responded quickly with a bow, "Nice to meet you, ma'am, and thank you for having me!" Sarah gave a smile and went on to her work.
It was already nighttime, and while Amy was eating her dinner consisting of steak and asparagus with bread and milk, she recalled what she had learned from Kyla.
1. The artefact research branch is the smallest in the intelligence department.
2. The only members are Sarah, Kyla, and the recruit, Amy herself.
3. Kyla does all the work here, starting from cooking, washing, cleaning, and all other household chores to helping Ma'am Sarah with her work. She is the ultimate wife material. Period.
4. The branch used to be the biggest branch during the times of the heroes, as they mainly depended on artifacts for their adventures, but since all have died, the artifacts aren't in much demand.
5. Sarah and Kyla are the only members who survived the hunt for the last demon race. They did not join the battle.
6. The branch provides food and shelter to its members so that they don't have to go in and out of the building and waste precious time that could be used in researching and unlocking artifacts.
7. Amy got a room of her own, and the food here seems to be of her preference, so she considers herself lucky. She won't have to risk her life in battle, but she can still be of help to others by working here in this safe environment.
Morning came. As Amy wakes up from the scent of lavender growing by the window, she stretches her body and says, "What a fresh start!"
She dresses up and rushes to the lab, greeting the branch head and Kyla, who hands out a bread and egg sandwich.
"Good morning, beautiful, hope you had a good sleep. I'll now explain to you some stuff related to artefacts." Sarah said.
"What are artifacts?"
They are historical antiques into which strong energies were imbued. They are also formed from certain events. They are either long-lasting, meaning they can be used multiple times, or they have one-time usage.
Artifacts are of 5 different types based on how they were made:
Divine: made by God's power
Dragonblood is made by dragons.
Demonic: related to demons and devils
Cursed: made from the evil energies born out of ill intentions and malice.
Blessing: Made from nature's energy Blessing artefacts produce the purest forms of energy.
Artefact Ranks: They are classified depending on how strong they are compared to each other. Starting from the highest rank Tier I > Tier II>Tier III> Tier IV> Tier V
One can determine an artefact's rank by using the artefact measuring instrument or by looking at the intensity of the aura it produces at the time of its activation, the higher the intensity, the higher its rank.
Apparently, the highest-ranked artefacts, or Tier I artefacts, have vanished from this world due to unknown reasons.
"As you can see, the artefacts that are kept in glass boxes around here are all for show. They are fake, high-ranking artefacts made by humans illegally and captured. Since your skill allows you to know about artefacts in detail, try and have a look at these artefacts lying around."
Amy knew what she was sent here for—to be used—but she still replied excitedly.
"Yes, ma'am."
Amy was excited to learn about these items called "artefacts" and wanted to know more about them. She looked at a glass box containing three strange rings and shouted, "Appraisal!"
