Nico said, his voice sincere as he placed the folder on the table. His mind was already racing with thoughts of the next steps, fuelled by the urgency and gravity of the situation.
"You're welcome,"
Mona replied, taking a sip of her coffee as she studied Nico's reaction.
"So, what's next?"
Nico could tell that Mona's question was loaded with more than just curiosity. If all he wanted were the details, his involvement would likely end here. But he knew that wasn't enough, there was much more to be done.
"Well, now I want to go there and bring some disaster relief to the people so the basic life structure returns as soon as possible,"
He explained, already brainstorming ideas for how to execute this plan.
Mona nodded in agreement.
"Hmm... that sounds good,"
She said, her tone approving but cautious.
Nico, knowing that his ambitions were grander than just offering immediate relief, asked.
"By the way, do you guys have anyone who is experienced in this kind of work and can help me with it? I want to hire as many people as possible."
Mona was slightly taken aback by this request.
"You want to hire people to do rescue operations?"
She asked, her eyebrows raising in mild surprise. Typically, such efforts were driven by volunteers rather than paid workers.
"Yeah,"
Nico confirmed.
"We need people to deliver food, set up temporary shelters, and treat injuries. I want this done efficiently and quickly, so I'll need to hire a large group. Is there any problem with that?"
Mona hesitated, not because she doubted his intentions, but because of the logistics and cost implications.
"Oh... No, that's good, but... It may cost you a lot to hire that many people. Most of this work is usually done by volunteers, so it's a lot less expensive."
Nico, however, was undeterred.
"Hmm... It doesn't matter. I just don't want the process to be delayed. I'll pay them all, even if they're willing to volunteer, but I don't want any slacking. Isn't it possible?"
Seeing his resolve, Mona nodded.
"In that case, it's easy then. I know some people who can do the best job for you,"
She assured him, already mentally compiling a list of potential candidates.
Relieved, Nico smiled and leaned back in his chair.
"Thanks for the help. Since you're also a social worker and politician, feel free to ask for any financial help in the future. I'll try to assist as much as I can. And Cecilia, if there are any other projects that could be useful, look them up for me. It doesn't matter how much it costs."
Mona and Cecilia were both slightly taken aback by his casual mention of financial aid, but they quickly recovered, realizing that Nico's resources were indeed substantial. Mona immediately made a few phone calls, summoning key people to the restaurant on short notice. Meanwhile, Cecilia offered to mobilize some of her staff to assist with the disaster relief effort.
As the three of them waited, they ordered some food and continued discussing various aspects of the upcoming operation. Over the next two hours, as more people arrived, the conversation grew more intense and focused. Responsibilities were assigned, and those who attended were temporarily put in charge of different aspects of the relief project.
The magnitude of what needed to be done was daunting, but Nico felt a strange sense of calm amidst the flurry of activity. They would need to procure and transport a vast array of supplies, food, medicine, building materials, and arrange for transportation by trucks and helicopters to ensure that everything reached the remote village as quickly as possible. They also needed to assemble teams of doctors and medical staff to treat the injured and prevent further casualties.
Once the plans were set in motion, Nico found himself with little to do but wait. With his part in the immediate planning complete, he decided to return home to inform his family about the trip. Though they were initially against him travelling to a disaster zone alone, his reassurances, and a bit of persuasion, eventually won them over.
Later that evening, Nico packed his essentials and prepared to leave. He opted for his motorcycle over a four-wheeler, figuring it would be more adaptable to the unpredictable conditions he might encounter on the road to the disaster site. As he revved up his bike and drove away from home, Nico felt a mix of determination and anticipation. The road ahead was fraught with uncertainty, but he knew he was committed to seeing this mission through, no matter what it took.
