The next day, I met Killian again and we had lunch together. Maria joined us and she too seemed to be enchanted by the young man. He even went ahead and invited us to a party that was taking place at the college apartment building he lived at. He informed us that it was a small house party. Even before I could turn his offer down because I did not feel like going, Maria had accepted.
“What time will it be?” she asked Killian.
“Six thirty,” he told us and proceeded to write the address down on a notepad. “Do you need me to pick you up?”
“No, we’ll get a taxi,” Maria told him and he stood up to go. “Thanks for the invitation.”
“Why did you do that?”
“What?”
“Accept it. I don’t feel like attending a party right now.”
“I know, and that’s exactly why you need to. I know you’re sad about Henry but you need some happiness in your life, especially after what that woman did to you yesterday.”
