I stare at him in disbelief, unable to believe what he just said. Did he actually mean it? There is no way. It's just another one of his acts where he says something mean to get me off his back. Yes, that's all it must be. It got to be. I let out a gasp as he actually aligns the blade with his leg just an inch above his wound.
"No! Stop!!", I shout as I hold onto his hand and pull it away.
"Let go!!". he shouts back at me, his shirt now sticking to his sweat covered body. He tries to yank his hand free from mine and under normal circumstances, he would have succeeded but perhaps he had lost too much blood and energy that he couldn't get rid of my grip. "I said let go!!", Alex growls at me.
"No! I can't let you do that! I won't let you!!", I shout again as tears stream down my cheeks and I pry the knife out of his fingers, throwing it away on the ground.
His eyes widen as he sees the blade thrown away and in an instant, his hand gripped my throat, chocking me. He yanked me closer to him as he growled loud. His eyes had golden rings around the orbs as he brings my face close to his. "You Bit--", he stops himself as he stares into my teary red eyes before lowering his head down, cursing under his breath. His hand roughly lets go off me and falls by his side. His entire body trembled like a leaf in a storm. The male panted heavily and the sight itself was enough to scare me.
"Alex..?", I call out to him in a low voice, my hands clutching my own shirt in fear. I carefully reach out and hold his shoulders before shaking him a little. He doesn't reply and ends up falling to his side but I quickly catch him in my arms. My fingers had turned cold in fear. "Alex!", I shout as I cup his face and lift it to make him look at me again. His eyes were barely open and sweat rolled down in beads. I shake my head, "I have my help kit here!"
He weakly scoffs, "..it won't help... even my own cream failed..." I watch him in horrors as he lightly sways in and out of consciousness. I rub his face, hoping that our bond can help him heal. The male quietly leans into my touch and I hug him closer with my chin on his head, tears stinging in my eyes. "..i don't understand...", he lightly coughs, "..what kind of...toxic he had...in his gums..."
My eyes widen at his words and it all hits me. I look down at him, "What was that thing you applied on your wounds??"
Was it... Could that be the reason he's suffering?
"..wolfsbane..", he murmurs the answer, "...to remove the...wolf toxins..." I gasp loud before quickly helping him sit back with the pillows. With panic making me lose my balance, I still manage to rush to the bathroom and return with a wet cloth. I rush over and he watches me with half closed eyes.
I look at him with an apologetic gaze, "This is going to hurt..." I say before starting to wiping his wound clean. He hisses in pain and his head is thrown back. The rogue clutches the bed-sheet. I wince and my hand almost trembles as I try to wipe away as much of the wolfsbane off his tender flesh as possible. Once done, I quickly move to my closet to look for the little wooden box Nadia had given me.
As I return, I open the tiny lid and scoop up the green cream. I was about to apply it when Alex grabs my arm in a vice-like grip and yanks it back, "What do you think you're doing?!"
"I'm just trying to help... Trust me", I try pulling my hand free but he doesn't let go.
He instead, weakly chuckles, "Trust you... Trust a female who stayed with a warrior to keep herself safe from my kind!" His voice was harsh and showed the amount of pain he felt but tried to hide.
I clench my jaw at his sharp tone before yanking my hand free. "You don't have to trust me then! You can even go continue hating me! But the truth is you're my mate! And it may mean nothing to you but I prayed for years to be able to find you! So believe it or not, I want to save you!!", I speak through the tears that flowed free down my cheeks. The male just quietly watches me with an unreadable expression. I don't waste time trying to decipher it as I go back to applying the cream on his wound. He hisses again in pain and I watch his toes curl. The male closes his eyes shut as he growls loud but I ignore him and finish my work.
Once done, I close the box back and stand up quietly, taking it back to my closet. I discard the wet cloth and bring a few more. Taking my seat on the bed beside him, I wipe the blood off his leg again. Then I move up to wipe the sweat off his face. He just quietly continues to watch me while still panting and his jaws clenched in pain. I don't meet his gaze as I continue to help him out like an emotionless machine. I notice his shirt that was drenched in his sweat and lower my eyes, "Do you want another shirt?"
He only hums in reply and I quietly go fetch it for him. I try handing it to him but he doesn't take it. "Help me change...", he speaks in a bit softer tone than before. I still keep my eyes off his face as I pull his shirt over his head and then get the other one on him. I throw the old one on the floor, making a mental note to clean it later. We stay quiet on the bed with the only sound being of the clock on the wall that showed 3:48 am and his ragged breathing mixed with occasional hisses.
"What did you put?", he weakly asks after a while.
"A mixture of herbs made by my friend for me. It negates the effect of wolfsbane...", I answer, glancing at his wound that had already stopped bleeding. "You had too much wolfsbane entering your bloodstream."
"I only put some...to remove that wolf toxin. We keep some on us...at all times to...stop the toxins from bites.", he breathes out before tilting his head up, closing his eyes to rest.
"We don't have wolf toxins in our gums anymore...", I inform him and he lightly opens his peepers to glance at me. Ignoring his gaze, I slowly lay down on the bed, feeling exhaustion take over now that adrenaline had died down. "We have wolfsbane in our system so that is what is released in the bite we give."
"What kind of insane wolves are you??", he almost shouts but it wasn't anger, more like shock and annoyance mixed together.
"Our Alpha started this to get us an upper-hand in battles against the rogues, wolfsbane in our gums. It also makes our body completely fine with a limited amount of that natural poison if used against us.", I look at the ceiling, recalling when this idea was announced in the pack. "Now every pack member consumes it on a daily basis."
"And I added more to it...which resulted in all this", he adds, sounding like he's drifting off. I just nod. He lets out a sigh before laying down as well with a pained groan. I turn away from him before switching the lights off to go back to sleep. Seeing how much he suffered in one night, it was clear he too was completely spent.
I curl up with my back facing him. I close my eyes and the tears that were in them, slowly roll down my cheeks. I try not to sniffle. Suddenly his arm wraps around my waist and I go completely still as he presses his chest against my back. My senses get heightened and I patiently wait for him to do whatever he was planning to but he doesn't do anything inappropriate. I slowly relax when I suspect he has simply fallen asleep holding me.
"..princess...", he suddenly murmurs, making my eyes widen and my body tenses up again. I hold my breath. "I...", he continues, "...don't hate you..." With that he goes quiet again. I stay like that for a moment before closing my eyes again when I feel his steady breathing on my shoulder. I go back to sleep in his arms.
