Marlowe laughs, looking at you with warm eyes.

"I didn't think you were gone for that long," they say. Their smile falters a little, however, as they glance in the direction of the departing family. "That can't have been easy. You're obviously a good friend."

You're not sure exactly how to respond—but a moment later, Marlowe's hand finds yours, and suddenly, standing alone in the near dark, it seems so easy just to smile.
