Spellsword

Alice: "So? How did your first day go?"

Ellen: "It went alright, but I did end up in D Class"

We were on our ride back home from school. Today was just more of an introduction day, so the students went home early. Honestly I felt very happy, not only did I find out that I did in fact have magic inside me, but I also bested a teacher before he was forced to use magic. If only I could use magic then maybe I could of won.

Fabian: "I'm surprised someone like you even managed to get into this school, with no magic power whatsoever"

And joining us on our ride home was none other than my brother himself, always trying to bring me down. I was getting used to it by now though. I felt somewhat irritated at the fact that we share the same blood as I look at his short red hair before answering him.

Ellen: "Well actually it turns out I do possess magic. It was very faint when I placed my hand on that slab, tablet thingy but it did react to me"

Alice: "Really?!"

Alice's eyes lit up as I said those words, she's a very expressive person who doesn't fail at bringing a smile on my face.

Ellen: "But I still couldn't learn anything that could help me use magic"

Fabian: "So you're still useless"

Ellen: "Yes!"

Alice was about to speak up before I replied to Fabian. Sure I might be useless, but that's only in terms of magic power, I'll be sure to show my brother the work I have done, and show him and our father than I am not useless. We sat in the same places like we did on the ride over to school, with Alice and I facing towards Fabian on the other side.

Ellen: "But. I will learn magic. I promise I wont bring further disappointment to our family."

Alice smiled with Fabian staying silent not saying anything more to me as we continue our ride back home.

Since our family is a ducal family, we have basically a small part of the city in our domain, as people on the street watching our carriage go down the roads bowed as if they were being greeted by the king. It, definitely didn't sit right with me, I didn't ask to be worshiped, I wanted a normal life, not this. If the people under our domain were to find out about my lack of magic, I wonder what they would do, I'm sure they would just cast me aside if things were to take a turn for the worst.

Finally arriving home, Fabian was the first one to exit, followed by me, along with Alice behind me as we all headed inside the mansion. "It sure is big" I thought as I look up at where I had been staying for these 5 years before heading inside.

Mother: "Welcome back!"

To my surprise, my mom was also back early, leaving only my father away. The maids and butlers were serving my mother some tea and food whilst making sure the house was spotless. I never really took notice of them, but we actually do have a lot of people working here; I only really looked at Alice. She had been not only my best friend, but also a second mother, my tutor, she has been a very important part of my life here. If I could, I would run away with Alice, away from all this noble stuff and live somewhere more quiet and comfortable.

Mother: "So. How was your first day at school Ellen?"

Ellen: "It went well! I learnt that I do have magic!"

Fabian: "She is in Class D though"

Mother: "That's amazing news!

Seeming to have ignored Fabians remark, she proceeded to congratulate me with the fact of me indeed having magic.

Ellen: "I still have no idea how to use it though"

Alice: "Not a problem! I'll keep training you until it comes out!"

Bringing her hand to her chest in a triumphant fashion while saying that towards me. I really am thankful for everything Alice has done for me. My mother wearing a sweet gentle smile on her face as she held tea in her hand watching Alice and I, made me all the more motivated to make her proud of her daughter.

After our little talk with mom, Alice and I went straight back to our daily routine of sword practice. Unlike earlier with my teacher Gerald, we were practicing with our rapiers, they really did feel much better to use as the sounds of our swords clashed together in the courtyard. The sweat I saw from earlier when fighting the teacher was nowhere seen on Alice, she felt composed.

Ellen: "Hey Alice, what did you do before working for my parents?"

Alice: "I was a 'Spellsword' after graduating from Inasdale Academy, working under the army to fight against demons; but I left to help my friends bring up their children, namely you Ellen"

Ellen: "Spellsword?"

Alice: "It basically means someone who fights with both magic and sword"

I just learnt something cool, I never knew Alice used to work for the army, and as something cool like a Spellsword! My eyes lit up as we continued to dance with our swords, a fire now lit inside me. "I want to become a Spellsword too" I thought to myself. I really enjoyed fighting with the sword as the more I trained the more it felt natural, however if I wanted to become something like a Spellsword, I would need to figure out this stupid magic.

We continue to practice as I could feel myself getting better and better, being able to last longer during our sessions as this time we practiced for nearly 2 hours before stopping. Alice as usual didn't look out of breath at all, with me being the only one panting away like a fish out of water, as we sit at the bench in the courtyard.

Alice: "Good work as always Ellen, you're becoming quite a fine knight already hehe"

Ellen: "Is a knight like a Spellsword?"

Alice: "Not quite. Knights are more focused on the hand to hand combat with swords, as they are not as experienced with the use of magic. There are also mages who are the opposite, being more proficient in magic with no experience in hand to hand combat. Spellswords are like combining the two together"

Ellen: "Hmmm, I think I'd prefer to become a Spellsword like you though Alice"

Alice: "Oh?"

She looked a little embarrassed, I would too with having someone look up to you, but the sight of seeing her was cute that I couldn't help but smile.

Alice: "I'm sure you'll make a better Spellsword than me Ellen, I couldn't do what you're doing at your age; but you do need to figure out that magic if you do want to become one."

Ellen: "Yes! I'll keep trying as hard as I can, I want to become strong"

Alice: "You already are"

Now bringing me closer to her as we sit side by side, drinking away at our water, staring out at the green scenery in the courtyard. Seeing the beautiful sight reminded me from back then. The memories have gradually started to become less sad and more happy, knowing that I had a good life back there. I can't be hung up about it forever, I need to move on. Sure if I could, I'd love to turn back time and go back, but after meeting Alice who I have also grown fond of, I can't just throw her away.

We continue to idly chat on the bench as I stare off, wondering how everyone back home is going. "I do hope she is doing okay."

Time passes as we finish dinner for heading to bed, letting my hair out from the hair tie as my hair smacks against my back before jumping into bed. I'm not looking forward to school tomorrow but I hope I can learn something that could help me figure out my magic. Closing my eyes I drift off to sleep, imagining one day being able to use magic like what Alice did as my consciousness starts to fade, sinking back into the darkness.
