Chapter 11 Been Loving Her

Jessica walked out of the Dawn's gate with a few meager days of salary, feeling lost and dejected. She didn't expect to bump into someone.

"Why aren't you watching where you're going?" The man laughed and reached out to rub her forehead.

"David?" Jessica said, looking at him in surprise.

"I didn't expect you to remember my name." David said, raising his eyebrows. "So why didn't you call me the past few days?"

Jessica was immediately reminded of that day, and she felt embarrassed and uneasy. "I'm sorry," she answered, her voice thin as a mosquito's. "My phone was stolen that day. But he's right. You should know what kind of person I am. It's my fault for not telling you the truth. I apologize."

"You silly girl,"David said, and to Jessica's surprise, he not only didn't avoid her like a snake or scorpion but also smiled and flicked her forehead. "It's the present you who interacts with me. What you did in the past, what kind of person you were, what does it have to do with me?"

"No relation?" Jessica looked at him dazedly.

"Otherwise, should I look into your family history from hundreds of years ago?" David said, his gaze falling on the bag of wages in her hand. "You're not working here anymore?"

"Exactly," David continued, without waiting for a reply. "I need a secretary. I am dead in work without a secretary. Do you want to give it a try?"

"Me?" Jessica said, shaking her head instinctively. "I can't do it."

"Without trying, how do you know you can't do it? I remember you were a top student in the finance department at the London College. Working for me, it's actually me who would be undervaluing you," David persuaded. He smiled and touched her head. "Just think of it as helping me out. Okay? Then I have a secretary, and you have a job. This could be a fresh start for both of us."

Both of them were starting anew.

Starting anew --

Jessica stopped herself from refusing again. She had used all her strength to survive since she got out of prison, wasn't it for a new beginning?

Any kind of new beginning was good for her.

"Okay," Jessica nodded. "I'll go give it a try."

And so Jessica became David's secretary.

Jessica worried all night before departure. She was not sure if she could get along well with the staff of the Thompson family, and she was afraid that when people heard her name, they would think of the sensational murder case in New York City five years ago. But in just two weeks, none of her worries had come to pass. Perhaps David had already informed everyone, as they were all very friendly to her, giving her the illusion that she could really start a new life.

She loved that illusion of new life except for occasionally attending various banquets with David.

What Jessica didn't expect was that at that banquet, she would run into the two people she least wanted to see in her life.

The person she loved the most in her life, William!

And the person he loved the most in his life, Mia Hughes!

When William's eyes landed on her, Jessica quickly looked away and made the excuse of getting some wine. She held onto David's arm and moved away from his line of sight.

"William, what's catching your attention?" inquired Mia, noticing the intense focus in William's eyes. How could she stand beside him and not notice his unwavering gaze?

William took a sip of wine, but his knuckles were already pale from clenching his fist. He put down his wine glass and picked up his suit jacket to leave.

"I just saw Jessica Taylor. Were you looking at her?" Mia stopped him and said. "Last time I called you, you were also with her." She paused for a moment and said word by word, "actually, the one you've always loved is her, isn't it?"

Upon hearing those words, William's eyes quivered.
