Faced with such a question, Lucas was visibly confused. At first, he opened his mouth and was about to state his name and then plead for his life, but comprehending the first word, he was at a loss.
What did he mean by what am I? Are human races completely foreign to them?
Pressed by the intense stare, Lucas was forced to reply, "I'm a human. Um… A mortal."
Silence descended once again, and Lucas' heart rate never cooled down. Staring at the crimson-thin pair of eyes of the Devil, not only was it nerve-wracking, but staring at that ghoulish face that only exists in horror movies frightened him. He also thought he was inside the horror movie at the moment.
He could only hope he was the main character so he could survive and get away.
"No." The Devil's deep, menacing voice startled him awake.
"W-What?" Lucas asked, blurted.
The Devil was silent again, making Lucas about to go crazy. Although he was in the process of becoming insane, to the point he adapted to the Devil's existence and his predicament, he was still quite far from it. He still had a bit of his rationality left, but it would not last long against this Devil.
"You are a peculiarity, so I will leave you off for now. That is until you are the last, leaving me no choice."
His deep, menacing voice and his message scared Lucas witless. He was shaking as he continued to stare at the Devil, comprehending his words in his mind. Lucas felt there was something off about the Devil's decision, for there was no way he would let him live.
From the little time he had to examine his current place, he instantly connected it to a morgue, a dissecting lab for corpses. Since he asked what he was, unknowledgeable about his race, the Devil must have been about to study his body, and by then… he would already be dead.
Therefore, The Devil placing him on the tables conveyed he should have dissected him at any moment. But there appeared something that stopped him from doing so, making him state he would let him live for now.
There was also a possibility that before the Devil dissected his insides, he noticed something of an anomaly, causing him to state he was a peculiarity.
'Maybe… he noticed the Devil inside me?'
Yet, such thoughts were quickly discarded because of the Devil's reaction. Since the Devil inside him could fight against the Goddess, if he was not wrong about this Devil being weaker than the former, it should signify he has not discovered the Devil inside him yet. Because if he did, then the Devil must have been scared, but his reaction was contrary.
'What did he discover, though, for him to decide to keep me alive.'
Remembering the second sentence of the Devil, he couldn't help but shudder, hoping there would still be many before his turn. He didn't know what the Devil wanted to say, but from Draven's speculation, it should be different living beings he was about to dissect, and he was the last.
Suddenly, a reddish whip-like object coiled around his stomach, startling him awake. He gazed at it and discovered it was connected through the Devil's back. If he was not wrong, it should be the Devil's tail.
Lucas was sensible, so he let the tail move him around without a visible struggle despite his weight. Well, he weighed less than fifty kilograms, but still, it should not be enough for the thin tail to carry him easily.
"W-Where are you-."
"Shut up."
Lucas quickly shut his mouth with both of his hands covering it. Staring at the red bald back head of the Devil, he was thinking of where the Devil would take him. He wished it should not be inside an enormous cabinet that placed all the corpses inside in a sleeping position, similar to a coffin.
He would also die from suffocation that way, so he hoped it would not be there. Thankfully, before he had the time to scrutinize the vast place that appeared like a morgue, the Devil opened the gigantic wide double door and walked outside.
He fainted when the Devil took him in the hallway, so he was not aware of the direction where they were going. Because if he did, he would find out they were returning to the place where Lucas was teleported inside a small room.
'How many days have passed since I fainted?'
Lucas wondered, and his thoughts drifted to his classmates and the Goddess. By now, his classmates should have transmigrated into the world of Dreka and must have been welcomed by the noble from the Empire and most likely, by the Emperor himself.
Such a grandeur welcoming conveyed they would not live a life similar to Lucas's. They must have received gifts from nobles to curry their favor, and those who awakened an impressive Title must have received a prosperous land for them to live.
Lucas couldn't help but envy them, but what could he do?
Envying them would bring nothing either, so he quickly focused on his plan for now. He had to run from this place, and it would be better to teleport to the Dreka world. But he had no knowledge to activate the teleportation magic array aside from the name given by the Devil inside him.
Therefore, he badly wanted to steal the power and knowledge of the Devil, but he couldn't even find where he was, except by knowing he was inside his body. Furthermore, how could he steal it when he was powerless: without having the magical power that the Goddess and the Devil displayed?
Despite his goal to steal the Devil's power, he didn't know where to start.
But the desire to become strong and expel the Devil inside him never diminished.
'I wonder if he is aware of it?'
Creak
A door opened, awakening him from his deep thoughts. Glimpsing inside the room through the half-opening door, he quickly felt a familiarity with it. He then realized it was where he appeared when he landed his vision on the small teleportation magic array.
Before he could compose himself, he suddenly found the floor inside the room closer to his face. He doesn't have time to react, so he relies on his instinct: his hands move forward to prevent his face from colliding with the floor, saving him some bruises and aches.
Bang!
The door closed without a single word from the Devil.
