Chapter 44: The reveal

“We were holding him,” she said, “in a private cell, in complete isolation. There were three guards at three separate checkpoints. To get to his cell, you had to pass through all three, and you needed both ID cards and access codes. That’s not counting what you needed to even get into the building.” Jessica stared at him. She was expecting the gravity of what she was saying to cause some kind of reaction.

“So how did it happen?” He didn’t really need to ask. But it was nice to be sure.

“We don’t know.” That was true. Fucking Collins. “All we know is that someone came through, using security codes from the CIA, walked right past the first two guards. The last guard we found asleep at his station. We suspect it was chloroform.”

That didn’t bode well. “What happened to the hacker?”

“Shot twice in the chest.”

“Wow.” Poor Quinn. He was a hacker. Which meant he had it coming. But just because he had it coming didn’t mean he deserved it.
