Chapter Eighty [The heartfelt acknowledgments of regret]

When Daniele heard David's voice reverberating through the loudspeaker, she was still asleep in her room. She was also startled by the humming of people and vehicles outside the gates, which made her feel inquisitive. She slowly stood up and moved toward the open windows, covering them with a double curtain of white lace to shield the interior from the harsh light and dust brought in by the wind. She stretched her weak arms, which were still trembling from the sedatives she had received, and looked out.

David abruptly realized that she was there and asked Augustus to sporadically continue his emceeing, turning the microphone to him as he disappeared from the assembly to go upstairs. He noticed Daniele was still peeking through the long, white curtains covering the windows, and she didn't notice him coming. David carefully removed a damp, clean, soiled, warm towel from the bathroom.
