A Hope

It is time to move on from this tower. That was the thought that I had in my mind when I gathered all of my stuff. I pulled a folded paper from my bag and opened it. I read it forgetting what had been written on the paper when I got it. The ink was a little smudged, but I could still read it.

"GO TO MOTTIE CITY IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY. WE HAD A NEW BASE THERE UNDERGROUND. YOU WILL BE SAFE."

I hope that it will be as safe as they make it seem to be. I need a place to call home even if it is temporary. I haven't seen a single place so far where those monsters have not gotten. It is scary, but it is said that a city exists on the coast. It is built inside of another city that was destroyed when this war started. It is unknown how they managed to push these monsters out of the place. We just know it happened.

I took an hour to collect water before going down the towers ladder. Everything was quiet, but EVERYTHING was quiet now when the fighting was going on. The one thing that has been heard in the past couple of months was the sound of radio messages. They went silent about a month ago. It was after the radio announced that the monsters stormed our capital city being lead by a monster who seemed to be leading them as a general of sorts.

It was followed by an explosion that could be heard from over 100 miles away. It seemed to shake the surrounding area to the ground. I just hope That when I get to the city it will be easy enough to find these survivors. I was pulled from my thoughts as dust kicked up as my feet hit the ground. It forced me to pull my mask and goggles over my face.

I started to walk to the north hoping to get out of this fucking desert soon. I made sure as I walked north I passed from building to building to avoid possible detection. The hard part was as I passed through these houses I could see how people left their lives behind. Many of them looked like someone hit the pause button on their actions and removed the people form the scene. Many tables had been set with everything for dinner. Some of them had gotten as far as putting food on the table or plates. Some of the houses smelled of rotten food before you even entered the house.

I took time to appreciate the way the homes had been decorated and the differences between them. Some of them had T.V.'s and lights still on inside which was wild to see. It has been so long since life had been in some of these buildings. I wanted to see if they had any supplies left over, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I always find myself thinking of what if these people return. That is even if I know that they wouldn't come back home to the building.

My heart dropped a bit as I left the city and saw nothing but sand. Before the war this land was covered with grass and life. Since then as life was removed from the land grass died away with the help of bombings from our military. Of in the distance the horizon twisted and turned from the heat manipulating my vision. The longer I walked I could feel the weight of my gear.

I walked for hours and hours trying to find the end of the desert, but it seemed endless. I couldn't keep going anymore. The heat was cooking me alive as it was. I struggled at first but managed to pitch a tent over a place. I started to dig a hole under the tent feeling the heat of the sand as I kept digging. I started to find cool sand, and finally solid earth under it. I climbed into the hole feeling better as the cool earth surrounded me and the shade stood over me.

I didn't fall asleep, but sat in thought about my situation. I was in the middle of the desert with no signs of it ending in any direction. I pulled out a flashlight and a map trying to find where I was. The map itself was out of date even before the war started. I never knew the place I was in or what it was before. I know where I am going and where I came from, but I have no idea where I am. This isn't good for me.
