They needed to do something with the police officer. While Jonathan’s reign of serial killings was over before it had gotten too far or anyone had connected that they were the same person, it still worked as the most believable story.
The secret to a great lie is that it should have a grain of truth in it.
“I don’t understand,” Harley said. “Why don’t we have him be the final victim of the serial killer, and have the killer just escape and disappear? Cold case, but nothing bad happens to his memory.”
Walter shook his head. “It’s an unfortunate truth,” he said, “that people will much more easily accept a negative lie than a positive truth. Leaving the case unsolved means more people will look into it, which makes it potentially unravel.”
Harley wiped her hands. She’d washed them four times, but they still felt dirty. “But do we need to paint him as a serial killer?”
