Dragon Slaying Part 3

The dragon's wings began flapping, and it soon took flight.

"What… will… you… do… now..."

Both Olivia and I just stared at the dragon as he flew up and began circling us in the sky.

"Just as planned" I mumbled under my breath.

There wasn't much we could do besides try and damage its wings to make it fall to the ground so we can continue the battle on the ground. Luckily, I have just the thing to bring that dragon down.

"Olivia! Cover Me!"

"Got It!"

She came over and started covering me while I used the ability in my necklace. There are a few class change items in the game, and this is one of them; they are very rare, and usually rewarded for special events or loot boxes. This one in particular swaps me to the Mage class and converts most of my attack stats to intelligence, as well as my agility to magic defense. It sounds useful, right? Sadly it isn't usually useful while in an actual fight due to how it works. You have to pretty much stay still and not attack while everything converts; in total it takes maybe a minute or two to finish up, but two minutes of standing still not attacking while in the middle of a fight usually isn't viable.

Ice and frost rained down on us from above while Olivia tried shielding me. Just a bit more time. The attacks didn't stop, and we were running out of potion to heal with.

"Come on… Come on… Almost There…"

"…"

"It's Done!"

Olivia moved out of the way, and I shouted…

"FLAME SPEAR"

The spell activated, and eight spears of fire appeared next to me, four on my left, and four on my right. All of them shot up and launched toward the dragon. It used its breath to try and stop them but only managed to destroy three. Two of the spears hit its left wing, one hit its right, and the other two hit its body.

It was very effective. All I have to do is make sure my attacks are focused solely on one of the wings, then surely it will fall to the ground.

"FLAME BURST"

Balls of fire appeared in the sky, dealing massive damage. This caused the dragons' circular path around us in the sky to diverge and become haphazard. If you can't predict where something will go, then flame burst is pretty useless. Guess I'll need to keep using flame spear.

"FLAME SPEAR"

Another eight spears launched at the dragon; four of which hit its wings. At this point, the dragon was focusing on defending against the spears and flame bursts so much that it stopped attacking us altogether. It was being pushed back, and it knew it. The only way it could possibly win at this point is if it takes the offensive. The odds are definitely not in its favor, but it's a better idea than defending while taking constant damage. Its ice breath rained down on us, but I was prepared.

"FIRE WALL"

A wall of flames sprouted from the ground and blocked the ice attack. This whole time Olivia just kind of watched in awe; there wasn't much she could do right now besides take in this breathtaking sight and launch a spell here and there. She knew she would have to work even harder to get anywhere near what was unfolding in front of her eyes. She was filled with determination.

"FLAME SPEAR"

Even more spears shot at the dragon, hitting it, and dealing even more damage. I was running a bit low on MP; I could maybe cast flame spear three more times, but I couldn't let it show that we were both in a battle of endurance.

"JUST FALL ALREADY! FLAME SPEAR!"

Spears of fire shot at it again, but this time holes started forming in the dragon's wings. It was finally falling down. It flapped faster, but it was to no avail as it began to descend back to the ground. I didn't have enough MP to finish him, so Olivia would have to do it.

"Olivia!"

"Yeah?"

"Do you have a great sword in your inventory?"

"Yes, but it's too heavy to hold it properly."

"Equip it"

She took the sword out of her inventory, unable to wield it right or take a proper stance. I started casting buffs on her.

"Weight Reduction. Agility Boost. Fire Boost. Regeneration. Cold Resist. Negative Status Resist."

"Wow, it feels so… light. It's almost weightless."

"Listen… I'm almost all out of MP, and I don't have time to change classes again, so it's all up to you now."

"Wai- HUH!? I CAN'T KILL A DRAGON!"

I put my hand on her shoulder.

"Yes, you can. Now hurry and go beat him while he's disoriented and weak. Be the hero and slay the dragon."

"…"

"You're right, I can do this. Also, please don't touch my shoulder like that, it's weird."

"Oh, sorry. I thought it was inspirational."

The dragon crashed into the ground head first, and before it could do anything, Olivia rushed in and began her attack. With her boosted agility and the weightlessness of her sword, she was faster than ever. Parts of the dragon were charred, and while our swords couldn't cut through the normal armored skin, they could cut through the burnt parts; I guess the fire weakened its armor. The dragon retaliated with attacks from both its claws and tails, but Olivia easily dodged them while not relenting on her attacks.

"I'VE… DESTROYED… NATIONS…! I'VE… LIVED… FOR… EONS…! I… WON'T… LOSE… TO… A… HUMAN…!"

The attacks got faster, taking Olivia by surprise. It swiped its claw at her, surely it would hit.

*SHWING*

She successfully parried the attack.

"WHAT!"

It seems even the dragon didn't expect that, and being parried left it open for a counterattack. Olivia jumped up and swung down with all her force on the dragon's long neck. It didn't cut it or slice into it, but the force was enough that the dragon fell completely to the ground. It tried getting up, but each time it failed and fell back down. It must be disorientated.

Olivia breathed heavily as she approached the dragon's left eye.

"Tell me where I don't belong again."

The dragon looked at her before saying one last word.

"Mercy…"

She stabbed the sword into one of the few unarmored parts of its body, its eye. Once she did this, the dragon disappeared and only dust and particles were left. A pile of loot appeared where the dragon died. Dragon parts, gold, enchanted weapons, armor, and a bunch of other stuff.

I walked up to Olivia.

"Congrats! You did it! See, I told you."

"Hehe, yeah, thanks. I just can't believe we killed a dragon."

"No, YOU killed the dragon."

"Stop trying to be humble; It doesn't make you look cool."

She was smiling ear to ear. That must have been really intense and fun for her. I'm glad. Now all we have to do is the long and arduous task of going through and splitting all the loot, then turn in her quest.
