"Well, I'll be" I looked out the window and noticed Zoey was back at Bill's grave right at 8. am when guests were allowed to start visiting the graveyard.
"Are you ready to go to the farm's market, Ghost?"
Ghost is a Yorkshire Terrier. The little dog hopped up and down at the door, barking loudly.
"Settled down Ghost," I chuckled to myself. I am excited to get the graveyard ready for fall. My hands grabbed my keys, and I headed out the front door, little Ghost flowing behind me. Glancing at Zoey, I felt so sorry for her. She still looked miserable.
"We need to cheer up our number one guest, "huh, pal?"
Opening the door to the truck and letting Ghost hop in the passenger sidecar seat, the excitement fell through my soul. "And we're off." I blasted some good old-fashioned country music. "We know how to get down, huh Ghost?" I patted him on the head gently, my heart feels so much love for this little dog. Ghost looked out the window with his head sticking out of it. Ghost barked as I passed the hamburger joint.
"Ghost, now you're hungry?" Pulling into the joint, Ghost grew more excited, and I noticed.
"You're lucky there are no cars in front of us."
"I will take one hamburger and an ice cream cone.''
"That'll be five dollars," said the lady through the speaker. Ghost rushed from the passenger seat into my lap.
"Ghost, you hungry again," said a girl named Katie, who we grew to know due to Ghost's countless visits.
"Yeah, we always have to stop to get him a hamburger." I chuckled.
"Silly dog," said Katie, handing me the bag and the ice cream.
"See you later, darling".
"Bye, bye," said Katie. Ghost happily awaited his food.
"Get to your seat first, Ghost."
Once he was in his seat, I handed Ghost his burger and ice cream. The dog chowed down his food happily. I rolled my eyes. "You're a mess."
The farmers market wasn't too far down the road from the burger joint. Ghost was already done with his treats by the time we arrived at the farm's market.
"You even taste that Ghost." Laughing, I couldn't help it; he was so silly. He wagged his tail happily.
My hands picked up Ghost, placed him in my arms, and happily walked into the farm's market. Grabbing a shopping cart, I put Ghost inside. Everyone at the farmer's market knew Ghost and me. I walked over to the pumpkins. "They got some big ones, Ghost."
"Getting some pumpkins for the cemetery, I see," said a man named Frank.
"Yes, sir." "Everyone in the community loves how you decorate the cemetery for fall," said Frank.
"Well, I love fall, and I love working for the cemetery."
"We are lucky to have you," said Frank.
"Thanks, pal," I moved on down the aisle.
"Pumpkin spice coffee, get out here; we are getting that."
"Hey Ghost,'' said many of the shoppers as we were passing by. Ghost wagged his tail in exchange. I got in line at the checkout, and luckily there were only a few people in front of us.
"Hey there, ghost," said a girl named Molly, who was checking out at the register. Ghost barked excitedly, knowing Molly was going to offer him a treat.
"Settle down, Ghost."
"I have your treat like normally," said Molly with a smile.
"Thanks, Molly."
"He is a character, that dog," said Molly.
"He keeps me on my toes," I laughed.
"See you next time,'' Molly said.
"I look forward to it."
"Ready to home, Ghost." I headed towards the front door.
I pushed the shopping cart to my truck and loaded up the plump pumpkins in the tailgate. Ghost barked excitedly.
"Yeah, buddy, it's going to be so much fun."
I picked him up from the shopping cart. I'll put that away for you, said Frank, grabbing the shopping cart.
"Thanks." I smiled. I opened the door to the truck, and Ghost jumped inside.
It wasn't a long drive from the farm's market to the cemetery. We passed the burger joint again, and Ghost barked excitedly out the window. "Not again, buddy." I laughed. We finally reached the ceremony, and we parked by the shed. I open the door, and Ghost happily ran out of the truck.
I looked over at the girl; she still sat at the cemetery. I wonder if I should recommend her to see a counselor. Oh, yeah, that sounds lovely. I think you need professional help; that's precisely what I am going to do.
I opened the tailgate to the truck and started setting the pumpkins out one by one. Ghost sat on his favorite rock next to the shed; he liked taking long naps there. I start grabbing the pumpkin one by one and sitting them down around the graveyard. With the fall leaves, all these pumpkins just look perfect.
I glanced over at the girl, who still sat like a statue. I noticed my stomach growling. That poor thing has to be hungry. I walked over in her direction. I will be as casual as possible and ask her if she wants a snack or something; calm, not creepy, I got this.
I finally approached the peculiar girl. "Um, are you getting hungry or something?" I rubbed the back of my head.
"What?" she asked. She seemed shy.
"Well, um, you sat there for a long time, and I was wondering if you ate anything."
"I am not hungry,'' said Zoey.
"You sure?"
"I know this may appear nuts for me to spend so much time here, but right now, it's the only thing that makes sense," she said.
"I understand when I lost my wife, I was lost, and I somewhat still am."
Zoey nods her head.
"If you need anything, just let me know, okay."
"Hey, Kevin, can I ask you something?" she said.
"Yeah, sure."
"Have you ever lost your memory?" she said.
"No, I haven't."
Should I get this girl some help, possibly a doctor? "
"Have you?" I tried my best to sound polite.
Zoey looked over her shoulder off into the trees.
" It's okay, Zoey; you can tell me anything.''
"I can't remember the past few weeks, I mean, I think it's only a few weeks," she said.
"Oh well, what's the last thing you remember?"
"Leaving from some restaurant or maybe a type of gas station, the memory isn't clear," she said.
"Okay."
"I remember who I am and personal information, just not my whereabouts the last few days," she said.
"Interesting," I swallowed hard. "Do you think maybe you might have hit your head or something?"
"Yeah, It's possible," she said.
"I would go see a doctor, maybe."
Zoey nods her head.
"You do remember where your house is, right?"
Zoey says, "no."
"Zoey, where have you been sleeping?"
"In the woods," said Zoey, pointing across the cemetery.
"The woods." I felt heartbroken.
"Yes," she said.
" You're not doing that anymore."
"I am fine," she said.
"No, Zoey, you're going to stay with me."
" I can't intrude," she said. "
"You're not.''
My stomach growls again, reminding me that I was hungry.
"We need to get going, because I am hungry."
I rubbed my belly.
Zoey laughs. "Thank you," she said.
"Don't think anything of it."
We walked back toward the pumpkin, and we finished putting the last few out. Ghost comes to investigate Zoey. "Don't worry; he's nice, but very nosy."
"I love doggies," said Zoey, getting on the ground, and letting Ghost jump into her lap."
Doggies.
"You ready for some din din Ghost.''
Ghost jumps from Zoey's lap, racing to the door. "You ready, Zoey,'' reaching out a hand to help her from the ground.
"Thanks," said Zoey.
We walk toward the house. I opened the door for her.
"This is a cute little place," she said.
"Thanks; it's quiet and peaceful.''
"Make yourself at home, turn on the television, blast up some music, whatever you like.''
"Alright," said Zoey.
"What do you want to eat? I am seriously starving."
"I am not a picky eater," she said.
"That's good, because I am, so things are selective around here."
Zoey laughs. "Does salad sound okay?"
"You can never go wrong with salad," said Zoey.
"You're Right." We walked into the kitchen, and Ghost was already waiting by his bowl.
"Silly dog." I laughed.
I grabbed a bag of dog food from the cupboard and filled his bowl. Ghost wasted no time chowing down.
"Now for our food." I grabbed the lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and ranch dressing from the refrigerator.
"Do you like ranch?" holding up the bottle.
"Yes," said Zoey.
I take everything to a tiny little table in the corner of the kitchen. Luckily, I have two chairs. We both fill our bowls.
"So, we are going to have to figure out a way to get that memory back."
Zoey shrugged her shoulders, "I hope something will help,'' she said.
"Maybe we can drive around town tomorrow and see if you recognize anything."
"That sounds like a great idea," said Zoey.
It wasn't long before we finished our dinner." I will go get the bedroom ready."
"You have one bedroom?" asked Zoey.
"Yes."
"Where will you sleep?" She asked."
"On the couch, I will be fine."
"You sure?" she asked.
"One hundred percent positive."
"Would you like to take a shower or anything?"
"Yes, please,'' said Zoey.
"I am sure I have some clothes for you to borrow."
I walked into the bedroom, grabbed a plain white t-shirt and a pair of boxers, and put it in the bathroom.
While Zoey was in the shower, I changed the bedsheets. This day ended differently than I imagined. I hear Zoey open the bathroom door. Oh goodness, she looks beautiful in that plain white t-shirt. Don't stare at her; you'll freak her out.
"Your room is ready." I try not to stutter.
"Thank you. I don't know how I will ever repay you,'' she said.
" Don't think nothing of it." Zoey smiled and left to go to my room.
She may be a little loopy, but she sure is beautiful.
