CHAPTER 26
Eric's mother frowned at Lucie; even though she didn't understand our English, she could tell by our looks, especially Lucie's; she always concealed her true colors by smiling at people and speaking sweetly but sarcastically. And now she was exhibiting it with a horrible face, a knife-like glint in her eyes, and a big smile that revealed how glad she was to have me cornered with her slanderous comments.
"I was just talking to her, M-mother." Lucie's voice was trembling.
"No more, Lucie; that's all. Just eat right now."
Lucie rushes out, not even finishing her dinner.
"Are you all right, my dear?"
Is she worried about me? Auntie's tight-lipped grin and moist eyes almost make her cry. Auntie, like Lucie, can change her expressions quickly.
"I'm good, Auntie; maybe Mrs. Lucie is just worried about her husband. That's why she's so upset."
"To be honest, I knew it wasn't your fault. I've known my sons since they were born. He must have initially upset you."
