It was horrifying. Edna, however, didn't have the strength to fight back. Her wounds hadn't healed, and one day was not enough for her to recover.
Moreover, Edna was hungry and thirsty, and the potions her stepmother gave her made her nauseous and wanted to vomit.
Under these circumstances, Edna wouldn't be able to fight back. Freedom would only be a dream. She would never be able to find her freedom or return the glass bottle to Luca. She wouldn't be able to see her master for one last time either.
Jonathan sat in front of Edna, watching the girl's face, which looked disheveled due to wounds and dirt. After being knocked unconscious by one of the guards, Edna fell to the ground, causing the girl to get very dirty.
"You are so disgusting. How could I ever like you back then? I must be blind. And after you stabbed me that night, I realized that you weren't even worth looking at. You're the ugliest girl I've ever met."
Edna felt dizzy. She would probably pass out soon.
"You are a cursed child. You ruined everything, Edna. If only that night you didn't stab me, maybe we would have been married now, and I would have treated you well. My business would also start, and Marquess Westfall would still be able to provide bloodstocks for the nobles.
"But you were being selfish. You chose to run away, and the Westfall family lost everything. The thieves stole all the bloodstock and even injured your step sister, Lucy. She was about to marry Mr. Frederickson, but she was killed that night.
"Your father is depressed, Edna. All because of you. If only you didn't run away, you could help Lucy. She would have been getting married to a rich man. And our family economy would get better! But you abandoned us. You didn't want to make a few sacrifices for your family. If you married me, you could probably get Westfall in your name soon."
Edna couldn't hear Jonathan's every word. Everything the man said was too painful. The man kept blaming her for everything that had happened. Lucy was injured and killed, her father was depressed, and the business of the family didn't work well, all because Edna didn't marry him.
Jonathan gripped Edna's cheeks again, forcing her to drink the potion. Edna wanted to spit it out because the potion tasted so disgusting. She was suffering. Yet she couldn't refuse nor could she escape.
Jonathan looked at Edna with disdain.
"You are so disgusting. Much worse than trash. Ungrateful girl. Your father brought you to this family and gave you a decent life. If I had a cursed daughter like you, I might have left you on the side of the road and let you die alone. Maybe your mother also died because of you."
Edna started crying again when Jonathan brought about her mother. Even in this desperate moment, she had no memories of her mother at all. Edna wanted to meet her mother, even if it was only once, whether it was in a dream or just a hallucination. She missed a mother figure.
Or maybe Edna had to die first so she could meet her mother?
Marionette, one of her stepsisters, came to the basement where Edna was held captive.
"Marionette..." Edna mumbled weakly, hoping that Marionette would show her some mercy, although it was almost impossible to happen.
"Oh, so this is the culprit who ruined the Westfall family? The selfless bitch who destroyed my family," Marionette hissed as she drew closer.
Marionette opened her fan. She pushed her nose up to smell the unpleasant scent coming out of Edna. The girl was covered in wounds and mixed with the unpleasant smell of the potion her uncle had forced her to drink.
Edna, who was limping in the chair, couldn't respond. She could only hear the approaching footsteps. It was useless. Marionette would never help her. In this house, no one sided with her. So far, Edna had survived in this place by herself, by taking advantage of their pity.
After she ruined everything, the pity was gone, and she just needed to wait for the time to get their punishment.
"Uncle, how could you want to marry such a detestable woman?" asked Marionette in a condescending tone. She lifted Edna's face with her fan, revealing the girl's face which was full of dried blood, and traces of green potion were also on her lips and chin.
"Oh, come on, Marionette. At that time, I wanted to marry her so she would stay in the Westfall family. We will be doomed her blood was given to her husband's family later. I… don't like her at all."
"Ah ... I understand now," replied Marionette who then threw Edna's head away.
"A woman like you... you know… Dad hates you now."
"Dad?" asked Edna in a hoarse voice, using the little strength she had left.
"Correct. He hates you, Edna. Dad said he would kill you with his own hands if he saw you. You know Lucy is his first child, you're just a prostitute child who accompanied him during his expedition." A wicked smile graced Marionette's face.
She then continued, "That's why Mom kept you out of Dad's reach right now. Because if you are brought directly to him, you will be killed instantly, and we will have no chance to squeeze your blood dry."
Edna shook her head. She didn't want to believe Marionette's words. However, what Marionette had said might be true.
After all, Edna was just the daughter of a prostitute who had caused the death of the Marquess' first daughter. If only Edna was there, she would have been able to help Lucy more quickly.
Edna felt like her heart was being stabbed by thousands of swords. She now lost her father's love and affection. She didn't have any memories of her mother, and all she hoped for was her father right now. But it seemed her father would never be able to forgive her mistakes either.
