CHAPTER 5: PRE-WEDDING JITTERS
Later that evening in the Pierce's household, the whole family was gathered at dinner. The atmosphere was tense as everyone ate quietly. There was not a Single chatter as usual, it was just quiet.
After the dinner and the maids had cleared the table, Mr Raymond Pierce spoke. He cleared his throat and began.
Good evening everyone. I'm here to inform you all that in two days your sister Diana will be getting married.
Jason, Raymond Pierce's first son spoke "what the hell dad?"
"Is that why the atmosphere around the table is so gloom today?" Phoebe their last born spoke.
"Hmm good for her that she's getting married then", the second child Rebekah spoke next.
"Rebekah for once you should try having feelings like a human being" Jackson the 3rd child chipped in.
The siblings quickly got into an argument. In the midst of the chaos Diana kept mute and didn't say a single word.
"Diana are you not going to say anything about this?" Phoebe asked reminding her sister that she was supposed to speak up. Diana smiled at her sadly and still did not say anything.
Raymond Pierce having had enough of his children's bickering slapped his hand on the table and commanded with a stern face.
"Everyone be quiet". Immediately silence came back to the table. "Now I didn't say this or bring it up so we will discuss it. Diana is getting married and that is final. I only said it so you will support your sister. So, your either together with your mom, sister and i in this or your out of it. And anyone who doesn't support will have to go find a place to live and get their own jobs".
"what!" Jason spoke again, "dad at least tell us why this is happening".
Raymond looked at his son and frowned, "Jason i don't owe you an explanation and don't go asking your sister because she owes you no explanation either".
Jackson looked at his sister, "Dee did you really agree to this?" Diana nodded at him.
Rebecca looked at her and got pissed. "Did the cat got your tongue Diana that you can't say actual words?"
"I am okay with this", Diana shouted in turn. "Is that what you want to hear?" The tears she had been trying to keep in all evening came rushing out again she quickly wiped it off and stood up. "Dad please you will have to excuse me''. Everyone turned to stare at her and it was all pity that was written on their faces.
Katherine looked at her daughter and didn't know what to say. "Diana baby,"....Katherine started.
"Mom!" Diana cut her short. Katherine nodded her head and kept quiet.
"Diana you can go if that's what you want". Diana pushed her chair back so it made scraping noises as she headed directly for her room to continue her crying where she left off.
"Dad can i leave too?" Phoebe stood to excuse herself. ''No Phoebe, you will sit and hear the plan then you tell your sister later".
"Here is the plan, i don't want any of you asking your sister about this again Mr Pierce stated. This conversation will not leave this table. I have already contacted the Higgins".
"Hold on dad, for a moment. You mean the Higgins Higgins, like Hillary Higgins?" Phoebe asked in an excited tone.
''Yes!" Her father replied.
Jackson looked at them. "And who the hell is that?" Everyone ignored his question as Rebecca asked. "So she's getting married to their son James Alfred Higgins?"
"Yes!" Their father answered again.
"OmG!" Phoebe half yelled
Rebecca smirked as she yelled, ''why are you so happy anyway, no one's ever really seen him for the past 10years and you don't know what he looks like now!"
Phoebe calmed down from her earlier excitement and frowned seemingly finding sense in what her sister said.
"And how did you ladies get all this information" Katherine asked them,
"Duh! Mom internet of course" Phoebe responded rather gloomily.
Raymond hushed them again and continued. "No Matter how he is, the decision has already been made".
Jason wanted to talk but his father held up his finger for him not to be interrupted again till he was done. "As i was saying, i have already contacted the Higgins family and they say it will be a small wedding with just family and a few friends according to what their son wants because he doesn't want the internet knowing about him getting married just yet".
''Why, because our sister is such a disgrace?" Jackson chipped in.
"Jackson!" Raymond Pierce roared and slapped his hands on the table, "one more word and i will practically kick you off this table and this house in general". Jackson kept quiet and silently fumed inside. "I will send the venue of the wedding to the group chat you don't have to do much, just appear at your own sister's wedding".
Mr Pierce stood up and with the help of his wife and walked towards their bedroom as the children watched.
Jackson stood up again and shouted behind their retreating backs. "So, your just going to give our sister away like that your own daughter like she means nothing right?" But it all fell on deaf ears because the man he was talking to barely heard him.
Phoebe ran up to her sisters room while Jackson followed at her heel. They tried to open Diana's door but found it locked. "Diana!'' They both called out to her at the same time but she didn't respond.
Phoebe sighed and turned to her brother, "i guess she has to be alone now bro tomorrow morning we talk to her before i go to school and you work.
"Ok, let's do that then". They both dispersed and went their separate ways.
Meanwhile Diana was done crying, she sat quietly in the silence of her room and stared at the card of the man who was going to be her husband as she recalled the events that had happened earlier that day, and now she thought about it, he was also a victim and the way she spoke to him was really uncalled for. She wasn't a rude person to start with now she wondered just exactly what he will think of her and besides marrying him was not such a bad idea after all, besides she had nothing to lose. And with those thoughts in mind, Diana made up her mind then and there to actually get married to him.
She picked up her phone and dialed his number, he picked on the second ring. ''Hello?''
Diana didn't know why her heart beat fast just hearing him say hello but she sure as hell was sure of the next words she was going to say to him.
"Mr Pierce, i have decided to get married to you even though i never had much choice about it in the first place. My mind is made up and i'm also sorry for the way i talked to you earlier, it was really uncalled for". Diana said all this in one breath and after speaking it was silence that greeted her. She felt he had cut the call so she brought it out from her ear and looked at it, it was still connected she put it back in her ear again and said ''hello, are you still there?"
"A woman that can apologize, mhm". James finally spoke up. Diana didn't know whether he was trying to compliment her or not.
"Apology accepted Diana, and since i will be your husband you should drop the Mr Pierce and just call me James. I am also willing to marry you Diana". With those words alone, Diana felt like stars were shining bright in her heart, she quickly felt warm inside.
"Since there's nothing left for us to say, i will see you on our wedding day then Diana. Your father will give you the details about the wedding, have a good night rest". He cut the call directly.
Diana kept staring at her phone even after he cut for two straight minutes before she smiled and went to bed.
James was in his study when her call came, he didn't know it was her at first he just answered the call absent mindedly but after hearing her speaking and especially apologizing to him, he was surprised. He had already tagged her as that kind of woman that didn't know how to apologize ever and then she had said she wanted to marry him despite everything. A ghost of a smile appeared on his lips as he thought back to their earlier conversation before it disappeared again. He shifted the thoughts of Diana from his mind and went back to work. Well everything he had said to her was true. He wanted to marry her too.
