CHAPTER FOURTY ONE: SERENA BROOKS

As the power tests reach their culmination, all eyes turn to Maya Thompson, the final contender to step forward. With a resolute expression, Maya commands the attention of the crowd as she summons her spirit beast, a magnificent falcon. The graceful creature materializes beside her, its feathers shimmering in the light. A surge of anticipation ripples through the spectators as Maya and her falcon lock gazes. They share an unspoken bond, a connection forged through countless hours of training and understanding. In perfect synchrony, they unleash their combined power upon the device before them.

Energy crackles in the air as the falcon unleashes a breathtaking display of aerial prowess, soaring high above the arena. Maya remains grounded, her unwavering focus channeled into manipulating the currents of power that surround her. The air itself seems to obey her command, swirling with raw energy. With a swift movement, the falcon dives towards the device, its wings slicing through the air like blades. Maya's hands follow suit, guiding the unleashed energy towards their intended target. A surge of power engulfs the device, causing the numbers [L-114] to materialize—a testament to Maya's unparalleled potential.

The spectators watch in awe as Maya and her falcon complete their display of strength. The air crackles with residual energy, a tangible testament to their abilities. Maya's face radiates with a sense of accomplishment and determination, as if she has discovered a new facet of her own potential.

With the power tests completed, Kane addressed the assembled students. He emphasized the importance of striving to improve and not becoming the least among their peers. He announced a one-hour break, allowing the students to refuel and enjoy their lunch in the bustling food hall. Kael and Lyra, deep in conversation about their classmates and the fierce competition they faced, navigated through the crowd towards the food hall, guided by their watches' map function.

As the students dispersed from the grand arena, their hunger gnawed at them, compelling them to seek sustenance. Kael and Lyra walked side by side, their footsteps echoing through the corridor as they discussed the power tests they had just endured.

"What do you think of our classmates?" Kael inquired, his voice laced with curiosity and anticipation.

Lyra pondered for a moment before replying, "Well, we're definitely among the top 30, but it's clear that we have fierce competition ahead of us. We can't afford to relax, or we'll be trampled by our classmates."

Kael nodded in agreement, understanding the gravity of the situation. The two friends continued their journey, their watches guiding them towards the food hall. Their stomachs growled audibly as they pushed open the doors, greeted by a wave of noise emanating from within. The bustling hall was alive with conversation, yet the building's soundproofing kept the clamor contained.

Amidst the sea of students, Kael and Lyra weaved through the crowd, their trays laden with food. They scanned the room, searching for an available place to sit. Just as they began to lose hope, a familiar face from their class caught their attention. It was Isabella, the girl with the queen bee spirit beast, sitting alone at a table.

"Come and sit here with us," Isabella called out, her voice warm and inviting. "There are three seats remaining."

Grateful for the invitation, Kael and Lyra made their way to Isabella's table. They joined her, their trays clattering onto the surface as they settled in. Engaging in lively conversation, they exchanged stories and impressions of the power tests they had just experienced.

Amidst their conversation, a sudden commotion broke out, drawing their attention. They turned to see Ezra Misthaven seated at a particular table, warding off anyone attempting to join him. A boy named Jamal from their class dared to challenge him, attempting to claim a seat for himself. Tensions rose as the two exchanged heated words.

"F*ck off before I make you!" Ezra barked, his voice dripping with contempt.

Unyielding, Jamal defiantly pulled a seat for himself, only to be met with a powerful blow from Ezra. The force was so great that Jamal was flung towards the area reserved for second-year students. On a collision course with a girl sitting alone at her table, panic rippled through the surrounding students.

The girl with short brown hair and eyes, seemingly 14 years old, reacted with lightning speed. Without even looking, she conjured a shield made of synthera, effectively blocking Jamal's trajectory. He crashed into the shield, rebounding and falling to the floor, gasping for breath. Her name was Serena Brooks, and her display of power left a lasting impression on all who witnessed it.

The girl's voice, soft and composed, filled the air. "There should be no fighting in the food hall, especially not among you weaklings. I'll let this slide for now since it's your first day."

As she spoke, her energy exuded an indomitable presence, leaving the first-year students shivering in awe. The power she possessed was palpable, leaving a lasting impression on those who witnessed it. However, a select few individuals like Ezra, Lyra, Kael, and a handful of others were less affected, having already been exposed to similar displays of strength.

The hall buzzed with discussions surrounding the second-year student's power, beauty, and remarkable abilities. While some second-year students smirked or dismissed the incident, the majority remained uninterested. They were accustomed to such displays and had already forged their own paths.

With their lunch finished, Kael, Lyra, and Isabella, set out together towards the first-year's school hall. Their watches guided them along, ensuring they arrived with a mere five minutes to spare. They entered one of the classrooms where the chatter of their peers filled the air, finding seats among their group as they eagerly awaited the next chapter of their journey to unfold.

Meanwhile, 45 minutes earlier in the grand arena, Kane focused his energy, directing it towards the worn-out floors. As the self-healing function of the arena activated, the destroyed sections were repaired, restoring the pristine condition of the arena floor. Kane's team, including Ava Reed, Josh Hawthorne, Rita Hart, and Maya Blake, gracefully descended from the stage to join him.

Ava, with her fierce demeanor and black combat suit, couldn't resist a sarcastic remark. "Don't tell me you got beat up by those little things," she quipped, earning a hearty laugh from Josh as he approached Kane, extending a hand for a friendly shake.

Kane, unfazed by their banter, assured them, "Not at all. I took their attacks head-on without shielding or bolstering myself with synthera. It's a cool way to temper my body."

Maya, taking a seat and observing Kane, chimed in with a skeptical tone. "Whatever you say, man."

Rita said as she sat on one of the seats looking at Kane, "so what do you think about these ones". As they gathered together, Kane met his team's gaze, his expression filled with determination. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, guys. This group of first-year students is something else. I have a feeling the chosen ones are among them."

The gravity of Kane's words sank in, leaving his team momentarily breathless. The smirk on Ava's face faded, replaced by a somber realization. With renewed resolve, they rose from their seats, their hands outstretched towards one another.

"Let's do our best to ensure the safety of humanity. To the stronghold!" Rita Hart proclaimed, her voice filled with conviction.

Each team member stretched their hand forward, radiating energy as they formed a united front. "To the stronghold!" they exclaimed in unison, their resolve shining in their eyes.

With their purpose reaffirmed, Kane and his team departed the grand arena, their footsteps echoing with determination and a shared mission.
