First Spot

"Yeah, I think this looks like what I have back home," Li Ming commented with a serious expression as he examined the newly created spring pole. Although it was still rough around the edges, Elder Han had crafted a preliminary version to gain a better understanding. Given the craftsman's skill, completing the tool wouldn't pose a significant challenge.

Elder Han furrowed his eyebrows as he lifted the spring pole, noting its unique design. "Hmm... this is a peculiar tool. It won't create a massive hole, but it should penetrate deep into the ground. There is a limitation, though. If you want to go deeper, I'll need to make it longer. However, there will be a point where it becomes too long and prone to snapping."

Li Ming reassured him, fully aware of the limitations from his conversation with Eyses. "You don't have to worry about that. When it reaches a certain depth, I have another tool to take over. But for now, this length is sufficient. I'll also need the longer version."

Accepting the commission, Elder Han replied, "Very well. I'll complete this smaller version today and the longer one in two days."

Li Ming had a question regarding the tool's durability. "I hope you don't find my question offensive; it's not that I'm doubting your skills. How many times do you think this tool can be used before it breaks?"

Elder Han's frown faded as he realized Li Ming's genuine inquiry. "I'm not entirely certain myself, as this is the first time I've crafted such a tool. Based on my experience, I would estimate four to five uses."

Li Ming contemplated the cost implications but quickly realized the Li Clan would cover the expenses for now. Additionally, he understood that with each creation, the quality of the spring pole would improve. So, he set aside his worries for the time being.

The door creaked open, and the curious clerk peered into the room, observing their conversation. Excited to share the news, he announced, "Miss Li is here."

Elder Han nodded, gesturing to Li Ming to follow him outside. Before leaving, he offered some advice, patting Li Ming's shoulder, "It seems you're working closely with that little Xuan. She's incredibly capable, so do your best."

Perceiving the familiar tone in Elder Han's words, Li Ming deduced the relationship between the craftsman and Li Xuan. It went beyond a simple relationship between a blacksmith and a young miss.

"I understand," Li Ming replied with a smile. Having spent time with Li Xuan, he had a sense of her remarkable knowledge and abilities that exceeded his initial expectations.

As they stepped out of the shop, they found Li Xuan waiting at the entrance, her hands gracefully clasped together.

"Elder Han," Li Xuan greeted him politely.

Elder Han informed her of the progress, saying, "I've finished the rough version and will complete it today. However, if you plan to use it, it's better to start tomorrow."

Understanding the situation, Li Xuan thanked him for his hard work. She glanced at Li Ming, curious about his thoughts, considering she had gathered a small team to assist them.

Li Ming pondered for a moment before suggesting, "How about we inspect the spots where you previously found oil? For now, we just need to collect some samples, so shovels will suffice."

Li Xuan's eyes sparkled with delight, realizing her efforts were not in vain. Elder Han chuckled and pointed to the shelves, offering a solution. "In that case, you can borrow mine for now. There are only five, though."

Grateful for the offer, Li Xuan made a big smile, expressing her gratitude to Elder Han.

Li Ming observed their interaction and deduced their relationship. They seemed to share a bond akin to that of an uncle and niece, though not related by blood.

Li Xuan had assembled a group of ten people, three of whom carried swords while the others were without weapons. She handed out the shovels and assigned two individuals to manage their equipment.

Li Ming and Li Xuan set off, heading towards the location where oil had been previously discovered. The spot lay outside the city, a small hill a few hundred meters away.

Upon reaching the foot of the hill, Li Xuan suggested leaving the carriage behind, as they were not far from the intended location. Instead of ascending the hill directly, they veered to the left, navigating through trees and fallen branches.

Li Xuan provided an explanation as they walked. "In this area, there used to be a spot where oil would naturally seep to the surface. It provided oil to the city for nearly a decade. It's not far from the city, making it an ideal starting point."

Li Ming absorbed her words, their three guards positioned strategically, with one leading the way and two following behind for protection.

"I see. Have you ever dug into the ground here?" Li Ming inquired.

Li Xuan revealed their previous approach. "No, we didn't. Since the oil naturally emerged from the ground, we assumed that once it stopped flowing, there was no more oil. It was like a small puddle drying up. Would you dig a lake when it dries up?"

Li Ming shook his head, indicating his understanding.

"Exactly. So, we never took any action, believing it was a blessing from the earth," Li Xuan explained.

Li Ming nodded in comprehension, his gaze shifting towards the towering hill. "Nevertheless, a hill, huh?"

Concerned by his tone, Li Xuan questioned, "Is there a problem?" Worries about their partnership loomed in her mind.

Quick to clarify, Li Ming dispelled any concerns. "Not at all. In fact, this is an excellent location. I was actually wondering if there is a substantial rock formation—a wall that protrudes from the ground and is visible."

Perplexed, Li Xuan glanced back at their seven workers, individuals who often moved about the city and its surroundings, undertaking various tasks. Perhaps they had encountered something of note.

One of the workers raised his hand and spoke up, "Young Miss, I actually came across something like that in this hill. However, to see it, we would need to climb a bit."

"Is that one looking like it was being painted in layer?" Li Ming asked.

"Y-yes. There were a few different colors."

Li Ming smiled, pleased with the unexpected discovery. "That's excellent."

Li Xuan considered the situation and offered a reward to the worker. "If it turns out to be useful, you will receive an additional reward from the Worker House."

Grateful for the opportunity, the worker expressed his gratitude, albeit somewhat nervously.

Li Ming's gaze shifted, catching sight of a small clearing in the midst of the woods. "Hmm? Could that be the spot?"
