TIMOFEY

The sheets are still tangled from last night. It's strange to think the two of us were just here less than twelve hours ago. Especially because this time feels so much different.

Everything has changed.

Piper picks up on the strangeness, too. When I lay her on the bed, she stretches a hand out over the mattress. "No one made the bed."

"I don't like maids in my space."

She smiles and her nose wrinkles. "You have maids at your house."

I lay down next to her and scoop her closer to me. "Yeah, but I trust those maids."

She places her palm on my chest and spreads her fingers wide. Her eyes are fixed there, like she's studying the size of it compared to me. "It's hard to earn your trust."

"And easy to lose."

Green eyes flick up to my face. "I'm sorry. I… I shouldn't have left that day. After I found out about my dad and the money, I mean. I should have—"
