"Hey Milotic. I don't want you to feel pressured into becoming anything more than you already are... but do you want to try if you can mega evolve with the mega stone Golurk found?"
Still inside the hot spring with just his pokemon, Pete broke out of his minute long musing and turned to his relaxing Milotic. The pokemon lifted her head once more and regarded her trainer with a serious gaze. Pondering over whether or not she was deserving of this opportunity, she eventually nodded with a determined glint in her eyes.
"Alright, let me get the stone real quick!" Pete shouted after gently placing down the Eevee egg on the boulder in the middle of the pool and running into the house, upstairs to his lab where the mega stone was lying and back down with it to the pool. His half-naked, wet self confused Courtney and Valerie, who were currently watching TV, and they curiously followed behind Pete to see what was going on.
In preparation for a possible mega evolution, Pete placed down a camera on a tripod from his bag, took out another handheld item from it, and jumped back into the pool with the mega stone in hand.
He was about to hand over the stone but then saw the Eevee egg still in the middle of the pool. Afraid the mega evolution would somehow disturb it, he hurriedly ran over, grabbed it and placed it down near the Sylveon who was curiously watching everything from her shallow bank inside the spring that smaller quadruped pokemon could relax in without having to swim.
"Sorry, girl. Almost put your egg at risk. Mega evolutions aren't violent or anything, but who knows how big she gets. Don't want a giant displaced wave to knock the egg away," Pete said to Sylveon, who looked more amused than anything before he hurried back over to Milotic, who looked equally amused.
In nothing but swimming trunks, the water pendant Suicune gifted him and his intricate keystone bracelet on he had made as an identical pair for Jasmine and him, Pete finally handed over to Milotic who first regarded the stone and then gently bit down on it with her small mouth.
The reaction was immediate. Pete's bond with Milotic was forcefully, but not painfully opened up to its maximum capacity and slowly began growing. The keystone and mega stone started glowing in water blue typing and purple ghost typing energy, but slowly, the water blue typing outshone the purple light. The purple hue itself slowly started turning into a soft pale pink for the mega stone and a strong pink for the keystone.
Milotic herself was glowing in the typical light of a traditional evolution, and her body started growing longer, stopping narrowly at almost twice as long as before at a little over 10 meters. Her 'ear fins' joined together, forming a sort of cape behind her head and 'upper body' while her antennae grew out to twice their previous length, curling up slightly more.
Then, since he couldn't see what else it could be because of the blinding light of the mega evolution, pointy scales started growing at the ends of this 'fin cape' and on top of her head. The fan at the end of her tail grew out two more extra long scales for a total of six and divided into two pairs of three, still joined at the 'base of the fan'.
When the light receded, Pete saw that Mega Milotic now had beautiful light blue eyes instead of red. Her fin cape retained its beautiful red color from the ear fins, and the 'upper body' remained its creamy light beige color. The scales on top of her head as well as those six of the tail fan were a beautiful, shining prismatic mix of pink, white and sky blue while the patterns of her tail in aqua blue, red scales and obsidian black lines grew over the extra length it gained in the mega evolution.
The inside of the cape was a shining white while her antannae gained two more colors from the original coral red she had before for the antannae and ear fins.
But the beauty of the mega evolution wasn't what truly astonished Pete at the end of the mega evolution. No, he gained a fifth affinity with it. An affinity that was rapidly growing as if a dam had burst, slowly catching up to his grass, ground, psychic, and water affinities.
"Huh, guess that answers the question what typings you would have after mega evolution," Pete mumbled under his breath after he tore his eyes away from Mega Milotic's beautiful prismatic scales and looked to his hand where a soothing pale pink light formed at his fingertips.
Suddenly, the water behind Pete turned extremely cold. As he turned back, Pete saw Sylveon using Ice Beam to form a walkway from her position to Pete's and she swiftly ran across it to land on his back, pressing her head against his cheek from behind him and wrapping her ribbons around him in a hug.
Shivering a little due to the sudden cold but breaking out of his stupor, Pete noticed that his bond not just with the Sylveon next to him, but all his fairy pokemon changed dramatically. The effect of his usual bonds with pokemon, whose typings he had an affinity to, kicked in the second he had unlocked his fairy affinity, in turn strengthening all his fairy pokemon. And since they were fast to form bonds to trainers they judged were good people, over fifty of the roughly hundred pokemon he had active bonds to were fairy pokemon that were currently receiving a small boost of power depending on how close they were to Pete.
Courtney and Valerie, who watched all this happening, were mesmerized. First by the beautiful Mega Milotic looking at Pete with gentleness and respect, and second by the fact that Pete, who only saw his fingertips emitting pink fairy typing energy, was actually bathed in the typing energy from head to toe. Well, they assumed it went to his toes, but he was actually up to his waist inside the water.
"Don't take this the wrong way Courtney, but best husband material ever," Valerie mumbled while completely enchanted by Pete's appearance and the two fairy pokemon she could feel growing stronger from where she stood.
"Wasn't aiming to be your husband anyway," Courtney wittily answered, not looking away from the three in the pool either. Valerie simply giggled but took out her phone to immortalize this moment with a picture, not caring that Pete would likely hand over both recordings he had on if only she asked.
"Hey, Pete! You should come watch the Comfee Fields! It looks like the fairy pokemon are all using Misty Terrain at the same time," Jasmine shouted as she ran over to the hot spring.
"Oh wow," she mumbled as she watched the spectacle of her boyfriend glowing in pink energies in front of a giant, super pretty Milotic.
Three minutes later, the process of Pete's growing fairy affinity stopped together with the pink hue surrounding him. He looked up to Milotic, who moved over and gently wrapped herself around him twice in a hug.
"Woah, look how beautiful you've gotten! How do you feel?" Pete asked as he gently touched the gorgeous scales of his new mega pokemon. And it looked like surprises didn't end there because instead of a feeling or picture, Pete heard a voice over their bond instead.
'I'm fine, better than fine even. Thank you for granting me this opportunity,' a fairy-like voice whispered in his mind.
"Holy Arceus! You can talk now? How come I've never heard that the other mega evolutions can do that? Jasmine never said anything about Mega Torterra doing that!"
'My best guess is our deep bond and that strong psychic affinity of yours. It felt like it bled through that stone on your wrist during the evolution,' Mega Milotic answered to Pete's originally rhethoric question.
"And you're super smart, too? This is such a blessing!"
'I agree,' Milotic answered over their bond with a tinkling giggle.
"I should call Steven! There's no way he can't talk to his Metagross, an absolute psychic powerhouse, if you can do it thanks to my psychic affinity!"
"Pete? What's happening?"
Pete broke out of the conversation with Milotic and looked to Jasmine. He immediately answered like a happy kid on christmas, "She can talk! The mega evolution made it so she can talk over our bond!"
All three women looked at Pete with mouths hanging open, unable to answer his ridiculous statement. Actually talking, even over bonds and thoughts, was the stuff of mythical and legendary pokemon.
"Amazing," Valerie whispered with shining eyes. Talking to a pokemon, word to word, was among her most dearly held wishes. Whatever Pete did, Valerie hoped he found out fast so she could recreate this miracle.
Courtney simply shook her head. Once more, the young man who rescued her from silent mediocrity and mounting self-pity out of nowhere did something ridiculous.
Nevermind the giant farm he single-handedly stomped out of the ground from nothing or those new mutated berries he created that had secondary beneficial effects compared to their original counterparts with this grafting technique that Isabelle, the twin's mother, told her Pete 'invented from nothing' when he first visited their home.
Jasmine, on the other hand, was on the verge of pouting. A feeling she didn't like at all. Yet, she wasn't sure how to feel because while she loved her Mega Torterra unconditionally, she was quite envious of Pete's feat. At the same time, she was simply happy for him. Pete put enough work into everything he does that it was stupid and childish to be jealous or, Mew forbid, mad at him for this apparently unprecedented development.
If he could do it with Milotic, Pete was sure to recreate the same miracle with Reuniclus if her species had a mega evolution and he found the appropriate stone. And if he can do it once, maybe even twice, there's no way he won't find out the secret behind it.
"If there's a 'how', Pete will find it," Jasmine whispered, silent enough that nobody heard her as she looked to her boyfriend with a smile filled with love.
