Benjamin was lost in thought inside the car when suddenly the vehicle shook violently. His body collided with the door, and since being stabbed in the chest with a dagger, his body had become as fragile as a human's. Just from that impact, he felt like the wound in his chest was about to tear open again.
"Are you trying to kill me?" Benjamin emerged from the car, clutching his aching chest. He intended to tease Emily, but when he saw her angry expression and the traces of tears on her face, his expression became serious.
"What's wrong?" Benjamin's tone grew grave, and in that moment, Emily's demeanor tugged at his heartstrings.
Emily looked at Benjamin again, seeing him clutching his chest. Although he usually had a pale complexion, now it seemed to possess a sickly quality. A sense of desolation overwhelmed her, as if a bald eagle were feasting on her heart, the flesh already rotten.
"Benjamin, am I a harbinger of disaster?" Emily's eyes turned sorrowful, and Benjamin felt a pang of surprise.
"Fool! How can you say that?" Benjamin smiled, hoping to uplift her with his own smile, but he realized it was a futile dream.
"Whether it's you, Olivia, Sophia, or even Boris, all of you have encountered misfortune because of me. You're severely injured, Olivia is on the brink of death, Sophia is disfigured by fire, and Boris..." Emily couldn't continue speaking, her voice choked with tears.
Although Boris had done many things that angered her, she could sense that he harbored no ill intentions. But in the end, Boris died because of her. It seemed that everyone around her suffered unexpected calamities just by getting closer to her.
Sophia said she was a devil, but which kind of devil was she exactly? Was she the kind that brought misfortune to others? Why did it have to be this way? All the people she cared about were the ones getting hurt!
"Emily, remember, you are one of a kind!" Benjamin said solemnly. It seemed as if he had lived for over two hundred years and couldn't remember having such a sentimental moment. But this time, seeing the pained expression on Emily's face hurt him. It felt as if the heart that hadn't pulsated for two hundred years had started to flow with blood, beating like that of a human...
The moon shone brightly, its cold light mercilessly revealing the wounds in Emily's heart, exposing her grief and pain without mercy. But now was not the time for sadness. Emily tightly clenched her fist, her gaze gradually turning dark and cold. Alexander, one day, I will make you pay!
"Let's go!" Emily gathered herself, sweeping away the vulnerability from moments ago, replaced by a firm resolve supported by her beliefs.
The two of them locked eyes, nodding resolutely as the car headed towards the direction of the castle.
The closer they got to the castle, the more Emily felt that something was amiss. In the past, when approaching this place, she could smell the distinct floral fragrance of the vampires from afar. However, this time, even though they were close to the castle, the air carried only the scent of soil and grass, with a hint of sweetness tainted by decay.
When their car stopped in front of the castle, it was desolate. In just over a month, it had become empty. The flower beds in front of the castle, once meticulously cared for, had fallen into ruin. The flowers hadn't blossomed despite the warmth of summer and the nourishment of rainwater. Instead, they had withered and decayed, some even rotting away, with weeds sprouting amidst the soil.
"How did this happen?" Emily looked at everything before her, feeling incredulous.
"These flowers are different from the ones in the human world. They may look the same, but they have been nourished with fresh blood," Benjamin thought Emily was referring to the flowers.
"I meant, where are the people?" Emily's hatred had eroded part of her sanity. The vast power disparity had hindered her vengeance, but she couldn't wait to find Alexander and tear him apart.
"Let's change locations. Perhaps your escape and my betrayal made Alexander feel this place is no longer safe. He has always been a cautious person," Benjamin explained.
Unbeknownst to them, ever since the wildfire at Miaoshan, Alexander had been closely watched by Yuri. To escape Yuri's relentless pursuit, he had changed hideouts multiple times within a month.
"Now what? Where do we go to find him? I can't smell his scent!" Emily grew impatient. With her keen sense of smell, she could usually track down Alexander by following his scent left on the soil or weeds along the way. But now, it seemed as if he had vanished into thin air. His scent couldn't be detected, not even by vampires of the caliber of Bluebell.
"If he's really putting effort into hiding, you might not be able to detect him. Vampires possess many secrets you don't know about, even I don't know them. Those are secrets that only the clan leaders from generations past have the qualifications to know," Benjamin reassured her. "There are still six days until the Crimson Moon Festival, so don't worry too much for now."
"Do you know where the ritual will take place?" Emily suddenly asked, leaving Benjamin at a loss.
"The Crimson Moon Festival only occurs once every thousand years. I've only lived for a little over two hundred years, and I happened to be alive during this festival. But the last one happened before I was even born, so how would I know where it takes place?" Benjamin forced a bitter smile. The Crimson Moon Festival was a grand celebration coveted by all vampires. On that day, the pristine moon would turn blood-red, and vampire abilities would undergo a qualitative leap. However, how many vampires could live for over a thousand years and witness the Crimson Moon? Those who could were truly fortunate.
Emily suddenly regretted scaring Yuri away. At the very least, she should have obtained a way to contact him. That guy who looked so "mature and dignified" always carried the scent of blood roses, and he might have provided some clues. Despite her anger at him for creating illusions that led to Sophia's unfortunate fate, at least she wouldn't be stuck here in the desolate castle, feeling anxious.
"I'm guessing you missed me, am I right?" a mocking voice sounded from behind the two. Emily turned her head abruptly, almost in surprise. But Yuri's devilish expression, the curve of his lips, the broken starlight reflected in his green eyes, and his lazy and indifferent demeanor gave her an urge to smash his handsome face.
"You're delusional!" Benjamin glared at him fiercely, uttering those words through gritted teeth.
"Whether I'm delusional or not, little Emily has the right to speak!" Yuri spoke while already standing in front of Emily, his body pressing close to hers. He smiled even more mysteriously, the curve of his lips possessing a captivating power.
Emily felt a momentary dizziness. Although it wasn't the first time she had seen his unparalleled face, this time she was still moved by his stunning appearance. But she quickly pushed him away. "I need information!"
