This was the most peaceful sleep Yuri had ever had in his life. He rarely slept at night because it was always fraught with danger. At night, you never knew which corner held a pair of eyes watching you, seeing you as prey. A momentary lapse of vigilance and you could be drained dry.
The Leveno clan preferred solitude. Yuri had lost sight of his parents at a very young age. It seemed like they had come together solely for the purpose of procreation, to prevent the decline of the Leveno bloodline. They raised him for a few years and then disappeared without a trace. After six thousand years, he couldn't even remember what his parents looked like, and their names had become hazy in his mind.
However, Yuri didn't feel abandoned. Enjoying solitude seemed to be their nature. He just couldn't understand the human emotions of maternal and paternal love, despite secretly observing for six thousand years.
Yuri's sleep was always in a half-awake, half-asleep state, ready to respond to any sudden situation. But today, holding Emily's hand, Yuri slept deeply, so deeply that even when his stomach hurt, he thought it was just a dream.
A person who could weave dreams never dreamt. Yet this time, Yuri had a dream. He dreamt of standing on a hill with Emily, with the hill they stood on as the center. Several other small hills surrounded them, all belonging to them. The grass was lush, and petals were falling everywhere. One hill had fruit trees, another had wheat fields, another had roses, and one hill had vegetables...
In the middle of all the hills was a small wooden house in a clearing. The house was surrounded by various flowers, and a little farther away were many pets.
A large group of children revolved around them, filled with laughter and joy. They smiled at each other.
The dream was beautiful, but when Yuri woke up, he felt infinite desolation because this dream would never come true. Vampires and humans could never have children together.
When Yuri opened his eyes, Emily lay beside him, eyes closed, seemingly in deep sleep. But as soon as he moved a little, Emily immediately opened her eyes, alert and watchful. In this escape without gunshots but filled with bloodshed, everyone was on high alert. A regular campus student had become as vigilant as an assassin.
After the cautious gaze met Yuri's, Emily's expression softened, and a faint self-deprecating smile appeared on her lips. The tension in her body relaxed.
"Are you feeling better?" Emily asked, her voice gentle and soft.
"Emily..." Yuri's expression turned serious. "I need blood." It was embarrassing for Yuri to ask a woman for help, especially to ask a woman of her own kind. It was not only embarrassing but also cruel. However, he had no choice. He needed to recover as soon as possible.
"Okay!" Emily replied resolutely, surprising Yuri.
"You..." Yuri looked at Emily in disbelief as she got up, put on her shoes, and swiftly prepared herself, as if she had no hesitation or difficulties.
"I'm used to it. I used to hunt for Benjamin too," Emily replied calmly.
A pang of sourness welled up in Yuri's heart, but he was too weak now to feel jealous. He could only advise her, "Be careful and stay safe."
Emily smiled and said, "It's daytime now, in the middle of the afternoon. Don't worry!"
Yuri glanced at the wall clock, nodded, and gave a relieved smile.
"Don't sleep too deeply. It's not entirely safe," Emily cautioned before leaving, still concerned.
Yuri's heart immediately bloomed with joy, and he displayed his happiness on his face. He nodded vigorously as he watched Emily, who smiled back at him before leaving.
After Emily left, Yuri lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The childish expression from earlier had completely vanished from his face, replaced by a somber and cold demeanor. His mind raced like a computer motherboard, but even in this situation, he still found himself at a loss.
He couldn't keep relying on Emily like this. She wouldn't give up on rescuing people, and even if he dragged it out until the day of the Crimson Moon Festival, Emily would undoubtedly go all out to massacre Lesombres. Even if he didn't survive in the end, at least she wouldn't feel regret, and she wouldn't spend the rest of her life in guilt.
But if he made a move too soon, Alexander would undoubtedly be highly vigilant. He might have already set up a trap, waiting for Emily to fall into it.
His stomach continued to twist in pain, affecting his thinking. Yuri rubbed his temples, feeling helpless. Just then, he heard laughter outside, the laughter of humans, four of them. He had been deep in thought and hadn't noticed that the four humans had come so close to the villa.
Yuri swallowed, his dry throat sending a bloodthirsty signal. He felt his throat spasming, having gone a whole day and night without feeding, and coupled with the twisting pain in his abdomen, he longed for blood even more. He even felt that he could drain each of the four humans dry, leaving not a drop.
Yuri gritted his teeth and stood up, taking a risk by venturing out of the basement. Thankfully, Emily had closed all the curtains before leaving. The room was pitch-black, with specially made blackout curtains layered with cotton curtains. Only a few meters of sunlight seeped in through the gap between the two curtains.
Wherever the sunlight touched, particles of dust floated in the air, and the slight sunlight in the room made it feel exceptionally quiet.
Yuri listened to the sounds outside. It seemed that two couples had come out for an outing. He could hear the sound of bicycle wheels rolling on the grass, the playful voices of girls, the sounds of flirting and teasing, and the aroma of human food.
Yuri swallowed again, a strange feeling surging within him. For some reason, he found himself unwilling to harm them because among all the sounds, Yuri sensed the taste of love. It was warm, as if melting his icy heart. Unconsciously, he thought of Emily.
Yuri tried to endure it, reassuring himself that she would bring back food; it would just be a little later. He slowly made his way towards the basement, convincing himself.
However, the voices of the four people grew closer. Yuri's ears were sensitive, allowing him to hear their voices even before they could see the villa. Now, he was certain that they had discovered the villa.
Yuri stood in the middle of the stairs between the basement and the ground floor, feeling torn. He didn't want to harm them, to ruin that beautiful feeling, but he couldn't resist his instinctual bloodlust. He took a step up, then retreated, then took another step up, only to retreat again.
"There's a house over there!" a clear female voice rang out.
"The curtains are drawn, it seems like no one is inside!" another female voice exclaimed.
"Let's take a chance!" a male voice, filled with hidden excitement.
"Let's go, let's go!" another male voice, filled with enthusiasm.
"Wait, isn't this like becoming thieves?" the clear female voice hesitated.
Yuri felt his throat becoming even drier, and a voice in his mind shouted, "Come closer, come closer..."
