The Presentation

The next day, Espresso and Mochaccino couldn't be more excited to announce their success. "Hey, Espresso Cookie! Hey, Mochaccino Cookie! I see you both got some sleep! How are the Magic Candies going?" Gingerbrave greeted, seeing the two.

"We believe our goal has been achieved, creating a candy that is capable of retaining the power of Soul Jam. Now, all that is left is to present it before the Elders with surface-level explanations." Espresso smirked, excited for the demonstration.

"Let us go, then. We don't want to keep them waiting." Mochaccino suggested, leading the other cookies away.

"Yes, we mustn't dawdle. The sooner we show our discovery, the sooner we can make more." Espresso nodded, agreeing as he followed behind.

They two scientists, accompanied by Gingerbrave, made their way to Mansion Custard, where Clotted Cream's office was. They gave a brief breakdown of the experiment, and were granted the chance to demonstrate the process.

"Is this true? Are you certain? You've succeeded in creating a candy capable of storing the power of Soul Jam?" Clotted Cream asked, wanting confirmation.

"Yes. The energy in Soul Jam has been transferred into a receptacle of compressed sugar, finished with a few drops of espresso. It is to noted, however, that espresso is not the key ingredient for its stability. We will explain once we are granted the Elders' audience." Espresso nodded.

"Mochaccino Cookie! We heard the news! Is it true?!" Crunchy Chip asked as he also entered the room beside Wildberry.

"Are the three Soul Jam unharmed and intact?" Wildberry asked, curious about the results.

"Yes. They are in perfect condition, not a single crack or blemish. By the way, the experiment only extracted the smallest sliver of energy. The Soul Jam are essentially identical to before with no change in aroma or composition." Mochaccino reported, reassuring the two.

"What will you be calling this new invention?" Clotted Cream inquired, intrigued.

"Mochaccino Cookie and I have settled on the name 'Magic Candy.' The outer layers are essentially the same as ordinary candy. But contained within is the power of the Ancient Heroes themselves, magic that cannot be matched." Espresso answered, showing the creation.

"It's simple and sweet!" Gingerbrave remarked, impressed.

"Ha ha, I concur. The Magic Candy must be presented to the Elders at once! Achieving success in such a short window of time is no small feat. You both have performed nothing less than a miracle, Espresso Cookie and Mochaccino Cookie." Clotted Cream nodded, amazed by the two's abilities. "Your miracle shall be the greatest gift for all Cookies. This may well indeed signal a new era for our Republic."

"But, before we do, Mochaccino Cookie..." Espresso turned to the scientist. "Are you alright with presenting yourself before all Elders? The last thing I want is to hear the nagging voice of one of them, criticizing you for what happened regarding the masked Cookies. I can present this to them myself."

"You are too kind, my friend, but you need not worry. I am fully prepared to present this to them, no matter what." Mochaccino smiled, appreciating the gesture. "Let us get moving, and take the first step toward a new world."

"Hm, I should've known your enthusiasm wouldn't be hindered by any doubts. Very well, then. Let us go." Espresso smiled, leading the group out.

Everyone headed to the Convocation Chamber, where the Elders awaited. "Venerable Elders! I hereby present to you... The fruition of Espresso Cookie and Mochaccino Cookie's research, a new revolutionary candy never seen before in the history of Earthbread! We call it... Magic Candy!" Clotted Cream announced, gesturing to the two.

"Fascinating! The legendary power of the Ancient Heroes is contained within that small and common piece of candy?" Custard marveled, intrigued.

"How is this possible?!" Vanilla Sugar questioned, equally as baffled and impressed.

"Typical, everyday candies were not able to serve as receptacles for such energy. They shattered immediately upon every attempt to transfer even a fraction of power. By using a certain ingredient as a stabilizing agent, the receptacle was able to safely harness the energy of Soul Jam." Espresso explained, showing the process.

"I wish to witness this Magic Candy's power with my own eyes. Is it possible to see a demonstration?" Oyster requested, wanting to know how powerful it could be.

"Espresso Cookie? A demonstration, if you please." Clotted Cream requested, turning to the professor.

Without a word, Espresso presented the candy for all to see, proudly so, as its power was felt all over the room. The scent, the appearance, everything was felt from the candy. The power was immense.

"Such power...! Marvelous! It's as if the entire Lyceum is emanating deep, rich coffee from its very core!" Mulled Juice remarked, astonished.

"The frothy crema is dazzling, akin to a masterpiece of art!" Sablé praised, enamored by the sight.

"The aroma of coffee lingers in the air, still strong and pervasive... I never knew magic could be cast with such properties." Baumkuchen stated, surprised.

"Our primary goal was to share the power of Soul Jam with others in need. How fares your progress on that front?" Vanilla Sugar asked, wondering how well it worked.

"Now that Espresso Cookie and Mochaccino Cookie have discovered the recipe for Magic Candy, it will not be long before we can replicate the process and create more." Clotted Cream reassured, glad to see the two's progress. "However, Espresso Cookie has informed there is a catch, as well."

"Indeed, there is. I alone did not create the Magic Candy. I collaborated with Mochaccino Cookie during the entire process. And what he discovered is undoubtedly the most important part of this endeavor." Espresso revealed, bringing attention to his friend. "A very crucial factor to the success of Magic Candy, an 'x' factor, if you will. Mochaccino Cookie, if you would."

"Thank you, Espresso Cookie." Mochaccino nodded, beginning his own explanation. "As Espresso Cookie mentioned, the Magic Candy contains a critical element in its recipe. This Magic Candy he holds is compatible with only him, as this one's 'x' factor was espresso, the essence of himself."

"Does that imply what I think it implies?" Mulled Juice questioned, starting to get an idea of what was going on.

"Yes, Elder Mulled Juice Cookie. In order for a Magic Candy's power to be harnessed, it must connect with the soul of the one who creates it. For that, the essence of a Cookie must be infused with a blank receptacle." Mochaccino confirmed, continuing. "Otherwise, the Magic Candy will reject the wielder. It is vital that the appropriate x factor is used. Anyone can have their own Magic Candy, but what is used as a nexus will differ from Espresso Cookie's own."

"Hmph, impressive that it was not a scientist from our Republic that achieved such a discovery, but a mere outsider." Custard scoffed, annoyed by the fact Mochaccino was the one to find out that factor, which made Espresso's eyes narrow in irritation. "Regardless, these so-called Magic Candies will become the Crème Republic's greatest asset. Our city will soon become the force that will decide the fate of all Earthbread!"

"Before we celebrate this newfound discovery, there is still one matter of concern to address." Oyster suddenly stated, getting the others' attention. "The ones who attempted to steal the Soul Jam: the Cookies in white masks. Is it possible that these sinister figures have infiltrated our Republic much deeper than we realize? Perhaps even receiving aid from our very Convocation."

"Why are you bringing this up at such an occasion?!" Canelé questioned, annoyed at the sudden topic change.

"Are you genuinely suspecting the Convocation of Elders of such a foul plot?!" Vanilla Sugar growled, outraged at the accusation.

"Ruling yourself out of such suspicion warrants suspicion itself! Hmph! Are YOU not an Elder of the Convocation as well?" Sablé pointed out, a bit peeved.

"Esteemed colleagues! My friends! Such arguments are beneath ourselves and the Lyceum. The Divine Light shines down upon us as we speak!" Mille-feuille reminded, trying to get everyone back on track.

"The Soul Jam will be safely secured and placed under constant supervision. Simultaneously, it is imperative that the power of Soul Jam be shared with others as quickly as possible." Clotted Cream suggested, trying to move the conversation along. "I need not remind you that our foe is Dark Enchantress Cookie, the single greatest threat to the safety of Earthbread. I propose the Convocation be adjourned today. But, as we have succeeded in creating Magic Candy, let us share a toast. Refreshments have already been prepared."

Thus, nearly everyone left, and Clotted Cream approached the scientists. "This was a great discovery, and you both have my sincere gratitude." He complimented, happy with the result. Until his expression fell a bit once he addressed Mochaccino. "...Mochaccino Cookie, I'd like to give my formal and deepest apologies for... Custard Cookie's uncalled for comment."

"Do not fret over it. It is no surprise that he'd think that, especially with how the last few days have gone." Mochaccino reassured, not bothered by it. "I'm just glad that this discovery has helped the Republic, and hopefully, the rest of Earthbread."

"That is a mentality worthy of admiration." Clotted Cream smiled, nodding. "Feel free to join in this celebration to you and Espresso Cookie's success. May the Republic see you with new eyes, Mochaccino Cookie. Eyes of respect and appreciation. Now, if you will excuse me, I have some things to tend to."

Once the Consul left, Espresso and Mochaccino went outside for some fresh air. "Mochaccino Cookie?" Espresso called, seeing his friend was in a daze. "I believe it's time I warn you of Custard Cookie. Take my word for it... he is a controlling authority that only sees value in monopolizing the power of House Custard. I can not stress this enough... Do. Not. Trust. Him. Not a single ounce of your trust should be given to him. If you ever meet him again, keep your guard up."

"Understood." Mochaccino nodded. He knew Espresso's "I mean this with the highest seriousness" tone when he heard it, and this was definitely it. "Though, I doubt we'll run into him again."

"Hopefully not. Not when he has the audacity to insinuate your work came about as a surprise. Hmph, if only he could see how far your intellect has taken you." Espresso scoffed, not hiding a single ounce of his annoyance. "I will be taking my leave toward the Institute, will you be accompanying me?"

"Hm? Oh, no, I think I will go around and see if anyone might need help with anything. I'm sure you're capable of taking things from here, my friend." Mochaccino declined, wanting to explore a bit.

"Very well. I'll see you later, Mochaccino Cookie." Espresso waved, walking away.

"Ah, just the Cookie I wanted to find!" Mulled Juice exclaimed, seeing Mochaccino. "If I may trouble you for a moment, I wish to hear more intricate details about you and Epsresso Cookie's research into the Soul Jam."

"Of course, Elder Mulled Juice Cookie. I'm happy to assist." Mochaccino complied, walking over. "I will do my best to explain, but there are some details only Espresso Cookie can answer."

"I too, wish to learn more about Magic Candies." Sablé said, approaching the two. "May I offer some sweets and tea whilst we converse?"

"It would be my pleasure. I am honored to be able to discuss such matters with esteemed individuals." Mochaccino gratefully replied, liking the idea of getting on the good side of the Elders.

Meanwhile, Crunchy Chip and Wildberry were back at the Market, simply going for a stroll. "This may be the last time we walk through this market. Our delegation's mission is complete." Wildberry stated, looking around.

"Hmm... This place almost feels like home already. And we've only been here for a few days." Crunchy Chip commented, actually a bit saddened.

"Will you miss this place?" Wildberry inquired, curious.

"Miss this place? BAH! I can't wait to be reunited with my King and train with my fellow Cream Wolves!" Crunchy Chip exclaimed, pumping his fists. "I can see it already... The snowy mountains, the perpetual blizzard, the cold winds singing through the valleys! Being stuck here is making me... SWEET! And it doesn't feel right!"

"Hmm." Wildberry hummed, seeing something that caught his eye.

"HEY! Ya even listenin' to me?" Crunchy Chip asked, feeling as if he was ignored.

"Look there." Wildberry pointed, seeing a strange sight.

Attention! Over here folks!

"Now's your chance to climb atop Sun's Watch, the tallest spire in the Lower City! Up there, you can see mud flats after... er... more mud flats! As far as the eye can see!" A merchant offered, turning to Crunchy Chip and Wildberry. "Oi! You two! Yeah, you lot! The tall one and the small one! You seem like the traveling and sightseeing sort! I'll knock off a few Coins just for you! Wuddya say?"

"Two tickets, please." Wildberry said, buying the tickets.

"HA HA! Thanks a bunch! And here's your tick... huh?" The merchant paused, spotting the Cream Wolf. "Hey er... This tower's off limits to animals. And that beast next to you is definitely an animal..."

"Beast?! Animal?! This is my best friend, my comrade in arms!" Crunchy Chip defended, a bit offended by the statement.

"Those are some sharp-lookin' fangs though... Tell you what, you can leave him tied up here, safe and sound!" The merchant proposed, trying to compromise.

"Say that again to my FACE! I'll tie YOU up!" Crunchy Chip threatened, enraged.

"Leave it. Let us seek nourishment instead." Wildberry advised, grabbing Crunchy Chip's arm before he did something rash.

"Why I oughta...! Huh? HEY! I thought you wanted to get a look up on that tower?" Crunchy Chip pointed out, wondering why they were leaving.

"I am not the greatest fan of heights to begin with." Wildberry admitted, simply leading them both elsewhere.

Next, in Sablé Manor, the three sat, conversing as planned. "Thus, by harnessing the power of the lighting of storms, I managed to create what is known as the Lighting Rod Towers." Mochaccino concluded, ending his story.

"What an extraordinary tale. A truly impressive feat of ingenuity, indeed. I knew I made a right judgment in vouching for your rash actions to be pardoned." Mulled Juice complimented, quite intrigued. The conversation started with an inquiry about what Mochaccino knew about the Magic Candy, and ended with a discussion about his work.

"Mochaccino Cookie, a word?" Clotted Cream's voice rang out, the consul having arrived. "I have something of big importance to share with you, but we must discuss this privately."

"Very well." Mochaccino accepted, excusing himself from the two Elders. They walked out to the Fountain Piazza, and the discussion continued. "How have things been?"

"Thank you for accepting my invitation, Mochaccino Cookie. Our city fares well today, ever peaceful and quiet. Cookies smiling and greeting each other on the streets, hard at work and busy with their daily lives. Laying eyes on such sights, I still cannot believe that we are on the brink of war with Dark Enchantress Cookie and her forces." Clotted Cream replied, explaining the current situation. "I must do everything in my power to protect our Cookies... The research on Magic Candy must continue no matter what. That being said, I have a favor to ask of you, Mochaccino Cookie."

"Consul, sir. I have an official request I would like to make." Financier called out, seeing them.

"Oh? What is it, Ser Financier Cookie?" Clotted Cream asked, turning to his bodyguard.

"Pardon the interruption, Consul. But, I would like to investigate the Cookies in White Masks myself, sir." Financier explained, wanting to get involved. "Several of their posse have been detained by the City Guard, but we've no idea of where they came from or what their ultimate goal is. I wish to investigate this matter to the fullest. They must be uprooted from the source."

"Request granted. I leave the investigation of the White Masks in your very capable hands, Ser Financier Cookie. You are to proceed with uncovering their deepest secrets with my full support and blessing." Clotted Cream approved, trusting his guard to do her job.

"It shall be done, Consul." Financier bowed, heading off.

"You were about to ask?" Mochaccino reminded, curious.

"Yes, forgive me. Now, where was I..." Clotted Cream paused, recalling. "Ah, yes. I wished to ask for your aid in our efforts to replicate the Magic Candy. Rather, adapt the Magic Candies to better fit the Cookies who are fit to wield them. We must continue this research."

"But of course. I was actually about to suggest the same thing." Mochaccino agreed, glad that they were thinking along the same lines.

"I was hoping you would. With the current state of affairs, there is no way of knowing when Dark Enchantress Cookie's army will launch their attack. In order to protect the Republic, we must make the most of every passing day, every minute." Clotted Cream nodded, happy to have someone as dedicated to his cause. "I'll join you shortly at the Institute of Thaumaturgy, once I'm done handling some business here."

"I will wait for you inside the laboratory, then." Mochaccino confirmed, walking off.

Clotted Cream's "business" was at Mansion Custard, where he was less than enthusiastic to be. "Father. I have received your summons." He greeted in the most polite yet neutral tone.

"Yes... Your announcement at the Lyceum was quite extraordinary. To transfer the Soul Jam's energy into a Cookie-made receptacle! I still cannot believe it! And to think... such a feat was completed while you, a member of House Custard, are serving as Consul of the Crème Republic!" Custard boasted, disregarding the fact it was the Coffee Tribe scientists who accomplished this.

"Our family has deep roots, boy... Deep roots, dating back to the days of the Vanilla Kingdom itself. In fact, my brother once had the opportunity to serve as Premier of the Vanilla Kingdom." Custard continued, explaining. "Through political insight and prowess, I have risen up to the station of an Elder... But my ambition strives to go beyond. Our family, House Custard, will one day rise up to be the greatest of all. Not the greatest of nine, but the sole seat of power. The day has come! Now is the opportunity as we've amassed enough political clout! With a claim on the Magic Candy, our success is guaranteed!"

Were it not because of Custard having his back turned to Clotted Cream, the Consul's face of pure boredom and slight irritation would have been seen. "So tell me. What are your plans for these Magic Candies?" Custard inquired, turning to his son.

"I have no doubt in my mind that Dark Enchantress Cookie is poised to strike at a moment's notice. Though many Cookies stand against her, our odds are still dismal. Our Republic must be prepared to take a stand against the enemy." Clotted Cream explained, knowing they'd have to be prepared. "Though we have a contingent of Paladins, we may need to increase our forces with a new and more formidable army."

"A bold idea! Proceed with haste. And do not worry yourself with financial concerns. All the coins of House Custard will be at your disposal. As for numbers? Volunteers from House Custard will be ready and waiting." Custard proclaimed, approving the idea. "...And mind you, there is no path to success without sacrifice. Our family will stand behind you with every step. Stay focused and bring forth the best possible results for our House."
