Prologue

Once upon a time, there were two kingdoms that were the worst of neighbors. So vast was the discord between them that it was said only a great hero or a terrible villain might bring them together. In one kingdom lived the humans, with a vain and greedy king to rule over them. They were forever discontent, and envious of the wealth and beauty of their neighbors. For in the other kingdom, the Moors, lived every manner of strange and wonderful creatures. They needed neither a king nor queen, but trusted in one another.

In a great tree on a great cliff in the Moors lived on such spirit. You might take her for a girl, but was not just any girl. She was a fairy. Her wings were large and were of that of a bird and she had curved horns on her head. Her name was Maleficent. There was also a boy just like her. He lives in a abandoned castle and his name was Atem. He had horns and wings just like Maleficent's, but his wings were black as night. These two unique fairies are not brother and sister, but they were very close as if they were siblings. Maleficent saved Atem when he was captured by human poachers that kidnapped mystical creatures and sold them to the black market. He was beaten and he had lost his brother, Yami, and her sister, Teana. Thanks to Maleficent, he is in full health.

One day, the border guards found a human thief at the pool of jewels. Atem and Maleficent went to confront the thief. He was just a human boy named Stefan. Stefan returned the jewel and was led out of the Moors by the two young fairies. Once they were out of the Moors, Maleficent shook Stefan's hand after he promised to come back, but the moment she touched his hand, the iron ring that he was wearing burned her. Iron burns fairies of all kinds. Knowing this, Stefan tossed his ring aside so that it wouldn't hurt her anymore and left. That night,, Maleficent thought of how Stefan cast away his ring, he who has so little in the world, so that their hands might touch again, and her heart was moved. Thus did the young thief...who had hoped to steal a jewel...stole something far more precious. This was unfortunate for Atem because he also had deep feelings for Maleficent.

Stefan came to visit Atem and Maleficent weeks later, and the three became the most unlikely of friends. And for a time it seems as if, in them at least, the old hatred between men and fairies had been forgotten. As it will, Stefan and Maleficent's relationship slowly grew into something else, much to Atem's dismay. And on her 16th birthday, Stefan gave Maleficent a gift. He told her it was true love's kiss. But it was not to be.

As the years passed, Stefan's ambition pulled him away from Maleficent and Atem, and towards the temptations of the human kingdom. While Maleficent and Atem, the two strongest of the fairies, rose to become the protectors of the Moors. Sometimes, Maleficent often wandered alone and where Stefan might be, for unlike Atem, she had never understood the greed and envy of men. But she was to learn, for the human king had heard of a growing power in the Moors, and he sought to strike it down.

The king brought his army of soldiers and the dark creatures rose and stood with Atem and Maleficent to fight for the Moors. The creatures and the humans battled against each other and Atem and Maleficent fought gallantly. The human army retreated in defeat after Atem struck the king in order to protect Maleficent. The King offered the throne and his daughter to whoever kills the protectors of the Moors.

That night, Stefan went to the Moors to tell Maleficent and Atem about the King's desire of wanting them dead. They spoke of many things, and the years faded away. And Maleficent forgave Stefan for his folly and his ambition, and all was as it had been long ago. Atem also decided to forgive Stefan since Maleficent was willing to forgive him so easily. After drinking something that was given to them by Stefan, they fell into a deep sleep.

When Atem awoke in the morning, he felt an unbearable pain at his back. Atem's eyes filled with horror when he saw that his wings were burnt off, but what brought him more pain was when he saw Maleficent. She was laying lifeless on the ground and her wings were also gone. Atem crawled over to Maleficent and tried to wake her up despite the intense pain at his back. Atem's heart shattered when he saw the stab wounds on her chest and realized that the woman he loved was no longer alive. Atem cried in despair as he held Maleficent's lifeless body, and Stefan wasn't with him. The news of Maleficent's death spread throughout the Moors. All the creatures grieved over the lost of their dear friend. Atem used his magic to create a staff to help him walk. He spent his time alone in the his home of the abandoned castle, devastatingly heart broken over the lost of the woman he loved and his wings.

One day, he comes across a farmer and a dog who have captured a raven. Taking pity on the small bird, he turns the raven into a woman. After the farmer and his dog ran away in fear at the sight of the transformation, Atem approached the human bird, who introduces herself as Mana. Since Atem saved her, she offers to be his humble servant and Atem assigns Mana her first task: to find Stefan. Mana flies to the castle and witnesses Stefan being crowned king with the former King's daughter, Leila, as his queen. When she informs Atem of what she saw, Atem realized that Stefan killed Maleficent and took away his and her wings to become king, he becomes enraged at such a betrayal from his former human friend. He returns to the Moors as dark clouds loomed over the Moors, then, after roots formed a throne, Atem sits there as the new Dark Lord of the Moors.
