Chapter Fifteen: Broken Promise

Valerie scurried out of the chair in fright. Her heart kept thumping in her chest as she watched the Man advance slowly towards her. She finally recognised the other person, it was Luther.

Her eyes darted to the door and she tried to make a run for it when she heard a voice in her head "Stop! Don't move!" And she froze.

Her pupils turned lifeless and her hands went limp. She just stood there, unmoving, like a puppet.

Aiden's pupils constricted when he saw this scene and he rushed to her side "Valerie! Valerie!" He shook her vigorously but she didn't move, just stared at an empty space.

In fury, he turned to Luther "How dare you?!" Luther remained unperturbed "I'm sorry brother, but you know that for Bayne to do his magic, she needs to stay really still, she wanted to run away!" He calmly explained and Aiden gritted his teeth, his eyes, a bloodshot red.

He had specifically told Luther not to say a word, but the dumb brother of his went ahead to tell Bayne!

Now Bayne was here and using his authority as an elder brother, demanded to see Valerie and have her memories wiped. Aiden tried changing his mind, but they wouldn't budge. Bayne was particularly mad at him, for divulging their secrets to a human.

Aiden stared at them with anger in his heart. They would never understand what he was going through.

Bayne spoke up "Step aside brother, this needs to be done quick and swept under the carpet. No one else apart from us, will ever know or speak of this" but Aiden didn't move. He turned to Valerie, staring deep into her eyes that were devoid of life.

His breath shuddered and his body trembled as he thought of how she made him promise not to wipe her memories. It was like she knew, something like this would happen. He was breaking that promise! The one thing that made his pale life bright, was being taken away from him, and he could do nothing but sit and watch

"I'm-"

He gasped. He couldn't speak further and he bit his lips. His throat felt hot and clogged and he turned away from her in pains. He moved closer to his office window, staring outside

"Do it"

He softly gave Bayne the approval and the latter slowly enveloped Valerie and placed his hand on her forehead.

Both their pupils turned white as the memory extraction began. Luther watched with excitement. No matter how much he had seen Bayne do it, he still couldn't get over it.

Body manipulation was one thing, but memory control was on a whole new level!

Aiden couldn't bear to watch this painful process. He closed his eyes as the pit in his stomach grew tighter. In the darkness, he heard her faint voice "Aiden, you promised"

***********************************************

Valerie woke up with a groan and she rubbed her forehead, grimacing in pain. Her head was banging and she felt dizzy. She turned and her eyes met Aiden's worried face

"Are you okay?"

"No, I have a headache"

She whined as she got up from the bean bag in his office. She must have fallen asleep here.

But why?

She felt something wasn't right and she tried to remember what she was doing and why she fell asleep but the headache returned again with full force

"Ouch!" She winced and Aiden held her shoulders "Calm down, don't move too much. Here" he handed her some tablets of aspirin and a glass of water which she graciously accepted.

After drinking, she looked up at him in suspicion "Do you just happen to have tablets of aspirin lying around in your office?"

Aiden gave a short smile "I had a headache this morning, so I bought some" he lied through his teeth and Valerie squinted her eyes

Something wasn't right, and she couldn't place her finger on it.

Nonetheless, she had to let it go. This headache was killing her.

She stood up and picked her handbag from the ground "I'd better start going, it's really late and this headache is trying to make my brains explode from the inside, so I gotta lay down"

Aiden nodded his head "Sure, goodnight Miss Henders"

"Goodnight Mr. Donovan"

And with that, she left his office.

Aiden stared at the door with mixed feelings. One part of him wanted to call her back and scream into her ears that she had to remember everything, another part just couldn't do it.

His brothers were right.

It was too dangerous for a human to know about the extra-mundane world.

He sighed heavily and moved to the window, the rain had started drizzling, falling in light showers. His eyes moved down and trailed a certain figure running to the bus stop. Her slender frame gradually disappearing from his sight.

He gulped hard and clenched his fist as he stood there.

His eyes, carrying a certain, deep emotion in them that no one could discern...
