Chapter 21: Take Your Price

A grin stretched across Detrick’s face. “Really?” he said.

Rolling her eyes, Mildid shook her head. “Yes, really, you lout.”

Detrick didn’t need to be told twice. He spun the sword in his hand and marched right up to the dark creature that had dogged his every step for the last decade of his life.

The demon just glared at Detrick as he approached.

Staring into its hideous face, Detrick pulled the sword back and thrust the blade right into its chest.

Energy surged into Detrick at once, making him go rigid. The demon spasmed as well. Then a boom of energy blew out in all directions, sending both Mildid and Cecilia tumbling.

Detrick couldn’t move, all of his muscles locked in place. The pain was extraordinary.

A sort of dark shadow slowly crept up the blade of the sword making its way to the hilt. When the shadow reached the hilt, the red stone at the center of the cross guard burst alight, flickering with a red flame.
