Chapter 19

Ray's heart pounded with anticipation as he hurriedly caught up to Jessica Steele, the seasoned B-rank hunter. He knew that networking with experienced hunters like her could provide invaluable guidance and opportunities. With a sense of urgency, he called out to her.

"Jessica! Wait up!" Ray's voice echoed through the bustling corridor, drawing Jessica's attention. She turned around, her expression a mix of curiosity and surprise.

"Ray, what's on your mind?" Jessica asked, her eyes scanning his determined face.

"I've taken Daniel's advice to heart. I want to know what steps I should take now that I've become a hunter. How can I further develop my skills and contribute effectively?" Ray's voice was laced with eagerness as he spoke.

Jessica studied him for a moment, a thoughtful look crossing her face. "You've shown great potential, Ray. I can see your dedication and passion for this path. If you're seeking guidance, I know just the person you should meet."

Ray's eyes widened; his curiosity piqued. "Who is it?"

"His name is Barnes Jarvis," Jessica replied, her tone filled with reverence. "He's a skilled C-rank hunter with a wealth of knowledge and experience. I owe much of my own growth to him. He took me under his wing when I was just starting out."

Ray's interest deepened. "Where can I find him?"

"He frequents a small training facility on the outskirts of town," Jessica explained. "It's a place where hunters of various ranks gather to hone their skills. I can take you there if you'd like."

A surge of gratitude washed over Ray as he realized Jessica's willingness to help. "I would appreciate that, Jessica. Thank you for guiding me in the right direction."

With a nod, Jessica led the way and Ray followed closely behind.

Outside the training facility, Jessica led Ray to a yellow sportscar.

"Is this yours?" Ray asks.

"Yep this is my baby" Jessica responds as her car flashes and bleeps before she opens her door and enters. "Get in."

"Isn't this…flashy?" Ray responds as he gets in the passenger seat.

"Leave me to like what I like" Jessica rolls her eyes.

They drove through the busy streets, gradually leaving the city's centre behind. As they reached the outskirts, the surroundings grew quieter, and the air became tinged with a sense of anticipation.

Finally, they arrived at the training facility, a modest building nestled amidst a lush green landscape.

They left the car and approached.

Ray's eyes scanned the area, observing hunters of various ranks engaged in rigorous training. The sound of clashing weapons and shouts of determination filled the air.

Jessica gestured toward a figure in the distance. "There he is. Barnes Jarvis."

Ray's gaze followed Jessica's direction, and his eyes settled on a tall, seasoned hunter, exuding an aura of confidence and wisdom. Barnes Jarvis, the C-rank hunter, was engaged in a fierce sparring session with another hunter.

Approaching Barnes Jarvis, Jessica called out to him. "Barnes! I'd like you to meet someone. This is Ray. He's a newly minted hunter seeking guidance."

Barnes paused his training, his piercing gaze fixated on Ray. The room seemed to fall silent as the two hunters locked eyes. After a moment, a faint smile tugged at the corners of Barnes' lips.

"Welcome, Ray. It's good to see new blood joining our ranks," Barnes greeted, extending a hand in greeting. Ray grasped it firmly, feeling an instant connection.

"Thank you, Barnes. I've heard a lot about you from Jessica," Ray replied, his voice filled with respect.

Barnes chuckled; his eyes filled with a glimmer of nostalgia. "Ah, Jessica. She's come a long way under my guidance. I'm glad to see she's passing on the torch."

Ray leaned forward, his eagerness evident. "I'm ready to learn, to grow. What advice can you offer me?"

Barnes regarded Ray with a mixture of appraisal and kindness. "First and foremost, hone your foundational skills. Master your weapons, refine your combat techniques, and embrace a disciplined training regimen. Remember, true strength is built on a solid foundation."

Ray nodded, absorbing Barnes' words. "What else should I focus on?"

Barnes smiled knowingly. "Expand your knowledge and understanding of the supernatural. Study the different types of monsters, their weaknesses, and their habitats. Knowledge is your greatest weapon, Ray. The more you understand, the more effective you become."

"How do I do all of this?" Ray asks.

"On your way here, Jessica briefly told me a bit about you. You're quite talented to be able to be a D rank hunter on your first hunter exam. I could mentor you. If you're willing" Barnes declares as he stares deeply into Ray' eyes.

"I am willing" Ray declares.

"Good, here is my contact information" Barnes states handing over his business card. "I am washed up and only do easy dungeon raids, so if you want to improve you should find a hunter team that raid with. Do you have one?"

"I can think of one group that might take me in" Ray smiles.

"Good after every raid, consult me here and I will give you tips to help you each time."

The two with Jessica continued to speak for a while longer before Jessica brought him home.

"You live here?" Jessica asks as she eyes his tiny and grimy looking apartment.

"Leave me to like what I like" Ray responds waving before entering his home.

"Petty…" Jessica mutters pouting before speeding off.
