Within hours, the darkness would have crept over the suburbs entombing our town into an abyss of blindness. The streets light across our lane were all non-functioning and the authority had not done a thing about it as cases of crooks escalated to complete with local police.
There was nothing we could do, Shrubland street was for the poor, those who had an indigent salary and couldn't afford to live near the city but bear with the insecurity and lack of maintained infrasture.
Going out to the Mortuary at this hour spelt robbed for me, I only had a 10 dollar back and front, and the least I could afford was nothing.
I calculated my safety, determining the chances of getting past the streets and into the town's CBO without bumping into crooks, it was a fifty-fifty risk. I choose the risk, my aunt was more important than my life, and I owed her my life.
I latched the house with an extra padlock after locking it. I had to rush, time was not on my side as a dark heavy cloud covered the sun spreading a huge shadow across the suburb. I predicted a heavy rain as the wind picked -up the litter that had started floating everywhere, alongside the current that had grown strong.
My hood was on, and my speed was comparative as I battled my way through the upcoming storm. I had to get there before 5 pm! Good thing the mortgage was not in town but just on the outskirts, less than a mile away from our place, using the shortcut through the creepy alleys.
I dared and crossed the road, sprinting as I dashed for the first alley and made it through and into another as I saw the real picture of our world.
It was still daytime, and my sight was clear. I got to the last alley, after this, the road will lead me straight to the Mortuary, in less than fifteen minutes. A cry for help grabbed my attention as I turn to look at my right, my hand grabbing the knife in my pocket out of reflex. (I was not a fool to walk out without defensive arms)
To my right, just some distance away from, near one of those dustbins that were piled full of stenching maggot-eating garbage, I could make the figure of a teenage girl being bullied. I wanted to help. The girl was young, around the age of fifteen and her body was not fully matured. I'm a good observer and I could distinctively approximate her height too, let's say 4' feet or so, quite a tall slender girl. Her yell for help was damped as I saw one of the bullies dip a dirty rag in her mouth as he clapped his hand on her mouth. The poor girl had no money to offer, she was useless as her futile kicks only aided a bully to grab her leg and fix his protruding belly between her. I had to do something.
I watched, terrified as I saw the three well build bullies rip her clothes and force her hard on the wall, with a dagger on her neck. I was not going to watch this, I better leave it be, I wasn't a hero. I knew I would only get myself beaten as the girl receive her chagrin.
The harassment went on with the girl being thrown badly on the dirt as the second bully opened up his ragged trouser. I could see the other two pin the girl down as they too pulled out their wriggled crooked and curved phalluses to amuse the young girl who cried to no one's rescue. I knew no one would hear her cries under this weather and the position of the crime.
"HEY! YOU!" I shouted over the wind as the three men looked at me and decided to ignore me.
"I'm going to call the police!" I threatened as the bully on the left, the one who had a so big belly got up from his kneeling position and gave me the middle finger.
"Do it! You think the cops will be here after how long?" He made sense, I knew the cops will only arrive after a crime, they always came late with sirens on after a crime.
I stood silent, confused as they went on to pull off the miserable girl of her pants. I had to act quickly, they were ignoring me, just the way Lisa always ignored me. Do I look so weak? I had to prove that I wasn't a nobody who could do nothing.
'NCCK'
The cracking sound was loud enough as the stone I had sent flying hit the hoodlum luckily on his forehead causing a waterfall of blood to flow down his face, covering his left eye as he groaned with his hand on his forehead.
"You asked for it!" The three stood up, the girl was just so lucky I had saved her chasteness, but instead, I now faced three hoodlums.
"Get Him!" The one I had injured cried in pain as the two sprinted fast over to me. I saw the girl being tossed off the ground again as the man swore not to leave any business unfinished.
I wasn't going to flee, instead, I steered towards the two. I was scared down deep, that's why I acted at my best to protect myself. The kitchen knife was in my hand and I sent it straight into the fat guy before I got knocked over. I rolled on the ground desperately before the other man could lance his dagger inside me. I slashed my knife in the air, frantically managing to send a cut across the other guy's face. I was just being lucky.
I heard the girl scream, and I knew she was in danger. My knife slashed the air as I madly screamed too, making the bullies grow frightened of my psycho-berserk state, they backed off and I ran madly for the leader, stabbing him in the back before he could evade it. I stabbed twice then thrice, I lost count as blood gushed out and the ground flooded in thick red blood.
The girl screamed louder, frightened of me. I guess I looked more horrible than her assaulters as I snapped out of my state and gave her my hand.
The other two had fled, leaving their comrade who was now a pile of tattered remains.
"You are safe now." I forced a smile at the girl who instead backed off, away from me and ran for her dear life. It was worth my effort.
Soon the sound of sirens alerted me as the red and blue flashed across the alley, I had to run, the cops knew no hero or villain.
I had killed someone.
