Chapter 96

--- 3rd Person POV ---

Grand Internal Princess Consort Yeoheung, placed under house arrest at Changdeokgung Palace with her children and confidants for not supporting King Sunjong, was rescued by her son, King Gojong. During a tense confrontation, King Gojong faced his brother, Prince Yi Jae-myon, who nearly killed him but was thwarted by Prince Uihwa. This courageous act earned Prince Uihwa recognition for his loyalty from King Gojong. Prince Yi Jae-myon was then apprehended along with his emissaries, marking a decisive turn in the power struggle.

On that fateful day, Hanseong, the capital of Joseon, was engulfed in bloodshed, with cries of agony and terror filling the air. The deaths of King Sunjong, Heungseon Daewongun, General Masaharu Makabe, and numerous Japanese forces signaled the end of the siege of Joseon.

On June 29, 1897, King Gojong stood in the now-cleaned throne hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace and proclaimed the liberation of Joseon from the Japanese and the false King Sunjong. His proclamation also included the announcement of a military and economic alliance between Butuan and Joseon.

King Gojong also declared the establishment of a new government under his leadership, focused on overseeing the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Joseon, with substantial aid from the Butuan Empire and the Kingdom of Siam. This declaration sent shockwaves through the international community, drawing global attention to the long-overlooked Butuan Empire. Fear and vigilance gripped the leaders of many nations, while those who had established friendly relations with Butuan felt delight and confidence.

King Gojong's proclamation prompted world leaders to reconsider Joseon's status as a sovereign nation in East Asia. The support from Butuan and Siam catalyzed a wave of invitations and congratulatory messages to the leaders of Joseon, Butuan, and Siam. The sudden geopolitical shift sparked a flurry of diplomatic activity, with countries seeking to establish or strengthen ties with the emerging power bloc in Asia.

Following the fall of Joseon at the hands of King Gojong and Vice-Admiral Alexander of Siargao, on June 30, 1897, Formosa capitulated before the month ended. News of this was announced in Sooraj, sparking nationwide celebrations as the long-awaited dream of empire had finally materialized. While also subsequently celebrating the end of the war, signaling the return of the soldiers that the empire have sent to face the enemies.

With the capitulation of Formosa is also the announcement of the imprisonment of Governor-General Nogi Maresuke after the last struggle on Formosa. The deposed governor-general was then sailed to Sooraj to face trial and punishment for being a soldier of the opposing side of the war. Depression and shame where visible on the faces of the surviving soldiers of the Japanese Empire stationed in Formosa.

But when the entire world started to think that everything returns to normalcy after King Gojong retook the entire Joseon Kingdom. Another news sends further ripples to every fabric of diplomacy in the entire world.

On the 6th of July 1897, Emperor Meiji signed the Treaty of Tokyo or the treaty of unconditional surrender, with Vice-Admiral Alexander of Siargao and Defense Minister Ali Ahmadi bin Haji as representatives of the Butuan Empire, in the presence of the Japanese ministers and Imperial Butuanon Army.

With this signing, Emperor Meiji subsequently announces his nation's surrender to the forces of Vice-Admiral Alexander of Siargao, whom have arrived in Japan after defeating the forces of King Sunjong, along with Defense Minister Ali Ahmadi bi Haji tailing just a minute behind.

With Emperor Meiji's announcement of unconditional surrender, the war between Butuan and Japan came to an end. Which was anticipated by few well-informed western nation leaders after discovering the usage of the machines called earoplanes on the war and the subsequent fall of Joseon and Formosa to the forces of Butuan.

Emperor Meiji then announces that Japan will enter a new era of reconstruction and reformation under the guidance of the Butuan Empire as one of its allies. Recognizing the need for modernization and adaptation in the face of powerful foreign influences. Which confuses most western leaders as how can the emperor of Japan willingly accepted being an ally with Butuan just after its humiliating defeat. But non could answer their confusion as no one really knows what transpires behind close doors of the imperial palace of Japan.

But what really stands out the most is the sudden renunciation of divinity of Emperor Meiji.

Shockwaves were sent from every corner of the Japanese Empire as realization on what this really meant. With Emperor Meiji's renunciation of divinity, the possibility of the emperor being seen by the public as just an ordinary individual worries member of the imperial Japanese family and high-ranking officials. But these worries were unnecessary as majority of the Japanese people still views the emperor and its family as descendent of the gods, just like how Butuanons and Siamese views their monarchs after the renunciation.

With this, the Japanese Empire have also officially handed the island of Formosa to Butuan and the Joseon Kingdom back to king Gojong, much to the eerie and anger of Qing military and political officials. Japan was also forced to pay a total of $10 million to the Kingdom of Joseon and the Empire of Butuan.

Subsequently, a total of 2 thousand Butuanon soldiers where then assigned to remain in Tokyo and Kyoto to supervise the rebuilding and recovery of the Japanese Empire, under the agreement of the treaty of Tokyo. The regiment of these 2 thousand soldiers is under the leadership of Colonel Anirudh Das, whom was welcomed by Emperor Meiji himself and his family.

Although eeriness and dissatisfactions were thrown by the Japanese to the Butuanon forces stationed in Japan for the first two months, which were kind an expected. But these eeriness and dissatisfied looks were replaced with smiles and welcome after days of locals subsequent seeing the respect that these Butuanon soldiers have shown to them.

On the other hand, Major General Antonio Luna along with his brigade of 4 thousand soldiers were sent to Joseon Kingdom by Maharaja Siagu XV and Minister of Defence Ali Ahmadi bin Haji. This is in accordance with the agreement made between Butuan and Joseon in talking security and economic ties between Joseon and Butuan.

The party of Major General Luna was then welcomed with open arms by King Gojong and his ministers. While the Butuanon soldiers whom have remained in Joseon after the siege of Gyeongbokgung palace where then transported back to Sooraj. With this on, under the directive of Major General Luna, the soldiers of Butuan helped the people in rebuilding the capital, while also training few soldiers of Joseon, ensuring that they will be able to stand on their own in the near future.

On Taiwan Island, formerly Formosa, Major Raghav Patel along with a thousand Butuanon soldiers were sent to oversee the security and complete incorporation of the island to the Butuan Empire. But as a new acquired land, Taiwan became a colony first of Butuan under the military leadership of Major Raghav Patel.

Despite the capitulation of the villages and towns in the island, native islanders remain to be the thorn on the expansion of Butuanon forces. Thus, Major Patel's tasked solely revolved on capturing the resistance on the surface, but behind the woods of the island, killings became the common action made by Major Raghav Patel, cleansing the island of its native inhabitants. In the future this act of Major Raghav Patel shall be known as the 'Shower of Blood of Taiwan' killing 10 thousand natives in a span of 4 years.

Overall, the war between Butuan-Joseon (Gojong) and Japan-Joseon (Sunjong), devastated the countries of Joseon so much, to the point that its capital became unrecognizable due to severe bombing and ravenous fire. At the end, a total of 100,00 - 250,000 casualties, both civilians and military, were recorded by both sides. While almost 50% of total Japanese vessels were sunk by the forces of Butuan, Butuan Imperial Navy also suffers in losing 10-15 small and big ships. But in the future, modern historians estimated the casualties to have reach a staggering 1 million to 1.5 million individuals.

With the pace of how the war progresses, western countries became immune to this and have started to view this as normal occurrence for the next 3 months. But one thing has change, Butuan became a country that western nation paid a special attention to. Not because of their success with their war against Japan and dominating the entire region. But by having the earoplanes as their trump card, that leaves other nations in vigilance against them.

Progress and innovation are a good thing for the inventing nation but for others whom have viewed themselves to be a head of other countries, this act can be seen as unacceptable and threatening for their own national security, especially for France, Britain, and USA. Countries whom have been aiming to conquer the world and uniting it under its banner. And the earoplanes of Butuan proves to be one of the major hurdles that they will be facing in the near future.

As the world busied itself with the fear of being trampled and left behind by Butuan in military development, the East and Southeast Asian countries of Butuan, Siam, Joseon, and Japan remained unmoving and calm, prioritizing recovery after the war. Hawai'i, on the other hand, felt more secure and protected as two naval ships from Butuan had been stationed on the island in accordance with the agreement between Butuan and Hawai'i.

Queen Kaʻiulani of Hawai'i felt more relaxed and contented. Her decision to ally with Butuan and become their protectorate. Not only did she secure the independence of her country but also ensured the kingdom's security through the presence of Butuanon forces. She often walked along the shores of her island, the sight of the Butuanon ships in the distance is a constant reminder of the newfound peace and protection her people enjoyed.

For the next few weeks, the wind of the world remains clam and unchanging, a rare occurrence as the appearance of earoplanes became a huge news in Butuan, Siam, Joseon, and Japan. But despite the silence, ministers of the western world were already restless, eager to act for the betterment of their nation's security.

In the grand halls of Versailles, Berlin, and London, discussions were dominated by strategies to counter Butuan's rise. Diplomatic envoys were sent out, alliances reconsidered, and military budgets reassessed. The specter of Butuan's naval prowess loomed large over their maritime strategies.

Across the Atlantic, in the burgeoning cities of the Americas, the response was no less fervent. In Washington, political debates raged over the allocation of resources to bolster the navy. The press played on the public's fears, painting Butuan as an unstoppable force, while industrialists saw an opportunity to push for greater military contracts. The same sentiments echoed in the halls of power in Brazil and Argentina, where leaders pondered over their nations' defenses and future alliances.

Without even noticing it, an unsolicited arms race between nations have started. With fear as it fueling drive, nations that once just the observer started to make their move. The wind of the world is changing, the once peaceful time is about to end. With a single drop of blood, a flood of crimson flood will wipe the earth and machines will be the main perpetrators.

Yet, in the heart of Butuan, Emperor Siagu XV remained focused on his vision. He convened with his council of ministers and military advisors, ensuring that the empire's growth was balanced and sustainable. The naval docks in Butuan City thrummed with activity as new ships were built and older ones refitted with the latest technology. The empire's scientists and engineers were given free rein to innovate, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in military and civilian technology alike.

Back in Hawai'i, Queen Kaʻiulani received a letter from Emperor Siagu XV, reaffirming the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between their nations. The letter spoke of shared futures and the promise of peace and prosperity. It was a sentiment she cherished deeply, knowing that her people's well-being was secured through these alliances.

Along with Queen Kaʻiulani, King Rama V, King Gojong, and even the newly defeated Emperor Meiji, all received a letter from Maharaja Siagu XV. An assurance of peace and stability were promised for those who will stay on his side. Along with this assurance is an invitation to the intellects of their respective country.

A chance to study and learn the art of which engineers and scientist of Butuan Empire have employed in constructing their respective weapons. And also, cooperation in developing and further advancing the technology of the nations.

Maharaja Siagu XV understood the importance of secrecy and self-development, but Maharaja Siagu XV also knows the importance of having reliable and dependable allies that can defend themselves. Thus, Maharaja Siagu XV decided to assist Siam, Joseon, and Japan, on this venture, while also ensuring developing weapons more advance compared to others on their own.

As the world grappled with the shifting tides of power, the nations that stood firm in their alliances and priorities found a semblance of stability. While the race for military dominance continued, those who chose recovery, collaboration, and strategic partnerships laid down foundations for lasting peace and development.

The future remained uncertain, but in the quiet resolve of leaders like Queen Kaʻiulani, King Rama V, King Gojong, Emperor Meiji, and Emperor Siagu XV, there was hope for a world that could balance strength with wisdom, and power with purpose.

As the sun's about to set on the empire of Butuan, inside the palace of Sella at the office of Maharaja Siagu XV. Maharaja Siagu XV could be seen facing the window, smiling with pride, peace, and expectancy while holding a glass of wine on his hand.

For months, after the after the war with the Japanese, Maharaja Siagu XV have been busy with sorting things with the government, military, and the envoys from other nations, whom have wanted to further their diplomatic relationship with Butuan.

And now, with the days of October finally started to reach the end of the first week, an envoy from Joseon, Daesa (Ambassador) Kim Hong-ju, arrived escorted by Head Eunuch Isagani.

"Your Majesty," Daesa Kim Hong-ju greeted while showing the curtsy worthy for a monarch.

Maharaja Siagu XV faces Daesa Hong-ju with a smile and replied, "Ah… Daesa Hong-ju. How was Joseon? I presume everything must be doing well, especially with the arrival of your countrymen whom were worthy to join the venture of technological advancement?"

"The gods may bless you and your family in times to come," Daesa Hong-ju replied with delight and appreciation, "With your nation's help and goodwill, Joseon have been progressing on a much brighter path. Reforms were made tailored with the reforms made by Butuan. It was like a dream for us and King Gojong as handing reforms used to be difficult."

This made Maharaja Siagu XV nod in delight knowing the improvements made by friend, King Gojong, on Joseon. Maharaja Siagu XV knows full well, right after his previous visit to Hanseong, that without taking immediate and decisive action in reforms and acceptance of Western influence in running the country, Joseon is heading to its eternal doom.

Being an emperor had taught Maharaja Siagu XV the delicate art of balancing the preservation of traditional culture with the incorporation of Western ideologies. He understood deeply that progress and tradition were not mutually exclusive, but rather, could coexist harmoniously to propel society forward. This conviction led him to frequently reprimand his heir, Yuvraj Siagu Alexie, whenever the young yuvraj spoke fervently about solely preserving the traditions of the empire.

To Maharaja Siagu XV, progress and tradition were like the two wings of a bird; both were necessary for a nation to soar to new heights. He knew that clinging exclusively to tradition, without opening up to new ideas and innovations, would hinder the empire's growth and leave it vulnerable in a rapidly changing world. In his mind, the empire's rich cultural heritage could be preserved while still embracing the beneficial aspects of Western technology, governance, and education.

"That is good to hear," Maharaja Siagu XV replied with a nod before he takes a look at the seating Daesa Hong-ju, "I presume it was a challenge for Gojong to stabilize the court and the people after the war. I heard that some remnant supporters of the diseased Sunjong still lingers on the North, claiming that Gojong is the pretender. Hahaha."

Hearing Maharaja Siagu XV's words, Daesa Hong-ju could not help it but felt a bit embarrass knowing that the news of his homeland having some issues with maintaining stability. Anger and resentment were also being felt by Daesa Hong-ju towards the remnant rebels as those people have the continuously causes trouble to his homeland.

With hint of resentment on his voice, Daesa Hong-ju replied, "That is indeed the case, Your Majesty," with confidence on his voice, Daesa Hong-ju continues "Remnants from the previous usurper still lingers to the north but His Majesty, King Gojong, along with Prince Uihwa, who is leading the operation are doing their best to take those rebels to eradication."

Since the capitulation of Hanseong and the defeat of King Sunjong and Heungseon Daewongun. King Gojong and Prince Uihwa have been doing their best in restoring the nation into stability, with the help of the military trained by Butuanon soldiers. King Gojong focuses more on the court and governance, while the young Prince Uihwa focuses more in uprooting the lawless of the land.

And according to the letters Daesa Hong-ju frequently receives from the government in Hanseong, everything has been progressing in a more positive side of the coin. With the people resuming its usual life, after the celebration conducted after the liberation of Hanseong, restoring the faith of the people to the king. Bringing Daesa Hong-ju on a more positive view of having his homeland be on par with Siam and Japan in no time, with the pace of development.

"That is indeed good to hear," Maharaja Siagu XV smilingly replied while nodding, before turning his tone into a bit serious one "So, what brought you here for this moment, Daesa Hong-ju?"

"Your Majesty…" Daesa Hong-ju stated before taking his stand and prostrated in front of Maharaja Siagu in haste.

Head Eunuch Isagani and Head Court Lady Putri Chaya of Sipitang, both in sudden shock, tried to made Daesa Hong-ju to rise. But before the two courtiers could even assist the Daesa, Maharaja Siagu XV prevented his courtiers by raising a hand.

"The government of Joseon and the royal house of Yi would like to give you our thanks and deep gratitude for the help in retaking our homeland and prevention of us being under the control of other nation, once more. With you and your nations contribution, Joseon is eternally grateful and will always remember this as a show of deep friendship between our two nations.

Not just did you help us in liberation but have even provided us help in reconstruction and rehabilitating. Not to mention that the protection and recognition to the family of King Gojong have greatly contributed on immeasurable contribution." Daesa Hong-ju stated in deep reverence and gratitude while tears started to form on his eyes.

"Daesa Hong-ju…" Maharaja Siagu XV replied, "What I have done is what normal monarch of a friendly nation will do. There is no need for this elaborate appreciation."

Daesa Hong-ju then take his stand after hearing the reply of Maharaja Siagu XV before returning to his seat and continuing the conversation.

"Your Majesty, aside from thanking you on sheltering the family of King Gojong. I am also here to asked for your help…" Daesa Hong-ju stated in a much calmer and composed tone while facing Maharaja Siagu XV.

Confused and curious, Maharaja Siagu XV replied, "Help? Didn't you say that Prince Uihwa have already doing his best in capturing those rebels whom wanted to destabilize Joseon once again? Besides, Major General Luna is in Hanseong now to assist Gojong in reforming his kingdom following our nation's structure. Seeking my help would mean those weren't enough on finishing that job?"

With a smile on his face, Daesa Hong-ju replied, "Your Majesty, I am not referring to that one when I asked for your help. Pray tell, Your Majesty, King Gojong would like to ask for your support in declaring the Joseon Kingdom an empire and calling it the Korean Empire later this month."

Hearing Daesa Hong-ju's words, Maharaja Siagu XV could not help but be amazed and grin inwardly. In his thoughts, the fact that King Gojong sought his support proved his success in establishing a good and strong relationship with the royal family of Joseon. This also showed that they were dependent on the reaction of Butuan.

Contentment was what Maharaja Siagu XV truly felt after realizing that his dreams were finally taking shape. His diplomatic efforts, carefully nurtured over the years, were bearing fruit. The respect and recognition from Joseon symbolized a broader acceptance of his reign and his vision for the Butuan Empire.

Daesa Hong-ju, on the other hand, fully understood the reasoning behind his monarch's desire to seek the recognition of Maharaja Siagu XV and the entire Butuan Empire. In the world of international politics, isolation was tantamount to inviting trouble and courting the death of a nation. Joseon, in its current state, could not stand alone; the recognition and support of the Butuan Empire were crucial, along with that of other friendly nations.

For years of staying in Sooraj, Daesa Hong-ju understood the power and influence Butuan and Maharaja Siagu XV had towards its neighboring nations, especially after the end of the war with Japan. Daesa Hong-ju was confident that the moment Butuan recognized Joseon as an empire of equal footing, other nations would follow, especially the Kingdom of Siam, which had been the closest ally of Butuan since ancient times.

Maharaja Siagu XV took a moment to contemplate the request. The declaration of the Korean Empire would be a significant geopolitical shift. He understood the delicate balance of power in the region and the potential ripple effects of such a move. Yet, the prospect of solidifying an alliance with Joseon and furthering Butuan's influence was too valuable to ignore.

Turning to Daesa Hong-ju, the Maharaja's expression became resolute. "Inform King Gojong that he has my full support. The Butuan Empire will recognize the Korean Empire and stand by Joseon in this endeavor."

Daesa Hong-ju bowed deeply, a sense of relief washing over him. The support of Butuan was secured, and with it, the hopes of Joseon. As he left the audience chamber, he knew that this moment would be remembered as a pivotal point in the histories of both nations.

Maharaja Siagu XV, meanwhile, began to draft a proclamation, summoning his advisors and envoys to ensure that the support for Joseon was both immediate and unequivocal. A telegraphic message was also crafted by Maharaja Siagu XV to be sent to the King of Siam, Queen of Hawai'i, and Emperor of Japan, each informing them of the plans of King Gojong in proclaiming Joseon as an empire.

As Maharaja Siagu XV finishes his tasked on crafting the messages, Maharaja Siagu XV closes his eyes and started to envision a future where he and his descendants build a better nation. Paving the way for a nation worthy to be called, the heart of monarchial nation, not just in Asia but also in the entire world. As Maharaja Siagu XV dives deeper on to his thought, his son and heir, Yuvraj Siagu Alexie is also busy placing chess pieces on the world map on his study table.

With his small but indignant stature, alone in the dimly lit room, Yuvraj Siagu Alexie observes deeply and smilingly as all chess pieces started to form according to his own bidding.

"The flow of time has been changed… The future might be uncertain but I am confident that this will not be a problem." Yuvraj Siagu stated with confidence, "Qing Dynasty… the country that must be removed into existence in one way or another."

But as Yuvraj Siagu continues to observed the map while standing on the chair, a knock can be heard outside the room. Causing Yuvraj Siagu to take his seat and allow the person to enter, and it is his personal courtier, Senior Eunuch Radhesh bringing with him an elaborated designed letter.

"Sorry to disturb you, Your Imperial Highness." Senior Eunuch Radhesh stated while bowing his head a bit, "But a letter has arrived from Bangkok this morning, addressed to you, Your Majesty."

Curious, Yuvraj Siagu replied in his cute 10-year-old tone, "A letter? But I am not expecting one to arrive today. To whom it is coming from?"

"It is from Crown Prince Vajiravudh, Your Imperial Highness." Senior Eunuch Radhesh replied while handing the letter to Yuvraj Siagu himself.

As Yuvraj Siagu receives the letter, a smile forms on his face as he reads the content of the letter. A smile that Senior Eunuch Radhesh have seen several times. A smile that shows Yuvraj Siagu expected it to happen.
