Chapter 31: Edge Runner and Stone Mill
Thinking of this, Zhao Hai swiftly entered the Space. Although he didn't like others seeing inside the Space, he had to bring Merine and Meg to show them as a way to reassure them. The fate of the Buda Family now depended on their cooperation.
Inside the Space, Zhao Hai explained the situation to Merine and Meg to boost their confidence. With the constant crises in the Black Wasteland, losing their confidence would spell disaster for them.
Afterward, Zhao Hai immediately bought radishes in the Space. He bought 1,500 gold coins worth of radishes, adding to the 50 gold coins he already had. He now had a total of 1,550 gold coins, which could buy enough radishes to plant for ten seasons.
Although Zhao Hai considered using the radish remains to plant more, he realized that radishes were different from corn. Radishes were mainly eaten as roots, and he wasn't sure if the Space could maintain their quality. Additionally, the radish seeds were limited in quantity and not as high-yielding as corn, so Zhao Hai decided against planting them.
Selling the radishes would bring in a significant amount of money. Once Green returned from selling their goods outside, they could sell the radishes as well. With the extra money, Zhao Hai planned to buy books on the plants of the continent to expand his knowledge. He needed a better understanding to further develop the land.
Zhao Hai sighed, realizing that he had to wait since his current level was too low. He couldn't even afford to buy advanced-level seeds. He would have to rely on the speed of the Space's leveling up, which he was unsure about.
When Zhao Hai woke up the next morning, he was awakened by the sound of mature radishes in the Space. He checked the Space and noticed that the radishes and corn were about to reach maturity.
Zhao Hai immediately harvested the radishes and bought another bag of radish seeds to plant. He also observed the corn, which would mature in a few minutes. Not wanting to leave the Space, he washed his face and mouth using the water from the Space, waiting patiently inside.
Looking at the corn, Zhao Hai's mouth began to water. Although corn was not considered a staple food in his hometown, he had occasionally enjoyed it. But the corn in the Space was different. Its taste was delicious, and he couldn't resist its allure.
Zhao Hai suddenly remembered an issue. How was the corn processed? He couldn't recall how people ate corn back in his world without using grinders or mills. He wondered how they managed to process corn.
Then, a realization struck him. He remembered seeing two tools on television but hadn't used them himself. These tools were the edge runner and the stone mill. He had seen them being used in rural areas but hadn't encountered them recently. It seemed like people in the countryside had stopped using them. Now he understood how corn was processed.
Zhao Hai came out of the Space and noticed that Meg and Chrysanthemum were bringing copper wash bowls towards his room. When Meg saw Zhao Hai, she was surprised and said, "Young Master, you're awake. You haven't washed up yet."
Zhao Hai smiled and replied, "It's alright. I'm up. Don't worry about it. Chrysanthemum, is your younger brother awake?"
The chrysanthemum lowered her head while standing behind Meg. Upon hearing Zhao Hai's words, she quickly responded, "Thank you for your concern, Young Master. Secure is doing well and is waiting to greet you outside."
Zhao Hai smiled and said, "No need to be so formal. Let's go to the living room. Call Secure, I have something to ask him."
Meg and the chrysanthemum nodded in agreement and followed behind Zhao Hai as he walked towards the living room. Once they reached the living room, Meg placed the brass basin she was holding and stood behind Zhao Hai, while the chrysanthemum went outside the room to call Secure.
In the fort, there were separate areas for the main residence and the servant quarters. The main residence was where they lived, while the servant quarters consisted of smaller houses for the servants. The chrysanthemum and Secure currently resided in the servant quarters. Although they were commoners and had been granted the Buda Family surname by Zhao Hai, their status was still far lower compared to Meg and the others. Meg and the chrysanthemum were trusted aides, while Secure and the chrysanthemum were ordinary servants.
After a short while, the chrysanthemum returned with Secure. Secure's stature was quite tall, although he appeared a bit thin, he seemed strong. He no longer had the suffocating appearance from before and now stood with his head lowered, not daring to speak.
The chrysanthemum approached Zhao Hai and said with her head lowered, "Young Master, Secure has arrived."
Zhao Hai nodded and looked at Secure, then smiled and said, "No need for such formality, I have something to ask you." The chrysanthemum had already explained to Secure before his arrival, allowing him to address Zhao Hai as Young Master instead of Master.
Secure knelt down and kowtowed, saying, "Secure pays respects to Young Master and thanks Young Master for saving my life."
It seemed that the chrysanthemum had already briefed Secure about the situation, enabling him to address Zhao Hai as Young Master instead of Master. Zhao Hai nodded and said, "No need for such formalities. You are now a member of the Buda Family, and it was only right for us to save you. Please stand up."
Secure thanked Zhao Hai again and stood up, but he remained slightly bowing his body and keeping his head lowered, not daring to look directly at Zhao Hai.
Seeing Secure's submissive demeanor, Zhao Hai frowned. He didn't like such servility towards him; it was not the kind of attitude he appreciated. Zhao Hai silently said, "Secure, raise your head. You must remember that you are now a member of the Buda Family and a commoner. If you go out in the future, you represent the face of our Buda Family. Don't always bow your head in servility; it will only make others look down on the Buda Family."
Upon sensing Zhao Hai's apparent anger, the chrysanthemum and Secure immediately knelt down and kowtowed, saying in unison, "Please punish us, Young Master."
Zhao Hai couldn't bear this and quickly said, "Alright, enough with the kneeling. Stand up." As they stood, Secure appeared even more stiff and tense. Zhao Hai continued, "Secure, I have a question for you. Do you have any masonry skills?"
Secure quickly replied, "Yes, Young Master. My father was a mason, and I have learned some basic masonry skills. Although I'm not highly proficient, I can handle general tasks."
Zhao Hai nodded and said, "That's good. I will draw two designs later, and I want you to take a look. If you can do it, organize some people to mine several stones as soon as possible for the things I need."
Secure's heart tightened, but he still bowed and said, "Yes, Young Master."
