Chapter 60: Boss Fatty's Status
In the world of magicians on the continent, the strength of a magician is generally proportional to their age. The practice of magic is much more challenging than that of warriors. Warriors can start practicing at a young age without requiring significant physical endurance. They can gradually build up their strength and eventually undergo Battle Qi induction training under the guidance of a mentor.
The practice of Battle Qi is not easy. It requires the body to meet certain strength requirements. Battle Qi is a formidable force that places high demands on the body's strength.
On the other hand, the practice of magic is even more difficult compared to Battle Qi. In Ark Continent, all children are sent to specialized places to test their innate magical abilities. If they possess magical talent, they receive focused training. If not, they return to their families to become warriors.
However, the practice of magic has strict age requirements. No one can start practicing magic before the age of twelve. After years of exploration, it has been discovered that a person's spiritual force stabilizes around the age of twelve. Practicing magic too early can lead to instability and backlashes of spiritual force, which can result in possession by dark forces or even death.
Due to these reasons, powerful magicians are generally not young. While there are exceptions like Meg, who became a young 6th level magician, such cases are rare and exceptional talents.
The strength of Merine and her group is known to only a few people on the continent. They have kept this information strictly confidential, even within the Buda Family. They are well aware that if Meg's strong cultivation level at such a young age becomes known to others, it would lead to two possible outcomes: either she would be controlled and trained as the ultimate weapon, or she would be killed. Neither of these options is desirable to them.
Although magicians start practicing later than warriors, their lifespan is generally longer. An 8th level warrior can live up to 200 years in Ark Continent, but an 8th level magician can live at least 250 years. This is why advanced-level magicians are highly valued by countries. A single advanced-level magician can provide protection to a nation for about a century.
Due to the longer lifespan of individuals on Ark Continent compared to other places, the development of the continent has been relatively slow despite thousands of years having passed. The utilization of magical machinery is also low in this society.
Green advised Zhao Hai not to speak much because shopkeepers like the one they encountered are perceptive individuals with extensive experience. They can estimate a person's age and even deduce their identity from their speech. Observing people is their livelihood.
The shop assistant led Zhao Hai and his companions into the shop. The interior decoration was impressive. Upon entering, they found themselves in a spacious hall illuminated by a magical lamp, despite it being daytime. They saw a large counter at the entrance with two attractive female staff members behind it. The boss, a fat man, stood respectfully nearby wearing fine silk clothes adorned with a Red Spider Lily Badge, indicating his authority in the shop.
Upon seeing Zhao Hai, the boss immediately approached and greeted him with a bow, saying, "Welcome, esteemed Magician Zhao Hai. It is an honor to have you in our shop. Please make yourself comfortable here. We will promptly arrange your accommodation, and any other services you require can be provided at your convenience."
Without saying a word, Zhao Hai turned and found a nearby resting area where he sat down. The area had several sofas and a tea table, providing a comfortable place to relax. As Zhao Hai sat, a female staff member approached and placed a teapot and a cup on the table in front of him. Meg was about to help pour the tea, but Zhao Hai waved her off, and she stood by his side instead.
Zhao Hai exuded an imposing aura this time, wearing his black Magic Robe that contrasted with his extraordinary temperament. Combined with his silence and minimal movements, he seemed almost invisible, if not for Green and Meg standing beside him. People couldn't help but take notice of him.
The shop owner observed Zhao Hai's unusual demeanor and couldn't help but be impressed. His eyes widened, but he maintained a smile on his face. After a while, he approached Zhao Hai and respectfully said, "Esteemed Magician Zhao Hai, your room has been prepared on the third floor. Please allow me to escort you there."
Zhao Hai nodded and stood up, following the boss towards the third floor. The layout on the third floor was different from the lower floors. Instead of a hall, there was a staircase leading to individual rooms. Zhao Hai noticed that there were fewer rooms on the third floor compared to the lower floors.
They arrived at room 301, and the fat boss personally opened the door for them. After Zhao Hai and the others entered, the boss stood respectfully outside the door and said, "Esteemed Magician Zhao Hai, if you have any needs, simply ring the bell, and I will immediately provide you with meals and handle any other procedures for you. This room has five bedrooms, which should be sufficient for you and your followers. If needed, I can arrange another room for you."
Zhao Hai nodded and walked towards the room without saying a word. Green understood his intention and turned to the boss, saying, "Your arrangements are satisfactory, boss. You may leave now, but remember to deliver our meals promptly."
The boss bowed respectfully and said, "It is my honor to serve a great magician like you. Please excuse me." With that, he closed the door and left.
As the boss walked away, Zhao Hai let out a long sigh and took off his hat. He turned to Green with a wry smile and said, "I didn't expect these clothes to be so effective. Just look at how respectful that boss was. It's quite amusing."
Green also removed his hat and coldly snorted, saying, "Him? Young Master, you're too naive. That boss is just following the norms of his profession. What's more, you may not know this, but this shop belongs to the Markey Family. That fat boss is an undercover informant for the Markey Family. I believe it won't be long before they find out about our presence here."
Zhao Hai said, surprised, "So this shop is owned by the Markey Family. Grandpa Green, why did we choose to stay here? Isn't it risky?"
Green smiled and replied, "That's the idea, Young Master. Sometimes it's better to keep a low profile. If they suspect us and investigate us, it will only draw more attention. But by staying here unnoticed, these people won't suspect any connection between us and the Buda Family. They wouldn't imagine that you, a necromancer, could summon undead creatures."
Zhao Hai nodded, realizing the reasoning behind their choice. He then asked, "By the way, Grandpa Green, how did you know that this shop belongs to the Markey Family?"
Green smiled and explained, "It's not a secret. The Red Spider Lily symbol outside the shop is the emblem of the Markey Family. Given their influence on the continent, it's no surprise that they would operate a shop like this. Besides, living here has its advantages. We're close to Iron Mountain, where there are many magic beasts. Being located here allows us to obtain useful resources easily and at a low cost. Markey Delphi, being such a powerful business, wouldn't overlook a place like this."
Zhao Hai nodded, understanding the situation. He had also learned from his reading that many materials on the continent were derived from magic beasts. The powerful bodies of these creatures, combined with their inherent magical attributes, provided valuable materials for alchemists and craftsmen. Adventurers and mercenaries often made a living by hunting and killing these magic beasts.
However, Zhao Hai was still puzzled about the absence of mercenary guilds on the continent, as he hadn't come across this concept in the books. So he asked Green, "Grandpa Green, where do mercenaries find jobs? Do they solely rely on hunting magic beasts?"
Green smiled and explained, "No, that's not the case. Mercenaries can find jobs in any big city. In these cities, shops like equipment stores, inns, and taverns often offer job assignments. These places are free for mercenaries to seek work. So as long as a mercenary visits a tavern in any city, they can find work. Even if it's not suitable, they can move on to another city. However, for big businesses like Markey Delphi, their job assignments are available in all their shops across the continent. They share information between branches. In other words, if you post a job in Black Mountain City, it will be visible to mercenaries in all Markey Delphi Trading Company shops on the entire continent. It's as simple as that."
