VALEN’S POV
I brushed a stray curl away from Bethany's still face and tucked the sheet more firmly around her. I knew she was only sleeping, but I couldn't help the sadness I felt as I stared down at my little sister, lying in bed. Unmoving.
I sighed and sat back into the chair I had pulled to her bedside.
"Don't worry, sweet girl. I'll fix everything," I told her, even though I knew she couldn't hear me.
I would. With the call I'd gotten earlier, it would be happening sooner rather than later.
I sighed at the soft knock at the door that interrupted my thoughts. I was certain she’d noticed how evasive I’d been since I’d gotten the call this morning.
Despite my reluctance to involve her in any of this again, I knew Zira wasn't going to allow herself to be left out. She’d been surprisingly good-natured about my silence regarding all things relating to the hunt for Orian and his Healer, but I supposed her patience had come to an end.
“Come in,” I answered.
