A New Day

A boy is running with a girl, both being exhausted. The girl is much taller than the boy. She has brown hair in a messy bun, white skin, and black eyes. She is wearing a long sleeve pink sweater with blue overalls, but her clothing is torn and burnt. Her beautiful face had dirt and blood all over it. The horizon was painted in fire and smoke. They both continue to run until they both hear a loud BOOM behind them. The girl falls on the burnt grass holding her side, tears rolling down her face.

Girl: Kyle... please.

The girl's voice was filled with fear and sorrow. When the girl looked at Kyle her eyes widened with fear. It was as if the girl was afraid of him.

Kyle: This ... this wasn't supposed to happen.

Kyle was fighting to hold back tears. His eyes red because of the smoke and dirt flying through the air.

Kyle: I can still fix this. Please ... let me fix this.

???: You can't fix this.

A feminine voice comes from behind Kyle. Kyle turns around and sees a tall woman. She had dark green hair, she had heterochromia so both of her eyes were different colors, one was a fluorescent green and the other was black. She was wearing black jeans and a lab coat that was buttoned up. The lab coat had a navy-blue B and a dark gray P, with a sword piercing the top of the P on the back of the lab coat.

Kyle: Serena ...

Serena: If you two never ran away I wouldn't have been forced to do this. So, in a way this is all your fault.

Kyle: Please ...

Serena: What?

Kyle: I ... I will do whatever you want.

Kyle falls to his knees and tears begin to roll down his face.

Kyle: Just ... not again

Serena: When you beg like that it kinda makes me want to spare you. Unfortunately, I cannot though, or I will be punished in your place.

Serena then begins to walk over to the girl lying on the ground in pain.

Kyle: Please ...

Serena raises her foot into the air and brings it down on top of the girl's head. Leaving a deep color of crimson splattered on the ground with some of it landing on Kyle's face. Kyle's eyes slowly looked down to look at the remains of the girl. The skull was crushed wide open revealing the chunks of brain that were spread out and crushed outside of the girl's skull. Her right eye was crushed and mixed in with the disgusting crimson chunks of brain and skull and her left eye fell out of its socket rolling all the way to Kyle's knees.

Kyle rejected what he saw in front of him. He could not accept the reality that he was witnessing. His eyes constantly looked up at Serena and then looked down at the girl's body and he repeated this cycle over, and over, and over, and over again. He hunched over and vomited on the ground in front of him.

Kyle: Why? Why did this need to happen? She didn't deserve anything like this. She deserved a happy and full life. So ... Why?

Kyle's voice cracked and faltered when he spoke.

Kyle was not asking Serena this question; he wasn't asking the girl in front of him or even himself. No, that would've been too simple. Kyle was asking the World.

Serena: I can tell you why. It is because you ran.

Kyle: ... What?

Serena: If you just cooperated and just listened to us, she would still be alive, but now look at her.

Serena then points down to the girl's remains.

Serena: I mean just look at her. She is a great example of what happens if you run away.

Kyle: But if we didn't run, we would've been trapped in that place forever.

Serena: Well, being trapped is ten times better than being dead. If you just stayed obedient, and stayed quiet like we told you to then she wouldn't be dead right now.

Serena lifted her boot out of the crushed skull of the girl. Brain matter and skull fragments were stuck to her boot as she pulled it out. She then began to walk over to Kyle.

Kyle then began to crawl backwards trying to get away from Serena. He began to grab at the ground as he crawled back throwing up dirt, burnt grass, and small rock at Serena trying to slow her down.

Kyle: STAY BACK!

Serena: This world runs on rules and people who cannot follow them will be punished. If anyone would know that it would be me.

Serena lifts her foot and stomps down on Kyle's ankle. He screamed as tears began to flood through his eyes. He could hear the bones break. Her foot remained on his ankle anchoring him down so he could no long crawl away. He did however continue to throw up dirt at Serena.

Serena: Why put in all of this effort? You will not win. In the end this will all be in vain.

Serena lifts her other foot into the air and brings it down on Kyle's chest. As the air left his lungs and his consciousness wavered, he turned his head to look at the field that was covered in flames. Why couldn't they just let them be happy? Why did they sacrifice so many innocent people just to make sure that him and this girl suffered? Why were his parents killed? Why did this girl need to die? Why did he have to resort to eating garbage for so long? Why did his other allies betray him? What did he do to deserve this? What did she do to deserve this? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

WHY MUST THE WORLD BE THIS WAY?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle wakes up with tears rolling down his face.

Kyle: It was just a dream.

He sits up in his bed and wipes his eyes with the sleeve of his orange one-piece. He instinctively bends his head down to look at his hands. When he does, he feels a big jolt of pain in his neck. He then reaches to the back of his neck, his fingertips grazing the bandages wrapped around it, and begins massaging it.

Kyle: I don't think I will ever get used to this pain.

Kyle gets out of his bed and takes two steps to walk over to his mirror. He finds a roll of clean bandages sitting on the ground in front of the mirror. Kyle picks them up and begins to unroll the bandages around his neck. He looks into the mirror and sees a scar that reminds him of a river bifurcation. There was a single thick line going from the top of his neck, down his throat, to the top of his chest. It had 8 other scars diverging from it. The 8 other scars diverging from the main one wrapped around Kyle's entire neck. One even wrapping around and curving down to reach the top of his back. The entire scar was red almost as if it was just cut open. He continued to roll the new bandages around this scar.

Kyle: I need to get them out of here.

Masculine voice: Report to the lobby and get ready for breakfast.

Kyle finishes rolling the bandages around his neck.

Kyle: It is hard wrapping these bandages around my neck with this damn collar on.

While wrapping the bandages around his neck he simply would move the collar up or down his neck. Kyle then walks through the door to see Gio and Sarah already in the lobby.

Kyle: Good Morning Gio. Good Morning Sarah.

Sarah: Good Morning.

Gio: Morning.

Gio yawned into his hand and scratched his head. Sarah was holding her stuffed toy Rachel. Kyle always wondered why Raymond allowed Sarah to keep Rachel. After all, you weren't supposed to be allowed to keep belongings in this place. They all hear metal sliding on a surface and turn around to see Raymond standing in front of the hallway.

Raymond: It is time for breakfast everyone.

Kyle: Yeah, no shit.

Raymond: No matter what you say my mood will not be swayed.

A wide smile runs across Raymond's face, his yellow eyes shining with happiness.

Raymond: My two new assistants will be arriving later tonight. So, I will have extra help around here.

Raymond puts both of his hands on his hips and puffs his chest.

A look of terror forms on Sarah's face. Kyle begins to sweat, and a look of worry appears on his face. Gio looks at both of them with worry in his eyes.

Gio: Are you two, okay? *whispering*

Sarah: We are fine, don't worry. *whispering*

Sarah shuffles over to Kyle and begins holding his hand.

Raymond: Well, let's get moving everyone.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle and Sarah were sitting at the table eating their breakfast. Their plates had waffles, strawberries, sausage, and eggs. Sarah had sat Rachel down on the table in a way, so it was looking at Kyle. If the toy actually looked normal Kyle wouldn't have minded it one bit, but because of the stuffed toy's old age some of the stuffing was coming out of multiple spots on the toy. Dirt mixed in with its naturally light-yellow color which turns the color of the toy to a disgusting orange. The green yarn that made the toy's eyes was slowly unraveling, so the eyes were droopy and could have come unstitched with one good tug. So, the toy looking at him in that way made him feel a bit uncomfortable.

Sarah: Raymond took Gio again.

Kyle: Yeah. It's weird though.

Sarah: What?

Kyle: I mean I know Raymond is trying to keep us from talking to Gio as much as possible. He even changed the schedule making it, so we shower at night now. It is a little strange though. Why do none of the guards know where he is? Shouldn't they be aware of everything that takes place in this facility. And why isn't Gio allowed to tell us where Raymond takes him? *whispering*

Sarah: Wait if you don't know where Raymond takes Gio then how did you know Gio could help get you supplies? *whispering*

Kyle: Well, I didn't. Me giving Gio that list of stuff was kind of like me asking if he could get them for me. If he didn't know what any of that stuff was, I would've had to think a little harder on how to escape. *whispering*

Sarah: Oh. Well, maybe he isn't allowed to be doing it. *whispering*

Kyle: What? *whispering*

Sarah: Maybe Raymond hasn't told the guards and tells Gio not to tell anyone because he isn't supposed to be doing whatever he is doing. *whispering*

Kyle: That is ... a surprisingly good theory. *whispering*

Kyle then looks around the room. Looking at all of the guards.

Kyle: We are going to bring Gio with us. *whispering*

Sarah's eyes widened and looked at Kyle. She instinctively began to tighten her grip on the fork she was using to eat. When she started to tighten her grip, she felt a pain in her hands and dropped her fork on the ground. Kyle bent down to grab her fork.

Sarah: Are you sure? *whispering*

Kyle: Well, he might think he wants to stay when the time comes but ... we can't just leave him here. *whispering*

Sarah: And you are sure that we have to escape now. Raymond said there is going to be a really bad snowstorm tonight. And he said that it would last for a couple of days. *whispering*

Kyle: Well personally if it were up to me, we would be escaping in spring. We don't really have a choice though. The assistants are arriving tonight and when they arrive, we might as well just give up on escaping at that point. *whispering*

Kyle come's up from grabbing Sarah's fork. He then begins wiping it off with the sleeve of his one piece. When he is done Kyle lays the fork in front of Sarah on the table. Sarah grabs the fork and begins looking down at her food.

Sarah: Breakfast is almost over. So, we will have to go back to ... that room.

Kyle: ...

Kyle was at a loss for words. Sarah was so young, but she has seen and lost so much.

Kyle: This ... this will be the last time you ever have to experience that room, Sarah. So, you don't need to worry anymore after today. *whispering*

The warp activates. Raymond walks out.

Raymond: It is time for you two. Let's go.

Kyle and Sarah get up from the table. Kyle walks over to Sarah and gets down on one knee.

Kyle: This will be the last time I will ever let you get hurt. I won't always be able to be there, and you know that. However, I swear after this you will only know happiness and you will have an amazing life. I promise that at the end of all of this you will be happy. *whispering*

When Kyle says that tears begin to roll down Sarah's face. It was a big promise that deep down Sarah knew that Kyle wouldn't be able to keep. She knew that harder times have yet to come. She knew that when she needed Kyle the most he wouldn't be there. Even though she knew all of that, she still chose to believe what Kyle said. A part of her wanted to believe that what Kyle was saying was the truth that she would find happiness in this broken world.

Kyle gets up and grabs Sarah's hand.

Kyle: When we get out of here, I will make a new life for you and Gio. I will make it so you can live happily in this world.
