Getting Used To Things

Sarah and Lionel were walking to the Giant house with the white beam of light coming from the top of the house. The closer They got to the house the better Sarah could see the beam. It looked like it was going up into the sky. And it looked like it would've kept going but something was stopping it. The beam of light was hitting some sort of invisible ceiling.

Sarah: What is this place?

Lionel: This is where the cloaking device is held.

Sarah: Oh? Like a device that hides everything. So, is this how you keep an entire village from Break Point?

Lionel: That is exactly right. Hard to believe we didn't have anything like this. It is very useful. Your friend Kyle came along and created it. He gave us a little more room to breathe. He has also helped a lot around the village. He is a good man, a smart man.

Sarah: How did you all stay hidden before?

Lionel: Well we don't usually see Break Point out here. But on the rare occasion when they start getting close we have someone that keeps them away.

Sarah: Mr. Lionel.

Lionel: Yes?

Sarah: How long was I asleep?

The question finally came out. Ever since she woke up. She became even more curious about the question when she found that the blizzard that she was told would last for a few days was gone. She never asked because she could never find a moment to ask someone that she trusted. Until now.

Lionel: You have been asleep for almost a month. Your friend Kyle woke up only two days after we brought you all in.

Sarah: Almost a month ...

Sarah tried to prepare herself to hear something like that, but it didn't make it any less shocking. So much could happen in a month, so much could happen in a week, and so much could happen in a day. She didn't know if she missed a lot. No, she knew she missed a lot.

Sarah: How has Kyle been?

Lionel: He is tired. He is looking for someone and he won't let himself rest until he finds them. His injuries haven't fully healed but he still keeps working.

Sarah: That sounds like him. Working no matter what condition he is in. I worry about him. He has done and been through so much. I wish he would take better care of himself.

Lionel notices Sarah's change in emotion. He couldn't help but blame himself. He was the one that made her start thinking about Kyle. He feels as if he has made her feel terrible ever since they walked out of the house. He needed to think of a way to make her feel better.

Lionel: He has asked for all the pieces of scrapped technology that we had. And with only those scraps he has made amazing technology. It is stuff I would never have dreamed of seeing. And when I say he has help around the village I mean it. He has built houses, made trading posts, and he made it so we could use technology if we want to.

Sarah looks up at Lionel and smiles.

Sarah: Thank you.

Lionel and Sarah stand in front of the entrance of the building with the white beam coming out of the top.

Lionel: You ready?

Sarah: Yes.

Sarah runs through the door immediately after saying that. Her eagerness took Lionel by surprise. The whole time that Lionel has been around Sarah she has been either emotional or quiet. He didn't take her as someone who could get this excited to see someone. When Sarah walks in she sees the source of the white beam of light.

Sarah: The cloaking device.

The cloaking device was a short gray column with a blue orb at the top of it. The blue orb was generating this beam of light that was keeping the entire village hidden. However, that is not what Sarah cared about.

Sarah: KYLE!

Kyle: Yes?

Kyle turns around and looks at Sarah. Both of their eyes begin to water as they run towards each other. Sarah tries to jump into Kyle's arms, but she accidentally puts too much strength into it and jumps so high that she ends up headbutting Kyle. The headbutt was strong enough to make Kyle fall back onto his butt. And while he was down on her level Sarah quickly recovered from the headbutt and ran into Kyle's arms.

Sarah: KYLE!

Kyle: When did you even wake up?

Sarah: I just woke up! I started looking for you and Gio immediately. Kyle, you did it, you really did it. You set us free. Thank you, Kyle.

Kyle: What did you expect? I made a promise to you. I didn't want to look like a liar in front of someone I care about.

Sarah gets off of Kyle and lets him get up. When Kyle gets up that is when Sarah notices two things. She notices that the scar Kyle got on the night that they escaped has healed pretty well. A part of her felt bad. Kyle got the scar from protecting her. If she had been able to take care of herself, he would've never gotten it. The second thing she noticed was that Kyle's left leg was replaced. The leg was now made with a type of metal. It was painted a dark gray with many different names painted onto it in red. Sarah had to hold herself back from crying.

Sarah: What happened?

Kyle: I was burned by Hank's fire. But his fire was different from actual fire. No matter how much treatment it didn't show any signs of getting better. So, this is what I had to resort to. I don't think that leg would've ever gotten even a little better.

Sarah looks Kyle up and down with concern on her face.

Sarah: Are you okay Kyle?

Kyle: Yes.

Sarah: Really?

Kyle: Sarah you are a child you shouldn't be worrying about this stuff. You know I am strong enough to take care of myself. Plus, if I wasn't okay, I would tell you. Trust me.

Sarah smiles and looks back down at Kyle's left leg. Kyle saying that managed to calm Sarah down a bit.

Sarah: ... That is pretty cool.

Kyle: I KNOW RIGHT!?

Sarah: DID IT HURT GETTING IT CUT OFF?!

Kyle: Well, a little bit but you know I had to push through it.

Lionel watched as the two talked and caught up. He doesn't want to intrude on the reunion, so he leans against a wall and patiently waits until they finish talking.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun starts to set in the distance. The conversation between Kyle and Sarah moved to a different building. They moved to one of the buildings that Kyle has built. He called it his "lab". In this building alone he held all of the blueprints he has made and his "works in progress".

Kyle: I plan on doing a lot Sarah. The things I wish to create will help so many people.

Sarah: How did you manage to get so much done in just under a month?

Kyle: Well, I had help.

Kyle points his finger at Lionel who was sitting in the corner.

Kyle: And he isn't the only one who has helped me. I wouldn't be able to do anything if it weren't for them.

Lionel: You have a once in a lifetime mind Kyle. I don't think I have met anyone that can do what you did with just a pile of scraps.

Kyle: Thank you Lionel. And also, Sarah. I would've guessed that Rachel would be out escorting you around. Where is it?

Sarah: Rachel only appears when I feel scared. I feel completely safe right now.

Lionel: Wait so it disappeared earlier because you felt safe?

Sarah: Yes. I trust you, Mr. Lionel. But I really hate Cinco.

Lionel: Please don't say that he means well. And he did have a bit of a point earlier. There are some things about yourself that you could work on.

Sarah: I know that, but did he have to be so hard on me about it? Plus, I AM 8!

Lionel: He can be ... difficult at times.

Kyle: I like Cinco.

Sarah: Well, I don't.

Kyle: ...

Sarah starts walking around Kyle's lab looking at all of the things that he is building.

Sarah: Why did you start building so many things when you haven't even finished one.

Kyle: Yeah, I realized it was a mistake too soon. I just got really excited and felt really inspired when I started building all of these things.

Sarah: Oh well I guess I get that feeling. Wait ...

Sarah turns around and looks at Lionel.

Sarah: How come this place didn't use technology? You all have scraps of technology, but I haven't seen anyone using it.

Sarah just came from a place that used technology for everything. So, not to mention she was in there for years. She assumed that people everywhere became that reliant on technology. A part of her was happy her assumptions were wrong but a part of her was also curious. How could there be a place that relied on technology to function, exist in the same world as a village that didn't even have electricity in it.

Lionel: Because we couldn't.

Sarah: What?

Lionel: Every piece of technology in the world has something called the Break Point Chip. This chip allows Break Point to see your search history, it allows them to see out of the camera of a device, and worst of all it allows them to track the device also. If a single one of us turned on a piece of technology, it would give away our position immediately.

Sarah: Why not just take the chip out?

Lionel: The chip was required for technology to work properly. No chip, no technology. And we thought it was impossible for us to ever use technology again. But Kyle found a way for tech to function without the chip.

Kyle: No, you are wrong.

Lionel: Hm?

Kyle: It wasn't me ... it was my sister that found this out. In fact, the only reason I know how to do any of this stuff is because of her.

Kyle never wanted to talk about what happened with his sister. Every time he thought about her it would look like he was in pain, so Sarah always tried to avoid the subject. She didn't know much about Kyle's sister, but she knows one thing. She was gone.

Lionel: I see then please forgive the misunderstanding.

Kyle: It is fine.

Sarah: You know that still doesn't answer my question.

Lionel: What do you mean?

Sarah: You have access to technology, yet you still don't use it. Why?

Lionel: We are happy with the way things are now. It may not seem like it, but we have a lot going on for us right now. Why would we change any of that?

Kyle: Also we don't have enough resources to make more.

We would if we took apart all of the things you started building.

Kyle: Sorry.

Sarah: ...

Sarah starts to feel exhausted.

Sarah: I am tired. Mr. Lionel, is it okay if I go back to the house?

Lionel: Of course. You can sleep in the room you woke up in this morning.

Sarah walks over to Kyle and looks up at him.

Sarah: Do you sleep in Mr. Lionel's house too?

Kyle: No, I sleep in the lab. I think it is best for me if I have enough personal room for myself.

Sarah: Oh, okay. Then I will come see you tomorrow.

Kyle: I look forward to it.

Sarah walks over to the door of Kyle's lab and opens it.

Lionel: Do you need me to walk you there?

Sarah: No, I remember where to go.

Lionel: Okay, sleep well Sarah.

Sarah walks out of the door and closes it behind her.

Kyle: Sarah already trusts you quite a bit.

Lionel: It appears she does ... she is very strong for her age.

Kyle: I know.

Lionel: ... Have you told her anything about your plans?

Kyle: No and I don't plan on telling her until the time is right.

Lionel: And when will that be?

Kyle: That isn't your concern.

Lionel looks over at Kyle and crosses his arms. He stands up and walks over to Kyle.

Lionel: You have to tell her soon. You are the only person she looks up to. You are everything to her. She will be heartbroken if you-

Kyle: I am aware of what would happen, but I am telling you that it is none of your concern. Do not but your head into me and Sarah's relationship.

Lionel: ... You know Kyle you have been in this village all this time and you have yet to tell me who it is exactly you are looking for.

Kyle: Again, I say that isn't your concern. That is for me and only me to know and if all you are going to do is ask questions then you might as well leave because I don't plan on answering anything you ask me.

Lionel: I see then good night, Kyle sleep well.

Kyle: Good night, Lionel.

Lionel walks out of the door of Kyle's lab and closes it behind him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lionel walks back into his wooden house and starts walking to his room. On his way to his room, he notices that the door to the room Gio was sleeping in was wide open. He goes to close the door but notices that Sarah was sitting next to Gio's bed in a chair.

Lionel: I thought you said you were tired.

Sarah: I am.

She was looking at Gio's face while saying this.

Lionel: Gio is very important to you, isn't he?

Sarah: Yes, he is.

Lionel: Correct me if I am wrong but do you ... like him?

Sarah turns around to look Lionel in the eyes. When she looks at him it looks as if she is about to throw up at just the thought of what Lionel said.

Sarah: Nope, never, not in a million years, not in a billion lives, I would rather die without a doubt in my mind, ew.

Lionel: Oh, my mistake.

Sarah turns back around to look Gio in the face.

Sarah: He seemed pretty scared when I last saw him. We made him leave Break Point. He didn't know what they were really up to but still. I am scared how he will react when he wakes up. What if he is to mad too forgive us. What if he tries to go back. And I am curious why he is still asleep. And how come I was sleep for so long too?

Lionel: I don't know why he is still asleep, but I do know why you were asleep for so long.

Sarah: Really?

Lionel: Yes. It is because of the way you used your Ora. It took a toll on your body.

Sarah: What is Ora?

Lionel: Ora is the energy of existence. And I can't wait to teach you all about it.
