After 3 months undisturbed by the elves I had managed to aquire 5 sources of mana and learned how to use them to an extent and now i could finally use a few of the spells I'd been aching to try out fireball was the first one I wanted to test out. It turns out that without a proper spell casting a fireball is not technically possible but I could create a fire bolt that hit with the force of a crossbow bolt and then I tried a few other ideas using lunar magic to effect healing for instance and it worked fairly well however I forgot that the moon was also commonly associated with fertility and found myself with a raging erection and a serious desire to pound something with my hammer.
The elves returned to find my home covered in budding trees and scorch marks as I tested out my various sources and they did about what you might expect fire could burn and offer light and when pushed through a body it would give the person a fever but would also burn out the impurities in the target lunar would heal create illusions and increase the fertility of anything you used it on while earth reinforced anything stone could create stone from nothing and manipulate the ground lighting could shoot bolts of lightning out that actually hit harder then the fire bolts and could make a person think and move faster while under its influence. The elves found my home a disaster though I was quickly returning it to a state where beyond the trees practically overflowing with vitality you could hardly tell anything at all had happened.
The first question the elves asked was what happened and I told them "A minor inconvenience nothing more" and the elves let it go as if I wasn't going to tell them they weren't going to press the issue as it looked like a full scale war between casters had happened here. After the pleasantries the elves offered some trades and even offered a fruit in trade said to be beneficial for mages called a lunar cherry which after finding out the price for 3 fruits was quite expensive but I made the trade to them as I knew how to grow them quite quickly now. After the elves had left I ate the fruits and planted the seeds quickly then realized that the fruits were having a positive effect on the density of my various sources and I grew excited and worked to grow the fruits quickly using lunar magic every night to grow them.
Several miles away
"lord the wizard we found on our borders last year seems to have fought a battle and claimed it to be a minor inconvenience we have traded him the lesser lunar cherries as you have directed though we still have not ascertained what his source is we strongly suspect lunar or fire from observations made while we were there its also possible he has both sources though that was not clear when we were there, Lord Elvandial what would you have us do next?" Lord Elvandial sat thinking for a few minutes "This wizard do we know his name? and has he shown any aggressive tendencies in the time you've been observing him?" the soldier still disguised as a trader " No milord on both accounts we had never thought to ask and he has yet to offer it and aside from setting some engenious traps for the goblins has offered none of us harm even though we had shot him with an arrow before we realized his nature" the soldier squirming in his kneeling position admitting his errors to his lord and lord Elvandial responded "Let us leave this wizard to his own devices the steel you traded from him was quite pure and the best our smith's have had to work with in some time you may continue trading with him on your own as any elf who wishes may however should any offer him offense they must be prepared for the price let the people know and resume your normal duties".
3 months later
I have rebuilt my home and expanded my capacity the cherries are nearly ripe and I'd made great strides towards my spell casting ability I'd even used earth magic to fix the issues with my hut and then I had an idea probably a bad one but an idea none the less. I walked out into the enormous field I'd found myself in and began creating a proper wizards tower from the very stones of the earth I worked slowly drawing stone up careful not to weaken the foundation and each part slowly took shape the house for my possible future students a proper dormitory only two floors but with stout stone roof and walls then the tower itself each room in every building had a fireplace I carefully ran outside and I even added a in floor heating system of sorts where heat from a central boiler would work its way up through pipes into the floors of every room of the building and I made the walls thick enough that even my strongest spell could not put anything like a hole in them.
After creating my tower and the associated walls dorms and a proper garden along with training areas and lecture halls honestly the process didn't happen overnight in fact it took a few months to complete but once it was finished whole thing looked like a proper academy of magic and then I began adding the first few things I could which was the academies name and a proper library for the students and doors doors would be good. As I finished what I could the elves came and they came to my original home found it empty then followed my tracks in a way only elves could only to find me finishing the last few details of my academy and I'm pretty sure that the lead elf nearly crapped himself seeing what I'd made since the last time he was here.
As the elf recovered his wits something came our of nowhere and attacked it was a dragon easily the size of a proper transit bus and apparently it was the reason the forest ended so abruptly and he was angry. As the dragon came out of nowhere I didn't react immediately and then I saw the dragon and something broke inside of me he was going to try tearing down my academy and I couldn't have that. As the dragon closed on my position infront of my academy I had to react and I knew I could rebuild the academy so I decided to attempt something different and using my lunar magic my strongest source I began weaving a shield honestly I'd come up with the idea on accident and had tested it out some but not against a angry dragon so it probably wouldn't work but I figured something was better than nothing.
I completed the weave in a second and then added another incase before preparing to properly fight and then I got a shock the dragon spoke and I recognized the language it was dwarvish. My moment of being flabbergasted lasted a few moments then I said in Dwarven "ya big lout could ye say that again" the dragon literally looked at me like I'd sprouted a second head for a moment then said " mortal I have claimed these fields since Ling before you were even a thought drummed up in your father's pants have some respect for your elders" I replied " then take your oversized tookas out of me face a moment and let me damned breath ye smell of week dead carcass and mint not a good combination but mayhap I can rectify that iffin ye let me" the dragon let out a deep throaty laugh then said "ye speak like a true dwarf its been an epoch since I last spoke to a proper dwarf sadly you are not one but certainly speak like one" meanwhile I'm fairly certain the elvish traders had nearly died of shock.
After everything was sorted the dragon gave me permission to complete my academy and even offered safe passage for any students through his lands so long as they didn't cause his livestock any issues and the elves trade for metals this batch seemed particularly interested in my bronze that I'd made as an experiment using magic to forge the metals together. As the elves left I looked at the dragon then decided to offer the being some tea and the dragon accepted as he was amused wondering how I would achieve such a feat so I showed him granted getting the tea to the right flavor proved difficult otherwise it was fairly easy and the dragon was fairly impressed by my feat.
After the dragon had enjoyed his tea and left I looked at the things I'd traded from the elves a book on spells a book on the history of magic and a book on runes which I immediately studied and began creating a rune protection for my entire academy which would draw mana from the earth and moon and store it to provide protection from damage and attacks to anyone inside the walls and then I did the same to the buildings inside as well also adding a path underground from the dorms to both the tower and the lecture halls. After putting all that effort in I was thoroughly exhausted but I still had things I had to do even though I'd taken breaks over the last two months while I made the academy it was a exhausting process to do time after time day in and out and it was no small project there were 4 acres of space alone reserved for crops inside the walls not counting the smithy the armory stables and dormitories nor the tower itself nor the lecture halls and various storage areas or library.
My academy completed I began filling the library and storage places in it and I added my limited collection of books to the library and filled an entire storage room with tools and dried fruits I then planted one entire field with potatoes and onions another I filled with various fruit bearing plants that were delicious and then I harvested the now ripe cherries from the lunar cherry trees and after eating the fruits I planted the seeds around the academy strategically so that no two were two close together. The academy complete and secure I decided that I'd need proper attire so I searched through the ground nearby for anything that might be usable for a proper wizards staff and found a fist sized lump of gold and a silver vein both of which I quickly collected and the gold I turned into coins the silver was purified and set aside however as I continued searching the earth and I found a few scattered crystals that should work well so I brought them up as carefully as possible and quickly I sorted through them before deciding on which I wanted to use and this one was a orange crystal about 15cm in length though I used earth shaping to mold it into a ball. The crystal ended up being approximately a kilo and a half in weight and then I forged the staff using fire and moonlight mana to forge the silver into the shape I wanted written the rubes for strength and protection into the shaft with the ball held on to the staff by root looking strips of silver all meeting at the top and then I carved the runes for light inside of the crystal and fed the orb a tiny bit of mana and it glowed a nice sunset orange and gave off enough light to completely lightva 12 by 12 room. My staff prepared I worked on another project if mine robes and I traded with the elves until I had enough cloth to make a set and then I got to work making a set of gray robes complete with hood and a matching belt woven from elvish silks.
