The plane touched down in Cairo, and the weight of my return settled with it. Egypt, the place that I considered home, now felt heavy with the burden of loss. The dusty air seemed to carry a somber tone and the hot sun felt like the heat of hell as I made my way through the crowded airport.

The drive to Maeve's family's home felt endless, the passing scenery blurred by the fog of my own thoughts. It wasn't supposed to be like this. We were supposed to grow old, and talk about the friendship we had shared. But life, in its unpredictable cruelty, had snatched her away, leaving me with a broken heart that echoed with regret.
