Note - First of all I would like to clear everyone's misunderstanding that William will become a Hero because he has a strong sense of justice. He has a secondary identity that starts as a result of his desire to have powers to protect his daughter. And this is a Hero that is not like your typical Hero who stops robbery or stops thugs at night. This is something much more than that. The stakes are a lot higher and more personal.
I am not talking about Heroes like Captain America or Spider-Man. William is very different. He did not become a Hero because it sounded like fun. He was forced to take that role because of the situations that he had been put into. 
This is a slow novel. Especially the whole first volume might feel very slow for you as in this volume, a background of this fantasy World and William's daily life in Emberfall city is established.

With a flurry of movements too quick for the naked eye to follow, both the master and student vanished from sight, blending into the murky darkness of the night. It was a skill called 'Shadow Dance', a technique of merging with the shadows to become nearly invisible. The pack of shadow wolves, however, didn't slow down, their snarls and growls echoing through the night as they continued their relentless charge towards the village.


All of a sudden, a shadow wolf that was speeding across the farming field was abruptly flung into the air as if hit by an unseen force. The wolf next to it barely had time to register its companion's sudden departure before it too was impaled on a black spear that materialized from nowhere. With a swift, brutal pull, the spear yanked the creature back, throwing it away just like the first wolf.
