After getting out of the thicket, Dane rode naked astride Lilia’s horse with Lilia pressed against his back. As for the other horse, it bore the burden of the unconscious Monk, tied to its back, quite well. 


Lilia surprised everyone by being a master at knot-tying once Patch and Dirge wrapped the ropes around Monk and secured him to the horse.


“Knot tying is very useful,” she said. “I once knotted all our bed sheets together when Mother locked all the doors so that I could slip out and meet Anneliese and go to a festival past my bedtime.”


Patch’s eyes bugged, and he got a big, silly grin. “Is Anneliese your sister?”
