Roland was escort out the captain's cabin, below deck, and arrived at the resting area belonging to the crew.
The inside of sailing ships were divided into multiple rooms or compartments for practical and functional reasons. This design helped to organize and optimize the use of space on the ship.
When Roland entered the resting area for the crew, he saw that it was cramped.
These quarters were often located in the lower decks of the ship, had limited space, and sleeping arrangements were quite basic. The crew's quarters were shared by all members of the crew, and the sleeping conditions were often cramped and uncomfortable.
Hammocks were suspended from the ship's beams, below the beams were clusters of clothes tied to the beams. Although the place was cramped, it was neat and tidy. The walls were painted white, and a few crystals were fitted on the sides to produce light.
The crew on their hammocks, filled the room and were talking and laughing animatedly. They didn't pay attention to their surroundings and were having fun but they weren't to loud. Another group was playing cards, presumably gambling.
The man brought Roland to the side, where an office desk was located. A well-built man was doing some paperwork. The man had a strict expression and jet-black hair. Behind the desk, with his big muscles and build, he looked like a gorrilla doing some paperwork.
"First commander!" The man who brought Roland over, bowed his head slightly and reported.
Without lifting his head or a pause in his work, The 'First commander' said, "Get the steward to arrange a place for him, also get him a uniform that will fit him. Get him a mop, From today onward, he'll be making sure that the deck remains spotless. Also be sure to inform the chef to add an extra plate."
After saying that in a commanding voice, that was neither slow or fast, the 'First commander' remained quite. This strong contrast followed by the silence only made his presence more commanding.
The man besides Roland was accustomed to this, he saluted before leaving. Roland was instructed to remain there.
He noticed that the 'First commander', had a different uniform from the others. The was an insignia on his t-shirt with a star in the middle.
The is probably a hirachy or chain of command on the ship, like how there were different levels within a company.
'I should probably pay more attention to this in the future.' He thought.
Roland felt awkward standing there, but he had nothing to do. He look around and noticed that the crew had smiles on their faces, while they ate, the scene was harmonious.
'Is this comrarady? How envious.' Roland thought when he saw the warm scene in front of him. Thinking back to the time he spent alone.
After failing to make friends in high school, Roland had high expectations for collage. When time came, he was thrown in the dorm room alone, due to the numbers. Ever since then, he had been watching anime alone, which was a great solace.
*sigh*
"What's your name kid." Roland's thoughts were interrupted by the First Commander. Roland looked back and saw that the First Commander still had lifted his head and was looking at him.
"Roland"
"Hmm, that's a brave name, are you brave Roland?"
"I think So." Roland responded withought thinking."
"We'll see then, brave Roland."
After that response, the First Commander continued with his work, the quill moved back and forth at an incredible speed.
The awkward silence descended again.
Just then, a man burst through the door and saluted, "Commander, we've reached the stormy seas!"
Seeing this man, the room suddenly fell quite and everyone perked up their ears. Hearing the man's words, the joy in everyone's faces was suddenly drained, as if it was sucked out.
"No need to shout. Prepare the necessary things." The First Commander finally stopped his work and got up, the man was very tall. He wore a cap with a star in the middle and left the room.
Roland realised that raindrops gradually started hitting the Windows before getting rapid.
"I need everyone in peak condition so lights out in ten, that's an order." The commander voices bounced on the walls. He looked towards group that were playing cards and said,"Also Micky is cheating."
As soon as the captain closed the door, the crew began to whisper and gossip amongst themselves.
"We've finally arrived at this dangerous place."
"We shouldn't have listen to that incompetent bastard, actually threatening the First Commander like that."
"Shhh! Quite! You know that the cap-, the First Commander doesn't want us to badmouth him."
"Besides he was appointed by the Sterling Family, and his the new captain."
"I don't care, the First Commander is the only Captain I'll look up to."
Roland listen to the whispers that gradually got louder, before turning into an argument. He listened in and got some new information, he faintly understood the situation of the ship.
'It seems that the pretentious guy is very good at using other people's names and threatening others.'
After a while the man who went to organise Roland's things returned, and gave Roland a few things and a mop. He instructed, "Go to the back and find a spot I'm sure you already know your job."
After the man left, Roland awkwardly squeezed through the area and arrived at the back. The other people were busy discussing amongst themselves to notice him.
Roland arrived at the back and saw that a small area was empty, he tactfully chose to sat up his space by the coner area, some distance away from everyone.
After some difficulty Roland sat up his hammock and looked at the small area. Luckily the people nearby were fast asleep and didn't see his poor performance.
'At least it's better then that dungeon!' Roland couldn't help reminiscing about his previous arrangements. He shook his head and climbed on his 'bed'.
Just then, the ship started to violently shake, it seemed like they had reach turbulent waters. Roland's things were thrown left to right, up and down. He realised why the others tied up their things under their bed. Roland reacted and grabbed his things before tying it up.
The others didn't seem bothered by the shaking and instead, laid on their hammocks. This attitude eased Roland's mind
Again after some difficulty, Roland got on his slightly weird 'bed'.
Roland closed his eyes and looked at the familiar screen, the corresponding voice sounded.
[Ten hours remaining, till the system starts]
Ten hours seems like a lot of time, especially when you were looking at It, but luckily, Roland knew of a technique to quickly pass the time and not feel it's affects.
The technique didn't require him to find a mad scientist with a car. It was easy to do, just close your eyes and sleep. The art of sleeping was one of the best out there, legend says, if mastered and timed it correctly, it could fight off fatigue and old age.(forgot what I wanted to say so I improvised)
Hanging on the hammock, Roland found it extremely hard to sleep. His body was being thrown back and forth plus. The crew on the other hand were fast asleep, it could be seen that they were accustomed to it.
Time slowly passed as the rain outside got stronger and stronger, the sea was evidently chaotic due to the shaking of the ship. Streaks of lightning danced across the sky like snakes.
Snoring could be heard from all over the room.
Roland who couldn't sleep, got up and squeezed his way through the sleeping 'beauties' and left the room. The shaking of the ship had stopped considerably. He didn't know if there was a toilet on board or not but he needed to relieve himself.
He left the room and searched through the ship. Along the way he didn't encounter any guards, which he found weird. Some of the rooms had doors and were locked so he moved on.
Along the way Roland realised that, there was mostly cargo and food in crates. 'Worthy of being a merchant family.' He thought.
He carried on searching for a bit more, until he opened a door and saw something weird.
In a small 'messy' room there was a small bed, and a wadrobe. Basically someone was living here, the shaking from earlier seemed to have did a number on the furniture, but that wasn't the odd thing.
A boy was standing on one knee, resisting the weight of a wardrobe that was falling on top off him, with his arms and head. Another thing was that, this was the blind boy Roland had met earlier.
Judging by the sweat on his body and current lack of effort, he had been in this position for quite a bit.
"Let me help you." Roland only thought for a second before he helped.
"No I'm fine." As soon as the boy heard Roland, he quickly replied.
He then proceeded to lift the wardrobe but it stayed for a while before falling back down and 'gently' landing on his head.
'What? You clearly need my help! Is he one of those people who hide their emotions? Brother, it's not a good thing deceive yourself.' Roland looked at the struggling boy.
The boy was drenched in sweat, his arms and legs were trembling. Roland sighed and walked up to the wardrobe.
Hearing footsteps, the boy gritted his teeth and shouted, "I said I'm fine! I don't need your help!"
Roland didn't stop though, he stretched out his hands and pushed the wardrobe back, and properly stabilized it.
Roland frowned, 'Wasn't this a little too easy? On top of blindness, he my have a weak physique! *sigh* Life's really not fair.'
"I didn't ask for you to help me, I was fine on my own!" The boy struggle to stand up and looked- I mean face Roland.
Looking at his angry expression, Roland struggled his shoulders and said, " Who said I was helping you? This wardrobe was just standing the wrong way so I decided to fix it."
Roland didn't wait for the boy to respond and left, "I'll let you continue."
In the past hours that Roland hasn't been able to sleep, he had been thinking and came up with a sound plan.
After finding a window that could be opened, and relieving himself, Roland went back to his bed, to try and pass the time.
