My phone started vibrating and I picked it up from the table. My best friend's name flashed on the screen and a small smile appeared on my lips. Getting up from my chair I stood in front of the window and answered the call.
"Hello, Chef." I greeted.
"Hey, Lawyer," Grace said and we both laughed slightly. Calling each other by our profession has been our thing for the past year.
"How does a person who sleeps like a Koala is calling me this late," I said and I know she must have rolled her eyes right now.
"Do you remember last week Aiden proposed to me for marriage?" she said and I could tell she was excited to tell me something.
"Of course I do," I said as I closed my laptop which was in front of me.
"Well, we both decided to get married in the next 20 days." She shouted at the last part.
"Wait! What? Grace, you are getting married in the next 20 days!" I shouted and she laughed at my reaction.
"So yesterday Aiden came to me saying why don't we get married as soon as possible? And of course, I said yes. This morning we discussed it with our parents and guess what, they agreed. So tomorrow you have to come back home to Italy and stay till my wedding." She explained. Excitement and happiness were clear in her voice and I am happy for my best friend.
"Congratulations girl, I am so happy for you. But I have to manage my work from Italy for the next 20 days. That's like a challenge to me, but I will do it for you tough."
"Thank you and yes you have to manage your work, don't give me any excuses for that. I have sent you tomorrow's flight ticket from New York to Italy. Your flight is at 7 am and you will reach at around 4:30 pm. Ah! And you have to come to a resort, don't worry I will send you the address. Aiden has booked a resort till our wedding and everyone will stay there."
"Alright. First, I will go home to meet Mom and Dad, and then I will come to the resort." I said and the next second something clicked in my mind, Grace is mine and his common best friend and he will show up to her wedding. But I can't miss my best friend's wedding for this reason either, she will be very upset if I don't go.
"Um...Grace, maybe I will directly come on your wedding day. My schedule is tight and I can't be so far from my office." I continued and I heard her laughing softly.
"Ava, relax Liam isn't coming. Don't worry." As soon as she took his name my eyes become glossy with tears, but I blinked them away.
"You didn't invite him?" I asked her.
"Of course we did. But he said he can't make it. Probably thought the same thing you just thought and said he can't show up."
"Maybe," I said softly with a sigh.
"Ava, I think you should meet him or at least talk to him. He asks me every time about you." She said with a sad voice.
"I don't want to talk with him, Grace. And I don't care if he wants to talk. There isn't anything left to talk about anyways."
"Ava, you do care. You still do care, and that's the reason you haven't moved on yet. It's been 4 years."
"I don't want to talk about it right now Grace. Congratulations again and I will be there tomorrow evening. Good night, bye." I said and I heard her taking a deep breath before saying.
"Alright, good night."
I don't know if I am ready to go back to Italy after four years. It must have changed a lot. Four years earlier after our separation, I couldn't stay there. Every single place reminded me of him.
So, I came to New York leaving everything and everyone behind in Italy, my family, my friends, and him to start a new life. Even if we met at the wedding, I don't think anything matters now.
Does it?
