The city of Orario remained on edge as the days passed, the presence of the Evils casting a constant shadow over its inhabitants.
The attack on Neze and Iska had sent shockwaves through the adventurer community, leaving everyone on high alert.
In the main room of our base, the Astraea Familia members gathered, discussing their plans for the day. As Alise prepared for her southwest patrol, I couldn't help but feel a surge of determination to join them.
"Can I come with you guys?" I asked eagerly, my desire to contribute to the investigation clear in my voice.
Alise hesitated for a moment, her expression torn between wanting to include me and ensuring my safety. "I understand your eagerness, Kiara, but we need to prioritize your well-being."
Though disappointed, I understood Alise's concern. I was still relatively new to the world of adventuring, and the threat posed by the Evils was significant.
"I want to help in any way I can," I insisted, unwilling to sit idle while my Familia faced danger.
Alise smiled, her eyes reflecting both warmth and pride. "And you will, Kiara. We have an important task for you as well."
Intrigued, I leaned forward, eager to know how I could contribute to the investigation despite not being able to join the patrol.
"Your role," Alise continued, "is to assist Maryuu in gathering information from the healers in the city."
Maryuu, who had been listening intently, stepped forward. "Yes, Kiara. The healers have a vast network and are often privy to information that might not reach the Guild. I need someone I can trust to help me collect any rumors or whispers about the Evils."
I nodded, realizing the significance of the task. "I can do that. I'll gather whatever information I can find."
"Excellent," Alise said. "It's a crucial part of the investigation, and your safety won't be compromised."
Though I wasn't joining the patrols, I felt a sense of purpose in my role. As I headed out with Maryuu, we visited various temples and clinics in the city, talking discreetly to the healers.
They were initially wary of my presence as a high elf, but once they recognized me as part of the Astraea Familia, they opened up, sharing tidbits of information they had heard from their patients.
We learned that the Evils' activities had been escalating, with reports of them targeting other adventurers as well. Each encounter left their victims beaten and injured, their belongings untouched, and their attackers very silent.
Maryuu and I diligently gathered the information, piecing together a pattern of the Evils' movements. We reported our findings to Alise, who in turn, relayed it to the Guild and the Loki Familia.
------------------------------------------------------
Days turned into weeks as the investigation continued, and our base became a hub of activity. The cooperation between Familias grew stronger, and the determination to uncover the truth never wavered.
"We've received some new information from the Guild," Alise announced one evening, gathering everyone in the main room. "They've managed to identify a few members of the Evils, but their leaders remain elusive."
Ryuu frowned, her analytical mind already at work. "Knowing their members is a start, but we need to find out who's behind all this."
Maryuu added, "The healers have been hearing whispers of an underground meeting place where the Evils gather. It could be a lead worth investigating."
"We can split into two teams," Kaguya suggested. "One team can focus on tracking down the identified members, and the other can look into this underground meeting place."
Lyra grinned mischievously. "Sounds like a plan! Who's up for some underground adventure?"
We all shared a laugh at Lyra's enthusiasm, the tension momentarily lifted.
"I'll take the team to track down the identified members," Alise said, her sense of responsibility evident.
"And I'll lead the team to investigate the underground meeting place," Ryuu volunteered.
Seeing them choosing teams, I couldn't help myself but to speak up, "Alise, how about me? Can I join too?"
Alise shook her head once again and softly spoke, "No, Kiara. You will retain your role in helping Maryuu."
Though a part of me yearned to be part of the action, I understood Alise's decision. Maryuu's task was essential to the investigation, and I needed to trust in my role.
With the teams formed, they set off on their respective missions. As Maryuu and I continued our visits to healers, we learned of a possible location for the underground meeting place - an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city.
Word had it that the Evils had been using the place as their secret gathering spot, hidden from prying eyes. This was a chance to gather more valuable information about their plans and the identity of their leaders.
Once we arrived at the warehouse, a chill ran down my spine. The place seemed like it hadn't seen light or life in years. Broken windows and a bunch of cracks the walls, adding to its eerie ambiance.
Maryuu and I approached cautiously, making sure not to alert any potential occupants of our presence. We hid in the shadows, keeping a keen eye on the surroundings.
Time seemed to stretch as we waited in silence, hoping for any sign of activity. Suddenly, a faint murmur reached our ears, followed by footsteps. The sound was growing louder, and it was coming from within the warehouse.
"Psst, over here," Maryuu gestured for me to follow her, and we stealthily made our way to a partially open window.
Peering inside, we saw a group of hooded figures gathered in a circle, their faces obscured by shadows and in the center was a malevolent woman with pink hair instructing the group.
---------------------------------------------
Once Maryuu and I positioned ourselves, we strained our ears to listen to the conversation inside the abandoned warehouse.
The woman with pink hair, her voice rough and arrogant, addressed the hooded figures gathered around her.
"Alright, listen up. We need to increase our numbers by persuading adventurers in alleyways," she declared, her tone sending shivers down my spine. "Anyone who dares to refuse our offer will be swiftly dealt with."
My heart raced as I realized the danger that lurked within this group. They were not merely targeting specific adventurers like Neze and Iska. Instead, they intended to recruit more members by force or coercion.
"Also, the Guild's dogs will be sniffing around, especially the Loki Familia and the Astraea Familia," the woman continued, her words dripping with disdain. "We should eliminate them as soon as possible, but make sure it's done secretly."
A knot formed in my stomach as I heard her mention our Familia specifically. They saw us as a threat, and they were planning to act against us in the shadows. It was a sobering realization that the danger was closer than I had thought.
Maryuu and I exchanged worried glances. We needed to report this crucial information to Alise immediately. These people were a danger not only to our Familia but to the entire city.
As we carefully retreated from the window, a loose piece of wood beneath my foot shifted, causing a small noise. My heart sank as the woman inside immediately reacted to the sound.
"Who goes there?!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with menace, causing me to hyperventilate.
While panicking, Maryuu quickly grabbed my hand and whispered, "Run..."
Without hesitation, we bolted from the abandoned warehouse, our footsteps echoing in the darkness. Unfortunately, the hooded followers poured out from the building, including the pink-haired woman.
"After them!!" the woman angrily yelled, commanding her followers to pursue us.
Fear and adrenaline surged through my veins as we raced through the empty streets, trying to put distance between us and the pursuers.
Maryuu and I had to be careful not to lead them back to our base, so we took a series of winding paths and narrow alleys. The path seemed to blur around us as we pushed ourselves to the limit.
As we glanced back, the hooded figures were still chasing us, their hositlity evident in their pursuit. My breaths came in ragged gasps, but I refused to let fear overcome me.
"Kiara, this way!" Maryuu shouted, leading me into a network of alleys and passages.
We twisted and turned, hoping to lose our pursuers in the maze-like city streets. The adrenaline fueled every step we took, our hearts pounding in our chests.
As we were about to reach the main street, one of the hooded followers lunged at me with a dagger in their hand.
"Die, adventurer!!" the hooded follower screamed, brandishing their weapon.
Before the dagger could reach me, someone intercepted the attack. "Not on my watch," Maryuu exclaimed as she parried the dagger with her mace and swung at the enemy.
With a swift and powerful strike, Maryuu knocked the hooded figure off balance, giving us enough time to make our escape. That is until more of them jumped in and blocked our escape route.
"Get behind me, Kiara!" Maryuu exclaimed as she raised her mace at the enemies.
Not wanting my companion to defend me on her own, I drew my sword and decided to help her fight the hooded assailants.
"No, I want to fight as well!" I cried out, my voice filled with determination.
Maryuu sighed, "Alright, stay close to me then."
With that being said, we faced our malevolent adversaries, determined to protect each other and the city we held dear.
-------------------------------------------------------------
As the hooded assailants cornered us from both sides, anxiety and fear enveloped me. My heart pounded in my chest, and the weight of my sword felt heavier than ever before.
One of the assailants sneered, their dagger glinting menacingly. "Looks like it's the end of the line for you."
I swallowed hard, trying to steady my trembling hands. Maryuu stood by my side, her mace at the ready, her presence a source of strength.
I couldn't let fear consume me. I had to protect myself and Maryuu. I took a deep breath, channeling my training and determination into my grip on the sword.
With a battle cry, I lunged forward, my blade meeting the attacker's dagger. Sparks flew as the metal clashed, and I pushed against the resistance with all my might.
Maryuu joined the fray, her mace striking down another hooded foe with calculated precision. Her skill was impressive, and I felt both awe and gratitude to have her as my ally.
The assailants weren't amateurs. They fought back with a fierce tenacity. My heart raced, and every fiber of my being focused on the dance of blades before me. Parrying their strikes, I searched for openings, trying to land a decisive blow.
Despite my determination, I couldn't ignore the voice in the back of my mind, reminding me of my relative inexperience in combat. Doubt threatened to creep in, but I pushed it away, knowing that I had to stand strong.
As the skirmish continued, I tried to keep my emotions in check. Fear had no place in battle, and I couldn't afford to lose myself to panic. My comrades were counting on me, and I couldn't let them down.
With every clash of metal, my confidence grew. I remembered Lady Astraea's words, reassuring me of my potential and my strength. This was my chance to prove that I could be a capable adventurer, even in the face of danger.
Time seemed to both slow and speed up as the battle raged on. My muscles ached with exertion, but I pushed through, determined to protect those I cared about.
Maryuu's voice broke through the chaos, calling out to me. "Kiara, behind you!"
I noticed the enemy behind me, so I tried to dodge out of the way. Unfortunately, my legs give out and I tripped to the ground, facing the enemy.
"Kiara!!" Maryuu screamed as I watched the hooded assailant about to plunge their dagger at me.
But then....
"Arcane Bolt!!"
A mysterious voice echoed throughout the alleyway, and a sudden bolt of energy struck the enemy at the chest, causing them to fall backward.
Everyone, including me, looked at the origin of the magic attack. There, a young figure with long golden hair was pointing a magic staff in our direction.
"Well, well, well, did I crash somebody's party?" said the newcomer with a light-hearted tone.
As the mysterious golden-haired adventurer appeared before us, we're left stunned, unsure if this new arrival was friend or foe.
