Dr. Yancy Yin

The man in the trench coat looks at me.

He's white, tall, and the lights above me flicker and I know just by that what he is.

"So you have quite the medical record."

I shrug.

"I've been lucky."

"There's luck and then there is curing over 70 cases of Leuemia, most of them children. In every case, not a single bit of the cancer was left… That's quite the record."

I felt a cold sweat as I felt the scalpel in my pocket.

"Like I said, I've been lucky."

"It's an amazing turnaround. You graduated near the bottom of your class in medical school, right?"

I frowned at the man.

"My mother was killed in a robbery, it affected my output at school."

Hand around it, my heart was beating faster.

"The lead suspect in that died in bizarre circumstances."

"Karma is a strange thing, sir."

I turned around and started walking away.

"They found his body in the river, a lot of people have drowned in that river."

"Yeah, Lake Michigan can be a dangerous place to swim."

"I can see it."

"See what?"

He looked at me.

"I know you made a deal with that thing."

I saw a gun, the security carmera wasn't on, I started running.

"Two of hearts."

Mass manipulation, I felt light as I ran up the stairs, the man following me. I got to the roof and he looked at me.

"We need to talk."

I looked at the roof and Jumped, I controlled my own personal gravity and I landed on the roof of the next building, and then heard something land next to me.

"You have any idea what you did?"

"I saved lives children and-"

A punch to my face, I moved with it but…

"You made a deal with an outsider."

Pain, I jumped up to escape but felt him slam me on the roof.

"Do you have any idea what you did?"

I choked.

"I saved 70 kids from Leukemia."

He froze and shook his head.

"Idiot."

I shifted my mass up and knocked him off me, jumping off the roof to the ground. I was close to water, to the river. I ran as he chased me and I recited the spell.

"Shiver my timbers, shiver my soul

Yo ho, heave ho

There are men whose hearts as black as coal

Yo ho, heave ho."

I felt that power return, the same as when I made those other two deals. The man chased me.

"And they sailed their ship 'cross the ocean blue

A bloodthirsty captain and a cutthroat crew.

It's as dark a tale as was ever told

Of the lust for treasure and the love of gold…"

I had to get to the water, if I finished the spell before I got there I'd be safe. I chanted it.

"Shiver my timbers, shiver my sides

Yo ho, heave ho

There are hungers as strong as the wind and tides

Yo ho, heave ho."

I started to hear drums, hear voices sing along instruments, and I knew I was getting closer to summoning him.

"And those buccaneers drowned their sins in rum

The devil himself would have to call them scum!

Every man on board would have killed his mate for a bag of

Guineas or a piece of eight, a piece of eight, a piece of eight

Five, six, seven, eight."

I heard it, my lungs burning as I recited the spell and I saw the water in the distance as I ran.

"Hulla wacka, ulla wacka, something not right

Many wicked, icky things gonna happen tonight

Hulla wacka, moola wacka, sailor man, beware."

The ground around us was covered in mist. I felt my heart pound as I ran towards the water to safety, to him.

"When de money in de ground, there's murder in the air,

Murder in the air."

I could see the pier, thank god my shitty hospital was so close to the water.

"One more time now."

I saw it in the distance, saw the ship, and heard the footsteps behind me.

"Shiver my timbers, shiver my bones

Yo ho, heave ho

There are secrets that sleep with old Davy Jones

Yo ho, heave ho."

I was so close to finishing it, finishing the spell. I just needed to get to the water.

"When the mainsail's set and the anchor's weighed

There's no turning back from any course that's laid

And when greed and villainy sail the sea,

You can bet your boots there'll be treachery."

I jumped into the water and landed and felt someone grab my lab coat.

"Shiver my timbers, shiver my sails

Dead men tell no tales!"

The world shifted and we landed on a wooden deck. A man looked at us, he was in a pirate outfit and walking towards us.

"Hello, Mr. Dresden! I've been expecting you."

The man looked around at the crew, I was safe.

"Davey Jones, I presume?"

The moonlight for a moment parted and his form turned ghostly.

"It's more a role than a name but yes."

He got up and pulled out a rod, the crew pulling out weapons.

"I kind of have problems with outsiders in my city, outsiders on my planet."

The man walked forward.

"If I only went to places where I was welcome I'd hardly be able to go anywhere."

He was in a combat stance.

"You've been killing innocent people in Chicago, Jones, and-"

My patron put up a hand.

"Not able to go on land."

"What?"

"Rules are rules, Mr. Dresden. I can sail on any body of water I want but I am not allowed on land, and those aren't the only rules."

The man locked eyes with him and frowned.

"A lot of innocent people have died recently."

My patron sat down.

"What's your definition of innocent?"

"What do you mean?"

"I mean what's your definition? Because the rules for me? An innocent person is a person who has never killed a human being and those are quite off-limits for me, except in cases of self-defense."

Jones snapped his finger and a table was brought out along with drinks.

"Really, that's innocent for you?"

"Yes, of course there is a difference between being just and innocent. You are for example not innocent but I can tell you are just. So I will refrain from trying to kill you."

He sat down.

"You killed people."

"I have killed quite a few killers, yes."

"When you kill a killer the number of killers remains the same."

My patron smiled.

"Then kill two."

His eye twitched.

"Looks like you're just starting out, Mr. Dresden? I am certain your banter skills will improve in time."
