Chapter 27: Dead Things

“Are you leaving too?” Lea asks when Alastair turns back to face her and Oliver. Alastair ignores her mockingly hopeful tone.

“Yes actually,” he begins. “We all might want to spend a few days away from here in case my parents have something nasty planned. Not to mention, my lie to him will read better if the place looks abandoned.”

Alastair pauses then continues.

“Not for the whole two weeks, but I’ll tell my father I shut you down and I’m not certain he won’t send someone to check. It’ll likely be safe again in a few days. Well, safer,” he admits shamefully.

His heart aches that they must be put through this. Unfortunately, as things stand, they don’t have much choice in the matter. Alastair hates that. He hates that they must be dragged along in his family's drama.

“It’s not fair that either of you have to do any of this,” he concedes apologetically, his expression riddled with guilt. To his surprise, Oliver laughs.
