Cora's heart sunk on hearing the words, she never in her lifetime ever thought of hearing those words, and never thought of them coming from Noah.
She knew Noah had interest in her, because at first it was something to do with her being a junior, then because he had seen her wearing normal clothes and saw her well proportioned body.
She thought Noah was obsessing over her because she was way above his class. That he would be a fool not to like her.
The furthest she would see it was Noah liking her, never had a dream where she heard him say the words. Because she would have seen through the dream.
Her heart didn't skip a beat when Noah revealed that he was in love with her, it completely shut down, and she had to fight for air.
Unable to control her breathing and heartbeat, Cora fainted.
She realized herself after thirteen minutes. By then, Noah was still on the phone waiting to hear her say the last words or perhaps end the phone call herself.
He wasn't sitting on the stairs anymore, he was by the bridge lost in his mind. He had said the words, he wished for a way to take it back and find another way to get her to understand that what they had was not nothing.
It's too late, the worst had happened, and now whatever Cora would say would determine what way forward would be.
He waited on the phone for her to say anything, he knew the worst would happen, she would tell him that he had broken the rules and there would be nothing between them anymore.
His tears had dried up, but fresh tears rolled down his face following the earlier stream; the cycle was never ending. He wasn't in control of his tears or heart for that matter, his heart was broken into sharp pieces which were cutting him inside.
He was bleeding inside, he had no hope anymore, because he knew Cora enough to know she is not one to act considerate. She talks her truth no matter what that might be.
"Then you have your answer Noah, I am glad I got to know you, the real you.
It's goodbye for now. " Cora's voice confirmed the worst.
Noah's heart sunk and he held on his chest making the passersby wonder what was happening to him.
Through the heartbreak, he found it in himself to say," I will always love you.
Bye for now, Cora. " After that, he heard her take deep breaths before ending the call
When Cora realized herself from fainting, she saw her phone on the floor next to her. Noah's number was on the screen and seconds were counting.
That's when she realized that whatever she had thought was happening in the dream was her new reality. The pain she felt fainting and coming back to life had nothing against the pain of her heart felt ending with Noah and wishing him goodbye.
She dropped her phone on the floor again after that, and tried letting a teardrop or two fall for the ending friendship. But her eyes denied her even that too. It was as if punishing her for it, because she knew she was to blame for calling the shots.
She also blamed Noah, she pushed the blame to him for being that foolish to fall in love with someone like herself. He should have known better.
She heard him tell that he will always love her, and not able to figure out what to say she hung up.
After that, she threw her phone across the room to which it hit the glass window, with both breaking into tiny pieces. It flew from her room and landed on the pavement.
She scanned for the bag he had brought food with and that met the same fate as the phone making the place smell and look like a rainbow.
By the time she was done, nothing in her vicinity was functioning. She had broken almost everything and some pieces had made damage to her arm, she was bleeding. She didn't feel pain from that, instead she just angrily tried to shed a tear, but still there was nothing.
Tears makes the pain less, but there were no tears for Cora, not today and never had been before. She had never felt like this before, because she had been excellent in preventing it from happening.
If she knew he loves her before it fell apart, maybe it would have ended differently, but it's too late for regrets.
Noah spent the whole night awake and silent, his roommate knew more than to force the details out of him, or remind Noah that he had warned him.
Cora didn't spend the night up like Noah did, she spent hers in Cate's apartment drinking from every bottle she saw in there. From sweet whiskey, sour champagne to vodka. Within an hour, she was already too drunk to walk, so she slept on the floor near the beer cabinet.
