Sam sat on the couch as he stared at the ceiling with dread in his eyes. The cold breeze enveloped the air around him, as Charlotte straightened out some flowers she held in her hand, and his bone-like wings fluttered in their apartment.
Although Charlotte hated his guts, she was still willing to stay in an apartment with him, for the sake of giving Siren his space as a father.
Deep down he knew he deserved this.
Being hated by his wife, and his son not even talking to him makes things even more awkward. It's not like he can't understand why they're mad, it makes perfect sense. What doesn't make sense, is that they don't even bother understanding the difficulties of trying to get here in the first place.
But he wasn't gonna bring it up, after all, his actions led to his child's death.
His firstborn daughter was dead because of him.
He killed his daughter and now he was gonna live with this for the rest of his life. Sam covered his forehead with his hand as he sighed heavily.
"Can our life get any worse?" He asked as he leaned his head over the couch towards Charlotte as she scoffed heavily.
"Of course they can. We still have Siren and our grandkids to look after. Losing them would easily make life worse." She said confidently as she brushed the flowers before sitting them down on the table.
"Besides, it's not like you care enough to stick around to find out." She said, her eyes lingering with resentment.
Sam gritted his teeth at her statement. "Oh, how ironic coming from you! You beat the living hell out of them for God knows how long and tried to kill them!"
Charlotte snapped back at him with an enraged look on her face, as her wings flared up, spreading wide across the living room. "You're putting all the blame on me? How dare you? I know what I did and even though I paid the price in hell, my heart will never forgive myself!"
The was a small pause between the two as the tense atmosphere kicked in. The sound of the broken AC was the only thing keeping the room from being dead silent as the two let out a sigh.
"Is it because you were tired of us? . . . Is that why you waited nearly a decade and a half to come back?" She asked, her wings folding onto her back as she spoke in a saddened tone, her eyes drooping with each passing second, as her tail wrapped around her scarred body.
Sam sighed, as he looked at his wedding ring and he rubbed his brown skin slowly, looking down at the poorly tiled floor.
"No. . . That's not the reason." He spoke.
Charlotte leaned up a little as she turned more of her body towards him, her red eyes flared as she looked at him with such tormented eyes. "Then why? What reason could you have for abandoning your family?" She cried out, her fangs accidentally being shown, as she covered her mouth.
There was another pause as she looked away from Sam.
He sighed heavily as he leaned in closely towards her, his hands pulling them away from her face as he held them tightly, looking into her eyes, with his dead black eyes.
"I... I didn't come back sooner, not because of you guys, but because I feared what I would've come back to. I was scared that if I came back, Siren would've been dead. And if I came back to him dead, I don't think I would've been the same person I was beforehand. Because that would mean that my son would've died because I wasn't smart enough to save him, and blood wouldn't have been on your hands. . . I would've been on mine." He said, his voice cracking under the cold pressure of reality as tears filled Charlotte's eyes.
This entire time she had only assumed that it was because of their family's life was the reason why he didn't come back. Her heart sank further into her chest as more tears leaked from her. Sam gently pulled her into a hug as he accepted her sorrowful tears.
Most knew her as the merciless warrior known today, but he knew that her heart was already crushed and pressured by the world, as he shed tears with her.
The two of them cried in each other's cold and warm embrace for the first time in nearly 17 years.
With a sniffled sigh, Charlotte laughed at this humorous situation they were put in.
"We are both horrible parents." She said.
Sam chuckled at the cold acknowledgment of their position as parents.
"Yup, some of the worst ever." He spoke.
A ring came from Charlotte's phone as she grabbed it on the counter, still hugging Sam tightly.
It was the orc that was at Siren's bar, a couple of weeks ago texting her.
"Hello, Mrs. Thompson! It's me Clockwork, and I wanted to talk to you and your husband about a certain mission me and your son had in mind. "
"Taking down a certain person in power." He texted.
Charlotte showed Sam the text as he chuckled at the request.
"I have been wanting to have a little ''chat'' with my old friend," Sam said as he leaned back on the couch.
"Damn straight. I'm gonna give that man hell for what he did to our son." Charlotte said
