Robert's heart leaped with joy, but he pretended to look deeply wronged instead, "How do I know whether what you said is true or false? You're the one who decides all of that!"
"Believe it or not!" She got angry, turned around, and had her back to him, "What do you think I am, like you, changing secretaries every few months? Fine, you're right, the child in my stomach isn't yours. Go find someone else to have a child with!"
"Look at you!" Robert was actually amused by her temper. He forcefully turned her head towards him and said, "I just said one thing and you replied with so much! Emma, I just wanted to ask you about your situation. I like you and that's why I care about you." He held her hand, but she wasn't pleased. She completely forgot that she was initially apologizing because she felt guilty towards Robert.
That's how love works: the more you care, the more you suffer. He knew that Emma was very selfish when it came to love.
