"Your bridge-burning skills haven't changed one bit." Martez glanced at the bedroom and suddenly asked, "Where's your family portrait?"
He wanted to see what her husband looked like, the man who had made her choose to have a child out of wedlock and leave her hometown to live abroad when she was still young.
According to his understanding of Kassidy, she was just a traditional girl. So when everyone said she had a child out of wedlock, he didn't believe it until he saw her holding the child himself.
His reaction at the time was to turn and walk away. If he had known that it would be the last time he saw Kassidy and that she would be gone for so many years, perhaps he would have tried to keep her by his side.
Unfortunately, life doesn't have that many what-ifs, and Kassidy had indeed left. She wasn't outstanding, and other than some gossip about her in the beginning, it disappeared from the city of Philadelphia just as she had.
