Chapter 2: Malaki Crescent

Two

Malaki Crescent

“So, is she pretty?” this came from my youngest brother, Jackson, or Jack as everyone called him. He said it the moment that I entered the pack frat house.

“Who?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“The human that Dawn swears is going to be your mate. Is she pretty?”

I sighed. “Jackson, you know that girl isn’t gong to be my mate. Dawn might have had visions about her being in our future but she’s been wrong before. My guess is, she’ll get seduced by a vampire within a week.”

“Dawn thinks you’re going to have kids,” Jackson reminded me, “and that would be a big deal since werewolves and humans usually can’t.”

Jackson was the charming brother. He was a freshman, blond haired, and blue eyed with a sunny personality to match. He was twins with my brother Milo, although they weren’t identical. I was always surprised Jackson hadn’t already found a mate given how cheery and outgoing he was. But I supposed that would happen in the next few years.

Me, on the other hand…I was fairly certain I had had a mate. Except my mate had been turned by vampires. And I didn’t think that I was going to get another one, let alone some little human nobody.

I snorted. “Dawn still believes unicorns are out there.”

“Yeah, well, Dawn’s great like that. Also, considering how much darkness we have in our lives, I don’t see why that’s such a bad thing. You still haven’t answered my question. Was the human girl pretty?”

I sighed, and thought back of the girl whose name I couldn’t remember. She had a round face, curly, brown hair, and hazel eyes. “I guess she’s pretty, for a human.”

Jackson snorted. “You are so snobby.”

“I had a mate,” I said, “and my mate was taken from me. I’m not looking for another one.”

“I think you’ve got to accept that Lisa wasn’t your soulmate. Her mate was a vampire. She’s gone. It’s time that you move on.”

I clenched my hands into fists. Part of me knew that he was right, but Lisa and me had grown up together. She was the first girl that I had ever loved. She also had sisters that had become luna’s for other packs, so it seemed so natural. But then, they’d gone to college, and she’d met a vampire.

A vampire whose name I didn’t even like saying. And now, they were together, and I had lost my best friend in the process of it all.

“It doesn’t work like that,” I said, “and anyway, you know how much trouble humans can be. Would you really want to deal with that?”

Jackson shrugged. “I don’t know. I just think you’ve been sad for a long time, bro. I mean, even if the girl isn’t your mate, maybe you could just have some fun and full around?”

I chuckled. “That’s not happening, Jack. But thanks for caring. Is everything for the welcome back party ready?”

“Sure, but the real question is are you ready? I’ve got condoms in my nightstand if you need them.”

I sighed. “Please go annoy someone else.”

“Hey!” This came from Jackson’s twin, Milo, who had just come down the stairs. “Explain to me why I got stuck with a mate that’s such a bitch. She’s decided that she’s not going to the party tonight.”

“What?” I raised an eyebrow. “Did she give you a good reason?”

Milo ran a hand through his jet-black hair. “No, but I’m 90% sure it’s because she’s sneaking out to see that human she’s best friends with. I don’t get why Celestina can’t accept this.”

“You know she wasn’t raised as a werewolf. She thought she was a human for the first seventeen years of her life. Her mom kept her from the pack because she was scared of her own mate. Obviously, it’s going to take time to adjust to the whole thing,” I told him.

Milo frowned. “We met when we were both in high school. She’s had time…my wolf wants her, and he wants her now. Hey, how’d the meeting go with the human girl?”

I blinked, thrown off by the question. “Weren’t we just talking about your love life?”

“Yeah man, but yours is way more interesting. Dawn thinks that little human girl that’s rooming with them is your soulmate, and that you’re going to have kids with her. Do you know how rare it is for werewolves and humans to have kids?”

I sighed. “I’m the future alpha of the Crescent pack. Yeah, I know. No, I don’t think she’s my mate.”

“Is she pretty?” Milo asked.

Jackson smirked. “I asked him the same thing. He’s being noncommittal about it all. It’s very annoying. Everyone knows that Dawn’s always right.”

I rolled my eyes. “Dawn is NOT always right. And don’t tell her that. I’ll never hear the end of it.”

Milo chuckled. “I’ll take the vague non answer and griping as a yes, she’s pretty. Excellent!” He clapped his hands together. “Things have been really dreary around here. We could use a wedding.”

I sighed, running my hands through my brown hair. “There’s not going to be a wedding.”

“And kids!” Jackson said. “Don’t forget, Dawn said there’d be kids. Think about how much trouble we could teach his pups.”

Milo grinned. “Oh, that’ll be fun. We’ll get to be the cool uncles.”

“I’m leaving now.” Which was exactly what I did, so I could get away from their nonsense.
