~Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin~
A young man, Will Carlton sits on the kitchen counter eating cereal while his father Bill Carlton is at the table reading the newspaper when a young girl Sophie Carlton comes through the room.
Sophie kisses her father on the cheek greeting him "Morning, Daddy."
"Morning, sweetheart." He says.
Sophie goes to get something out of the refrigerator and her brother makes fun of her.
"All these workouts, Soph, I don't know. Guys don't like buff girls." Will taunts his sister.
"Yeah, well, girls don't like guys who still live at home."
Will drains the milk from his cereal bowl and slides off the counter.
"Ha ha ha."
"Ha ha."
The siblings mock eachother
Bill issue a warning to his daughter as she exits the house."Be careful."
"I will."
Sophie stands on the dock, looking at the lake, her brother watches from a distance as she dives in. She swims and comes up for air, looking around and sees no one so she keeps swimming. She comes up for air again and looks around some more; still no one. Suddenly something approaches her from underwater and pulls her under, she fights but as her body is dragged underwater only bubbles can be seen nothing else.
~RESTAURANT~
A truck goes past a neon sign that says HOTEL, behind a building that says The Lynnwood INN. The Impala is parked in front.
There is a mostly empty plate in front of Dean, who is circling obituaries in a newspaper, Juliette is sitting next to her father eating pancakes with syrup covering her face and brown curls. Dean circles an obituary that reads:
CARLTON, SOPHIE -The Carlton family is sad to announce the death of their beloved daughter in a tragic swimming accident. Sophie Carlton, 18, was having her [...] Lake Manitoc WI, an [...] suddenly [...]
An attractive waitress, whose nametag says Wendy, approaches.
"Can I get you anything else?"
Dean looks up and grins around the pen he's chewing on.
He is interrupted by Sam coming over and sits down.
"Just the check, please."
"Okay."
Wendy walks away and Dean drops his head, then looks at Sam.
"You know, Sam, we are allowed to have fun once in a while."
He points to Wendy walking away and says "That's fun."
Sam looks at him then motions to Jules smirking "That's all the fun you should be thinking about. "
The five year old is finished eating but has managed to cover her face, hair and motorhead t-shirt in syrup.
"Oh kid, what did ya do, bathe in it?" Dean tickles her making the girl laugh.
Dean hands Sam the newspaper while he tries to clean up his daughter, thankfully parenthood has taught him to walk with a backpack anywhere he goes that has wet wipe, hair stuff, a change of clothes and stuff to keep her entertained.
"Here, take a look at this, I think I got one. Lake Manitoc, Wisconsin. Last week Sophie Carlton, eighteen, walks into the lake, doesn't walk out. Authorities dragged the water; nothing. Sophie Carlton is the third Lake Manitoc drowning this year. None of the other bodies were found either. They had a funeral two days ago."
"A funeral?" Sam wonders.
"Yeah, it's weird, they buried an empty coffin. For, uh, closure or whatever. There you go bug all clean." Dean smiles at his kid.
"Closure? What closure? People don't just disappear, Dean. Other people just stop looking for them."
"Something you want to say to me?"
"The trail for Dad. It's getting colder every day."
"Exactly. So what are we supposed to do?"
"I don't know. Something. Anything." Sam argues.
"You know what? I'm sick of this attitude. You don't think I wanna find Dad as much as you do?" Dean asks exasperated.
"Yeah, I know you do, it's just.." Sam begins to say but is cut off.
"I'm the one that's been with him every single day for the past two years, while you've been off to college going to pep rallies. We will find Dad, but until then, we're gonna kill everything bad between here and there. Okay?"
Sam rolls his eyes. The waitress walks by, distracting Dean. "All right, Lake Manitoc. Hey!"
Dean returns his attention to Sam.
"Huh?"
"How far?"
~LAKE MANITOC, CARLTON HOUSE ~
The Impala pulls up in front of the Carlton house.
"Okay bug I think it's best if you wait in the car okay? We wouldn't be long." Dean explains to Jules.
"Okay daddy. Can I have pie."
Sam laughs at her question, it seems the love for pie is shared between both father and daughter.
"Of course. I love me some pie."
The brothers exit the car and Dean turns to see Jules playing with her ladybug, he knocks on the door and it is opened by Will Carlton.
"Will Carlton?"
"Yeah, that's right."
"I'm Agent Ford. This is Agent Hamill." Dean says. "We're with the US Wildlife Service." He holds up an ID.
Bill Carlton is sitting on a bench on the dock. Will brings Sam and Dean around to see him.
"She was about a hundred yards out. That's where she got dragged down." Will explains.
"And you're sure she didn't just drown?" Dean questions.
"Yeah. She was a varsity swimmer. She practically grew up in that lake. She was as safe out there as in her own bathtub."
"So no splashing? No signs of distress?" Sam asks.
"No, that's what I'm telling you." Will replies.
"Did you see any shadows in the water? Maybe some dark shape breach the surface?"
"No. Again, she was really far out there."
"You ever see any strange tracks by the shoreline?" Dean asks.
"No, never. Why? Why, what do you think's out there?" Will wonders.
"We'll let you know as soon as we do." Dean says and turns to head back to the car.
"What about your father?" Sam asks making Dean stop and turn back. "Can we talk to him?"
Will turns to look at his father, then turns back.
"Look, if you don't mind, I mean...he didn't see anything and he's kind of been through a lot."
"We understand."
Sam and Dean go to the car where Jules is playing with the teddy bear Dean got her after the Wendigo incident.
Dean turns around to see her glaring at him as they enter the car "What's that look for bug?"
"You forgot the password."
Sam breaks out laughing as the duo stare at each other with matching expressions.
Sighing Dean says "Impala 67."
The girl finally smiles "Can we get pie now."
~POLICE STATION~
Sheriff Jake Devins talks to Sam and Dean in the station.
"Now, I'm sorry, but why does the Wildlife Service care about an accidental drowning?" He asks confused. "If you don't mind me asking why do you have a child with you."
"You sure it's accidental? Will Carlton saw something grab his sister." Sam asks.
"And the kid is my daughter, it's a bit difficult finding a babysitter on such short notice." Dean explains
Jake allows Dean to leave Jules outside his office where he can keep an eye on her. They walk into the Sheriffs' office and Jake motions to chairs in front of his desk.
"Here, sit, please. There are no indigenous carnivores in that lake."
Sam and Dean sit as Jake continues to explain.
"There's nothing even big enough to pull down a person, unless it was the Loch Ness Monster."
"Yeah." Dean laughs. "Right."
Sam glances at his brother.
"Will Carlton was traumatized, and sometimes the mind plays tricks. We dragged that entire lake. We even ran a sonar sweep, just to be sure, and there was nothing down there." Jake sits at his desk.
"That's weird, though, I mean, that's, that's the third missing body this year."
"I know. These are people from my town. These are people I care about."
"I know." Dean says.
"Anyway..." Jake sighs. "All this...it won't be a problem much longer."
"What do you mean?" Dean's confused.
"Well, the dam, of course."
"Of course, the dam. It's, uh, it sprung a leak."
"It's falling apart, and the feds won't give us the grant to repair it, so they've opened the spillway. In another six months, there won't be much of a lake. There won't be much of a town, either. But as Federal Wildlife, you already knew that." Jake tells the men.
"Exactly."
The conversation is interrupted by a young woman who taps on the door.
"Sorry, am I interrupting? I can come back later." She wonders.
"Gentlemen, this is my daughter."
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Dean." Dean jumps into the conversation and shakes her hand.
"Andrea Barr. Hi."
"Hi."
"They're from the Wildlife Service. About the lake." Jake tells his daughter.
"Oh."
Just then a little boy walk around Andrea.
"Oh, hey there. What's your name?" Dean asks.
The boy walks away without speaking his mother follows.
"His name is Lucas."
Lucas and Andrea are in the main room, Andrea gives him some crayons out of a box when she notices Juliette.
"Hi there sweetie." Andrea says to the girl.
"Hi" Jules says waving to her and Andrea returns it.
She offers Jules some crayons and a piece of paper and watches over both kids as they color in silence.
"Is he okay?" Sam wonders as the mother and son leave.
"My grandson's been through a lot. We all have."
Jake stands and goes to the office door. "Well, if there's anything else I can do for you, please let me know."
Dean, Sam, and Jake leave the office.
"Thanks. You know, now that you mentioned it, could you point us in the direction of a reasonably priced motel?" Dean asks.
"Lakefront Motel. Go around the corner. It's about two blocks south." Andrea says.
"Two...would you mind showing us?"
Andrea laughs. "You want me to walk you two blocks?"
"Not if it's any trouble."
"I'm headed that way anyway."
Andrea turns to Jake. "I'll be back to pick up Lucas at three."
"Daddy, look, I made you this." Jules says running over to her father.
Dean kneels down and welcomes the little girl into his arms. "Wow bug that's amazing."
"Thank you for letting me borrow your crayons." Jules says to Lucas but the boy doesn't look up from his drawing, so she hands it back to his mother.
"Oh...I didn't realize she was yours." Andrea says to Dean.
He lift Jules into his arms. " Yeah this is Juliette. "
After being properly introduced Andrea turns to Lucas.
"We'll go to the park, okay, sweetie?" She kisses Lucas on the head.
Dean waves as they leave and Jake nods.
"Thanks again." Sam says.
Outside on the street Andrea is leading the three Winchesters to the motel.
"So, cute kid." Dean says.
"Thanks. Yours is cute too." Andrea replies.
"Kids are the best, huh?"
Andrea glances at him and ignores him. They keep walking until they stop in front of a building that says LAKEFRONT MOTEL.
"There it is. Like I said, two blocks." She says.
"Thanks." Sam says.
Andrea turns to address Dean.
"Must be hard, with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pickup line."
She leaves, calling back over her shoulder.
"Enjoy your stay!"
Sam burstsout laughing "'Kids are the best'? You don't even like kids."
"I love kids."
"Name three children that you even know. Excluding your daughter. "
Dean thinks and comes up empty. Sam waves a hand and takes a giggling Jules into his arms and walks into the motel leaving Dean scratching his head still standing on the sidewalk.
"I'm thinking!" He defends.
~MOTEL~
Sam is working on his laptop, while Dean is going through his clothing, Jules is helping him by trying to fold his clothes, key word try but Dean doesn't mind.
"So there's the three drowning victims this year." Sam says
"Any before that?"
"Uh, yeah."
Sam has a browser window open to The Lake Manitoc Tribune. DROWNING TAINTS ICE FISHING FESTIVAL. He clicks, and another browser window comes up, again the Tribune: 12-YEAR-OLD GIRL DROWNS IN LAKE, Second drowning in 6 months at Lake Manitoc
"Six more spread out over the past thirty-five years. Those bodies were never recovered either. If there is something out there, it's picking up its pace."
Dean abandons his clothing onto a bed and walks over to his brother.
"So, what, we got a lake monster on a binge?" He asks.
"This whole lake monster theory, it, it just bugs me." Sam replies.
"Why?"
"Loch Ness, uh, Lake Champlain, there are literally hundreds of eyewitness accounts, but here, almost nothing." Sam says looking at the Tribune homepage. "Whatever it is out there, no one's living to talk about it."
He scrolls to the comments section of an article when something catches Deans' eye.
"Wait, Barr, Christopher Barr. Where have I heard that name before?"
Sam reads "Christopher Barr, the victim in May."
Clicking a link, he opens a new page. LOCAL MAN IN TRAGIC ACCIDENT. The picture loads and it shows a police officer with Lucas, the young boy from the station..
"Oh. Christopher Barr was Andrea's husband, Lucas's father. Apparently he took Lucas out swimming. Lucas was on a floating wooden platform when Chris drowned. Two hours before the kid got rescued." He clicks the picture for a better look, then scratches his head. "Maybe we have an eyewitness after all."
"No wonder that kid was so freaked out. Watching one of your parents die isn't something you just get over." Dean says looking over at his daughter who is attempting to fold his clothes but ends up making a mess.
~PARK~
The sight and sounds of kids laughing and playing can be hear as Andrea sits on a bench and watches Lucas, who is at another bench coloring and playing with toy soldiers.
"Can we join you?" A voice is heard. She looks up and sees the three Winchesters.
"I'm here with my son." She informs them.
Dean looks over at Lucas. "Oh. Mind if I say hi?"
He walks over with Juliette in is arms.
"Tell your friend this whole Jerry Maguire thing is not gonna work on me." Andrea says to Sam as he sits next to her.
"I don't think that's what this is about." He replies.
Dean and Juliette approach Lucas "How's it going?"
He kneels down next to the bench where the boy is coloring and when Lucas doesn't even look up, Dean picks up one of the toy soldiers.
"Oh, I used to love these things." Dean says showing it to his daughter and imitating and explosions, then tosses the toy soldier down.
"So crayons is more your thing? That's cool. Chicks dig artists."
Lucas has a pile of drawings on the bench and Dean takes a look. The top one is of a big black swirl, the second one is of a red bicycle.
"Hey, these are pretty good. You mind if my daughter and I sit and draw with you for a while?"
Dean picks up a crayon for them both. "I'm not so bad myself."
He sits on the bench, picks up a pad of paper, and starts drawing.
"You know, I'm thinking you can hear me, you just don't want to talk. I don't know exactly what happened to your dad, but I know it was something real bad. I think I know how you feel. When I was your age, I saw something." He pauses and looks at his daughter who is busy drawing before continuing "Anyway. Well, maybe you don't think anyone will listen to you, or, uh...or believe you. I want you to know that I will. You don't even have to say anything. You could draw me a picture about what you saw that day, with your dad, on the lake. Okay, no problem. This is for you.'
Dean holds out to Lucas the picture he drew it's stick figures.
"This is my family. That's my dad. That's my mom. That's my geek brother, that's me and that's my babygirl Jules." He says pointing to each person. "All right, so I'm a sucky artist. I'll see you around, Lucas. Let's go bug."
Dean picks up Juliette who is showing him her picture, she plans to give it to her pop pop and heads back to Sam and Andrea. At the bench Lucas picks up the picture.
Dean approaches them. When she hears Andrea say
"Lucas hasn't said a word, not even to me. Not since his dad's accident."
"Yeah, we heard. Sorry."
"What are the doctors saying?" Sam questions.
"That it's a kind of post-traumatic stress."
"That can't be easy. For either of you."
"We moved in with my dad. He helps out a lot. It's just...when I think about what Lucas went through, what he saw..."
"Kids are strong. You'd be surprised what they can deal with." Dean encourages her.
"You know, he used to have such life. He was hard to keep up with, to tell you the truth. Now he just sits there. Drawing those pictures, playing with those army men. I just wish..." She is cut off by Lucas walking over.
"Hey sweetie." His mom says.
Lucas ignores everyone and hands Dean a picture.
"Thanks. Thanks, Lucas."
Looking at it he can see it's a picture of the Carlton house.
~CARLTON HOUSE~
BILL is sitting in a chair, doing nothing as his son Will approaches.
"Hey, Dad? You, you should probably eat something. I'm gonna make some dinner, okay?"
Bill says nothing and turns his head away.
In the kitchen Will washes a fish at the sink. He does not turn the water off when he begins cutting up the fish when suddenly the water turns brown. Will notices and shuts off the water but Black water comes up through the drain and fills the sink. He rolls up his sleeve to pull the plug out of the drain. Even as he comes up with the plug, the water doesn't drain. He sticks his arm back in the water, and something grabs it, pulling him into the sink he young man fight but ultimately drowns and the water drains, leaving his body in an empty sink.
~MOTEL~
Dean is inside the motel room sitting on a bed having just put Jules down for her nap when Sam opens the door and comes in. Dean immediately gestures for him to be quiet.
"So, I think it's safe to say we can rule out Nessie."
"What do you mean?" Dean asks as Sam sits on the bed opposite him.
"I just drove past the Carlton house. There was an ambulance there. Will Carlton is dead." Sam reports.
"He drowned?"
"Yep. In the sink."
Dean looks dumbfounded "What the hell? So you're right, this isn't a creature. We're dealing with something else."
"Yeah, but what?" Sam questions.
"I don't know. Water wraith, maybe? Some kind of demon? I mean, something that controls water...water that comes from the same source."
"The lake."
"Yeah."
"Which would explain why it's upping the body count. The lake is draining. It'll be dry in a few months. Whatever this thing is, whatever it wants, it's running out of time." Sam theorizes.
"And if it can get through the pipes, it can get to anyone, almost anywhere."
Dean stands up and moves to a chair "This is gonna happen again soon."
"And we do know one other thing for sure. We know this has got something to do with Bill Carlton."
"Yeah, it took both his kids."
"And I've been asking around. Lucas's dad, Chris—Bill Carlton's godson." Sam informs his brother.
"Let's go pay Mr. Carlton a visit."
~LAKE~
Bill Carlton is sitting on the bench on the dock when he hears a voice ask "Mr. Carlton?"
He looks up. Sam and Dean approach.
"We'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind."
"We're from the, the Department..." Dean starts to say but i cut off by Mr. Carlton.
"I don't care who you're with. I've answered enough questions today."
"Your son said he saw something in that lake. What about you? You ever see anything out there? Mr. Carlton, Sophie's drowning and Will's death—we think there might be a connection to you or your family." Sam says.
"My children are gone. It's...it's worse than dying. Go away. Please."
Sam and Dean head back to the car.
"What do you think?" Sam asks his brother.
"Aw, I think the poor guy's been through hell. I also think he's not telling us something."
Sam leans on the Impala. "So now what?"
His question goes unanswered as Dean goes still.
"What is it?"
"Huh." Dean replies looking at the Carlton house. "Maybe Bill's not the only one who knows something."
Dean pulls out the picture Lucas brought him, which is of the Carlton house and looks at Sam.
~BARR HOUSE~
Andrea's voice can be heard "Sorry, but I don't think it's a good idea."
"I just need to talk to him." Dean says.
The brothers are inside Andrea's house, talking to her. They chose to leave Jules in the car since the child is still asleep, Dean is thankful his daughter sleeps like the dead.
"Just for a few minutes." Dean pleds.
"He won't say anything. What good's it gonna do?"
"Andrea, we think more people might get hurt. We think something's happening out there." Sam tries to reason with her.
"My husband, the others, they just drowned. That's all."
"If that's what you really believe, then we'll go. But if you think there's even a possibility that something else could be going on here, please let me talk to your son." Dean begs.
In his room Lucas is coloring, toy soldiers standing around him as Dean, Andrea, and Sam approach the doorway. Dean enters and crouches down by Lucas.
"Hey, Lucas. You remember me?" He asks but receives no reply. "You know, I, uh, I wanted to thank you for that last drawing. But the thing is, I need your help again."
Lucas continues to draw, this time it's a drawing of a person in water. Dean opens the house picture and puts it down in front of Lucas.
"How did you know to draw this? Did you know something bad was gonna happen? Maybe you could nod yes or no for me." Again the child continues to keep coloring.
"You're scared. It's okay. I understand. See, when I was your age, I saw something real bad happen to my mom, and I was scared, too. I didn't feel like talking, just like you. But see, my mom—I know she wanted me to be brave. I think about that every day. And I do my best to be brave. And maybe, your dad wants you to be brave too."
Suddenly the boy drops his crayon and looks up at Dean. He hands a picture of a white church, a yellow house, and a boy with a blue baseball cap and red bicycle in front of a wooden fence.
"Thanks, Lucas." The older man says as they leave.
Dean and Sam are in the Impala, while Sam examine the church picture.
"Andrea said the kid never drew like that till his dad died." Dean says turning around to check on Jules who will awaken an minute now.
"There are cases—going through a traumatic experience could make people more sensitive to premonitions, psychic tendencies."
"Whatever's out there, what if Lucas is tapping into it somehow? I mean, it's only a matter of time before somebody else drowns, so if you got a better lead, please."
"All right, we got another house to find." Sam says.
"The only problem is there's about a thousand yellow two-stories in this county alone." Dean tells him.
Looking at the picture Sam says "See this church? I bet there's less than a thousand of those around here."
"Oh, College Boy thinks he's so smart." Dean jokes.
"You know, um...What you said about Mom...You never told me that before."
"It's no big deal." Dean claims. "Oh God, we're not gonna have to hug or anything, are we?"
Thankfully the moment is broken by Juliette waking up.
"Hey bug you have a nice nap?" Dean asks his daughter as he starts the car.
"Yeah but I'm hungry." She says.
"Don't worry we'll get some lunch soon but first wanna go house hunting." He grins at her.
The brothers laugh as the sound of excited cheers can be heard from the backseat.
~SWEENEY HOUSE~
The three Winchesters approach a white church shaped like the one in Lucas's picture. Dean holds up the picture and looks at it, comparing it to the scene in front of him; there's a yellow house next to the church and a wooden fence near the house. Sam, who is carrying Juliette looks at Dean and they both look up at the church and cross the street to the house.
Knocking on the door they are greeted by an elderly woman who invites them in.
"We're sorry to bother you, ma'am but does a little boy live here, by chance? He might wear a blue ball cap, has a red bicycle."
"No sir. Not for a very long time. Peter's been gone for thirty-five years now." The woman, Mrs. Sweeney says. "The police never...I never had any idea what happened. He just disappeared."
Sam points out to Dean a number of toy soldiers on a table.
"Losing him—you know, it's...it's worse than dying."
"Did he disappear from here? I mean, from this house?" Dean asks.
"He was supposed to ride his bike straight home after school, and he never showed up." The woman tells him.
Dean picks a picture off the mirror. There are two boys in the picture, one is Peter with a bicycle and Dean reads from the back of the picture.
"Peter Sweeney and Billy Carlton, nineteen seventy." Dean says. "Thank you ma'am"
They boys turn to leave with Mrs. Sweeney following.
"Is that your daughter Agent?" She questions.
"Yes ma'am, she is." Dean replies now holding hands with his child as she walks.
"I can see the resemblance. Keep an eye on her, you never know what may happen." She warns.
Dean just nods and picks his daughter up as they leave. Juliette waves goodbye to the woman. Her words strike Dean hard, as he imagines the pain she must feel from loosing her only child and his arms wrap tighter around the girl.
Back outside Dean is driving.
"Okay, this little boy Peter Sweeney vanishes, and this is all connected to Bill Carlton somehow." Sam questions.
"Yeah, Bill sure as hell seems to be hiding something, huh?"
"And Bill, the people he loves, they're all getting punished."
"So what if Bill did something to Peter?" Dean wonders.
"What if Bill killed him?" Sam asks.
"Peter's spirit would be furious. It'd want revenge. It's possible"
The Impala pulls up in front of the Carlton house and Sam and Dean approach the house. Dean leaves Jules in the car with some music to keep her entertained.
"Mr. Carlton?" Sam calls.
They are met with silence when suddenly the sound of an engine roars.
They go around the house to see Bill going out on the lake in his boat.
"Hey, check it out."
They run to the end of the dock, yelling.
"Mr. Carlton! You need to come back! Come out of the water! Turn the boat around!" Dean yells
"Mr. Carlton!" Sam calls out but Bill ignores them and keeps going. The water rises up and flips Bill's boat over. It and he vanish.
~POLICE STATION~
Lucas is sitting in a chair, rocking back and forth as his mother is sitting next to him, holding a paper bag and a plastic container.
"Baby, what's wrong?"
Just then Sam, Dean, Juliette and Jake walk in the door causing Andrea to look over.
"Sam, Dean." She stands up, putting the bag and container on her chair. "I didn't expect to see you here."
"So now you're on a first-name basis. What are you doing here?" Jake asks his daughter.
"I brought you dinner."
"I'm sorry, sweetheart, I don't really have the time."
"I heard about Bill Carlton. Is it true? Is something going on with the lake?" Andrea asks her father.
"Right now we don't know what the truth is. But I think it might be better if you and Lucas went on home."
Lucas looks up and whines, looking stricken; he jumps up and grabs Dean's arm that isn't holding his child.
"Lucas, hey, what is it? Lucas."
"Lucas." Andrea calls out.
"Lucas, it's okay. It's okay. Hey, Lucas, it's okay. It's okay." Dean tries to calm the child.
Andrea pulls Lucas away from Dean and leads him outside but Lucas doesn't look away from Dean.
Jake throws down his jacket and goes into his office. Sam and Dean follow.
"Okay, just so I'm clear, you see...something attack Bill's boat, sending Bill—who is a very good swimmer, by the way—into the drink, and you never see him again?"
Dean glances at Sam and says "Yeah, that about sums it up."
"And I'm supposed to believe this, even though I've already sonar-swept that entire lake? And what you're describing is impossible? And you're not really Wildlife Service?" Jake accuses.
Dean's look surprise gives it away as Jake says
"That's right, I checked. Department's never heard of you two."
"See, now, we can explain that." He tries to say
"Enough. Please. The only reason you're breathing free air is one of Bill's neighbors saw him steering out that boat just before you did. So, we have a couple of options here. I can arrest you for impersonating government officials and hold you as material witnesses to Bill Carlton's disappearance. Or, we can chalk this all up to a bad day, you get into your car, you put this town in your rearview mirror, and you don't ever darken my doorstep again."
"Door number two sounds good." Sam answers.
"That's the one I'd pick." Jake says.
~IMPALA~
Dean, Sam and Jules are in the Impala, waiting at a traffic light. A sign says I-43 North to Milwaukee is to the left. The light turns green but the Impala doesn't move.
"Green." Sam says.
"What?"
"Light's green."
However Dean turns right. "Uh, the interstate's the other way." Pointing the other direction.
"I know." Dean says.
"But Dean, this job, I think it's over."
"I'm not so sure."
"If Bill murdered Peter Sweeney and Peter's spirit got its revenge, case closed. The spirit should be at rest." Sam tries to reason with his brother.
"All right, so what if we take off and this thing isn't done? You know, what if we've missed something? What if more people get hurt?"
"But why would you think that?" Sam asks.
"Because Lucas was really scared." Dean says.
"That's what this is about?"
"I just don't want to leave this town until I know the kid's okay."
"Who are you? And what have you done with my brother?"
Dean just glances at Sam and tells him to shut up.
"Daddy?" A voice asks.
"Yeah Jules?"
"Is Lucas gonna be okay?"
"Don't worry bug, we'll make sure he is." Dean promises his daughter.
~BARR HOUSE~
~IN THE BATHROOM~
The bathtub is mostly full and Andrea tests the water with one hand. Finding it the right temperature she takes off her robe and gets in the water. She leans back, grabs a washcloth, and closes her eyes. The water coming out of the faucet turns brown as Andrea starts washing herself with the cloth, then opens her eyes. The water is entirely brown now. She screams and tries to get out of the tub, but something drags her down.
Meanwhile in the hallway Lucas is awake and pounding on the bathroom door.
Inside the bathroom Andrea's head is pulled under the water. She pulls it out, then is pulled under again; lather, rinse, repeat. Lucas keeps pounding as his mother is pulled under one last time.
Outside the impala pulls up and the three exit the vehicle.
"Are you sure about this? It's pretty late, man." Sam says.
Dean ignores him and rings the doorbell. At that moment, Lucas opens the door, desperately afraid.
"Lucas? Lucas!" Dean calls.
The boy takes off and they follow him to upstairs. Water is pouring out from under the bathroom door and down the stairs. Lucas starts pounding on the bathroom door again but Dean pushes him over to Sam and kicks in the door. Both kids now terrified grabs Dean, so Sam runs into the bathroom and sticks his arms in the tub, trying to pull Andrea out. She is pulled back under, but Sam keeps pulling until she is all the way out and starts coughing up water.
Dawn is breaking as everyone sits in the living room. Andrea is dry and wearing comfortable clothing.
"Can you tell me?" Sam asks gently.
"No."
Dean is looking through notebooks on bookshelves.
"It doesn't make any sense." Andrea says crying. "I'm going crazy." She puts her face in her hands.
"No, you're not. Tell me what happened. Everything."
"I heard...I thought I heard...there was this voice."
"What did it say?" Sam inquires.
"It said...it said 'come play with me'." Andrea recounts sobbing. "What's happening?"
Dean pulls out a scrapbook that says "Jake – 12 years old" and opens it, flipping pages. He closes it again and goes to Sam and Andrea. He puts the book down in front of Andrea and opens it to a picture of Explorer Troop 37.
"Do you recognize the kids in these pictures?" Dean asks.
"What? Um, um, no. I mean, except that's my dad right there. He must have been about twelve in these pictures."
She moves her finger over to another picture of Jake as a child; he is standing next to Peter. Dean looks at Sam.
"Chris Barr's drowning. The connection wasn't to Bill Carlton. It must have been to the sheriff." Dean realizes.
"Bill and the sheriff—they were both involved with Peter." Sam says.
"What about Chris? My dad—what are you talking about?"
Dean looks sideways. "Lucas?"
Lucas is staring out the window with Juliette next to him looking worried.
"Lucas, what is it?" Dean asks.
The boy opens the door and walks outside and everyone follows.
"Lucas, honey?" His mother call.
Lucas stops and looks at the ground, then at Dean.
You and Lucas get back to the house and stay there, okay? Take Jules with you please."
Andrea pulls the children back to the house as Dean and Sam presumably fetch shovels from the Impala, before they start digging. After a while Sam's shovel clanks against something. They dig with their hands and pull out a red bicycle.
"Peter's bike." Sam states.
"Who are you?" A voice asks.
Sam and Dean turn around and see JAKE standing there pointing a gun at them.
"Put the gun down, Jake." Sam tells him as the brothers drop their shovels.
"How did you know that was there?" Jake demands.
"What happened? You and Bill killed Peter, drowned him in the lake and then buried the bike? You can't bury the truth, Jake. Nothing stays buried." Dean tells him.
Andrea sees Jake with the gun aimed at Sam and Dean. She turns to the kids.
"Go to your room, sweetie. Now. Lock the door and wait for me. Don't come out. Juliette go with him."
The children run off as Andrea goes outside.
"I don't know what the hell you're talking about."
"You and Bill killed Peter Sweeney thirty-five years ago. That's what the hell I'm talking about."
Andrea runs up and calls to her father. "Dad."
"And now you got one seriously pissed-off spirit." Dean says.
"It's gonna take Andrea, Lucas, everyone you love. It's gonna drown them. And it's gonna drag their bodies God knows where, so you can feel the same pain Peter's mom felt. And then, after that, it's gonna take you, and it's not gonna stop until it does." Sam continues.
"Yeah, and how do you know that?" Jake wonders
"Because that's exactly what it did to Bill Carlton." Sam tells him.
"Listen to yourselves, both of you. You're insane."
"I don't really give a rat's ass what you think of us. But if we're gonna bring down this spirit, we need to find the remains, salt them, and burn them into dust. Now tell me you buried Peter somewhere. Tell me you didn't just let him go in the lake." Dean asks.
Inside the house both children watch as the four adults are in a stand off. When suddenly a voice is heard.
"Come play with me."
Lucas follows the voice.
"Lucas where are you going? Lucas?" Juliette calls as the boy goes outside and decides to follow him.
"Dad, is any of this true?" Andrea asks.
"No. Don't listen to them. They're liars and they're dangerous."
"Something tried to drown me. Chris died on that lake. Dad, look at me."
Jake does as Andrea asks "Tell me you...you didn't kill anyone."
Jake just looks away.
"Oh my God." The woman says.
"Billy and I were at the lake. Peter was the smallest one. We always bullied him, but this time, it got rough. We were holding his head under the water. We didn't mean to. But we held him under too long and he drowned. We let the body go, and it sank." Jake confesses
Dean glances at Sam.
"Oh, Andrea, we were kids. We were so scared. It was a mistake. But, Andrea, to say that I have anything to do with these drownings, with Chris, because of some ghost? It's not rational." Jake says.
"All right, listen to me, all of you. We need to get you away from this lake, as far as we can, right now." Dean tells them.
Andrea turns her head and spots Lucas and Juliette going down to the lake. She gasps.
"Lucas!"
"Juliette "
They all run up to the dock. Lucas is leaning over the side, reaching for a toy soldier in the water as Juliette holds his arm trying to pull him back.
"Come play with me."
"Lucas! Juliette!" Dean shouts.
"Kids stay where you are!" Andrea calls out.
A hand comes up and pulls Lucas into the water and because Jules was holding on to him she is pulled in as well. The adults have reached the edge of the lake and Jake stops. Peter's head is visible. Dean and Sam keep running to the end of the dock and dive in.
"Oh my God!" Andrea cries out.
She takes off her jacket to jump in but Sam stops her "Andrea, stay there!"
"No! Lucas!"
"We'll get him! Just stay on the dock!"
Sam dives under again. Dean comes up. A minute later, so does Sam.
"Sam?"
Sam shakes his head.
"Lucas, where are you?" Andrea cries out.
Jake takes off his jacket as Sam and Dean dive back down and wades in. Andrea looks over.
"Peter, if you can hear me...please, Peter, I'm sorry. I'm so—I'm so sorry." Jake begs.
"Daddy, no!"
"Peter. They are just children. Please, it's not their fault, it's mine. Please take me."
Dean and Sam come up for air.
"Jake, no!" Dean calls out.
Suddenly Peter surfaces.
"Just let it be over!" Jake says as he is dragged down.
"Daddy! Daddy! No!"
Dean and Sam dive down again.
Sam surfaces a few seconds later with Juliette in his arms, followed closely by Dean holding Lucas, both children aren't moving.
Both children are pulled onto the dock as their respective parent holds them. Not long after Lucas starts coughing up water and Andrea let's out a sigh of relief hugging him. However, Dean is not so lucky as Juliette is still unresponsive.
"Come on bug." He pleads. Suddenly she jumps up coughing and the brother are relieved. Dean hugs his child tightly as both father and daughter cry.
Dean, Sam and Juliette walk out of the motel and Dean opens the car door to place Jules in her car seat whule5 Sam tosses a duffel in.
"Look, we're not gonna save everybody." Sam tells him.
"I know."
"Sam, Dean." The guys turn around and see Andrea walking up with Lucas.
"Hey."
"We're glad we caught you. We just, um, we made you lunch for the road." She says gesturing to Lucas who is holding a tray of sandwiches. "Lucas insisted on making the sandwiches himself."
"Can I give it to them now?" Lucas asks his mom.
"Of course." She smiles and kisses his head.
"Come on, Lucas, let's load this into the car." Dean tells him
"How you holding up?" Sam ask her
"It's just gonna take a long time to sort through everything, you know?"
Sam sighs. "Andrea, I'm sorry."
The woman just shakes her head. "You saved my son. I can't ask for more than that. Dad loved me. He loved Lucas. No matter what he did, I just have to hold on to that."
Dean puts the sandwiches in the car. " Those are for us to share bug not you only. All right, if you're gonna be talking now, this is a very important phrase, so I want you to repeat it one more time." Dean says turning to the boy.
"Zeppelin rules!"
"That's right. Up high."
Dean holds his hand up for a high-five. Lucas obliges, grinning.
"You take care of your mom, okay?"
"All right."
Andrea comes up and kisses Dean.
"Thank you."
Dean pauses for a minute, then scratches his head and goes around the car.
"Sam, move your ass. We're gonna run out of daylight before we hit the road."
Dean gets in the car, then Sam.
"Bye Andrea, Bye Lucas." Jules waves to them as her dad drives off.
Later that night Dean is still driving while Jules is asleep in her carseat and Sam is looking through John's journal. The only sound that can be heard is the soft noise of the radio. Suddenly the silence is broken by Dean's phone, the caller ID says Bobby.
"Hey Bobby, whats up?" Dean asks.
"Don't you what's up me ya idjit. You almost got my grand baby drowned." Bobby yells into the phone.
"How did you know about that?" Dean asks already looking over at his brother who looks at him apologetically.
"Don't mind how I know. Look I get it you boys are working but I think it's best if you brought Jules to stay with me for a few days." The older man says.
"Bobby you sure that's a good idea?"
"Yeah, believe me I know you want to keep her close Dean, but she's been mixed up in this alot lately. Just let her stay a few days here and then you can come back for her."
"Alright we'll be there tomorrow." Dean tells him before hanging up.
"What did Bobby say?" Sam questions his brother.
"He said to let Jules say with him a few days. Said she was getting to mixed into all this stuff."
"I know you don't like the idea of being so far away from her Dean, but I think Bobby's right. "
"Yeah, I know" Is all he says before continuing to drive in silence.
By morning they a pulling up to Singer Auto. Bobby and Russell his dog are waiting outside.
Dean pulls up and shuts off the car, they both go greet the older man.
"Hey Bobby." Sam says hugging him.
"Hey son. How ya holding up boy?"
"I'm okay." Sam responds but both men know it's a lie, yet Bobby knows not to push him.
Back at the car Dean is trying to gently wake his daughter. "Hey bug, wake up someone wants to see you."
Slowly the child opens her eyes and as soon as she recognizes her surroundings she is extremely excited. Dean unbuckles her and bring her over.
"Pop pop." The girl shouts.
"Hey there lil darling. I've missed ya." Bobby says taking the girl into his arms.
"Missed you this much pop pop." Jules replies spreading her arms as wide as they can go causing the men to laugh.
"You boys wanna come in for breakfast?"
"Nah. We gotta hit the road." Dean tells him.
"Alright if ya sure."
"Hey bug uncle Sammy and I have to go but your gonna stay with pop pop for a few days okay?" Dean tells his daughter.
"Your leaving?" The child asks sadly.
"Yeah but only for a few days and besides you and pop pop will have so much fun while we're gone."
Juliette hugs both Sam and Dean before going back to Bobby. They wave as the brothers drive away. Once the impala is no longer visible Bobby takes her inside along with her bag.
"So darling what do you wanna do first?"
